Finished this yesterday. Overall I really enjoyed it and quite liked that it's less RPG than the sequel, think I prefer not having all the cyber module stuff to worry about on balance and just being able to use what I want. I do think they could have done with some more QoL when it came to progression, it's a little obtuse as to how you're meant to progress at some points. I think inventory space was a little on the low side as well thanks to the junk mechanics. Some kind of QoL to auto scrap stuff would have helped a bit, but a tiny bit more space by default would have too. I appreciate them seemingly keeping to the layout of the original game's maps, but IMO they could have done with either spacing things out a little more to improve the maps' readability, or provided a floor toggle for each deck as it gets a bit silly when you have areas passing over others. The very end sequence played a bit like a wet fart. But otherwise great. Glad to hear they were faithful to the original, though yeah, it kinda sucks that they didn't bother to fix some of its issues. For what it's worth, inventory space was much more limited (but on the other hand you had a separate inventory for each category such as weapons, consumables, and misc items). The map was hard to decipher at times, though you could at least write notes on it. The devs had obviously progressed from their work on Ultima Underworld. Even if the game is action at heart, these are the RPG trappings it inherited from UU1. How long did it take you? It's actually a pretty long game iirc, even knowing what to do it still easily takes 10 hours... I think my first time was 15+ hours. But from what I could see of the demo, the combat and animations are slower in this remake, so it might end up being even longer. Very much convinced that I'm going to pick it up next month.

Writing notes on the map would have been a huge benefit for me, markers alone isn't enough. Weird they didn't include it.
Took me 23 hours according to Steam, though I did let it idle for a little while.

I'm near(ish) to the end. Given System Shock 2, Thief, Deus Ex are like my Ur games. This feels like a step towards them, rather than a think I'd fight somebody over being the best game ever made.
It's a bit too shootery for my liking. I can see where it all came from though.

At the time it came out it was this mid-place between Ultima Underworld and Doom, like Doom for smart people. Or Underworld for dumb people. I absolutely loved it I thought the second game was great but overrated in comparison. System Shock invented so much.

Ok hands up if you accidentally destroyed Earth on Level 2.. then remembered you'd done the same thing back in 1994.
I'm a bit lost on the Research level. I think I need to find X22, there's a door somewhere that needs a 3 digit code.

Everyone last week: This is the best game ever! Everyone this week: It's a bit hard! I don't know what to do!

Ta Getting X-22 doesn't need a code, but the 3 digit thing you're thinking of is probably the one in the same room as the cyberspace terminal in research.
It's not on a PDA or message though.

Yeah I got that one off the monitor. Hmm I will have another nosey around next time, it's very easy to get lost in this. Could really do with some more heals, credits and ammo. Enjoying it though

Ah ok, I know which code you have now from cyberspace. You'll use that later.
For now though you need to be in the gamma quadrant on research and make sure you have the science access key card with you when you go there

Yass got the X22! Forgot about that biohazard zone cos I had no suit or heals. Just ran in there and made it out with 1 health point. Then died as soon as I got to the reactor level (which I'm guessing is where I go next)

It’s been soooo long since it came out for pc I’d actually given up hope. Fucking LOVE system shock so this is most excellent.

Nice. I kinda missed the boat on the PC version, despite really enjoying the demo. The PC one is 50% off in a bunch of places at the moment so maybe I'll grab that and play along with you console folks.

I really should get the PC version sometime. It just slipped by me.
Should avoid temptation with 50% deals though. My decision to stop buying new games until I actually finished off some of the backlog of games had already suffered yesterday when I bought Balatro and Dark Forces Remastered.

Ah, Dark Forces Remastered being out (!) probably explains why a bunch of places have been doing sales on various Star Wars Collections that include the OG Dark Forces.
I'm not going to pick up SS just yet, as I assume it'll have time to go on sale again before May, if not drop further.

I played this for the first time since June after seeing this thread pop up again. Got the X-22 and activated the safety override :-)
I need to ammo up before going any further though cos I'm down to just the lead pipe with too many big cyborgs about. I've missed the laser rapier somewhere, probably on the maintenance level.
The atmosphere is great, I shat myself at one point when Shodan ambushed me.
Also, I had no idea about the Dark Forces Remaster. Heck yeah I'll take that (once it's down to £15).

I can't for the life of me remember where the laser rapier is. My brain is now mixing up system 1 and 2 so I'd have to load it up again. I might as well wait for the ps5 version and start again. Again.
Dark forces remastered you say? Intriguing

I haven't played System Shock (there might have been a demo that was on a magazine at the time).
Would the first still hold up? I'd be getting it on PS5
