Right I put 40 hours in to Terra Invicta and in the end I'm not sure why. It's kinda fascinating. Like actually having space combat with delta-V and such, or basically X-Com from a zoomed out 4X style of game. But my god some of the basic mechanics are deeply fucking irritating. It kept seeming like it was about to be open up, but nope it's just more micro-managing bullshit. Like every turn you have to go around your control nodes assigning you 5-6 operatives to defend a bunch of them. You've no idea where the enemy are, what they're doing or even their motives. So just some turns arbitrarily you lose control points. So you just play whack-a-mole annoyingly for fucking ages. Then they either get some tech, or alien help, or and they can take your points but you can't get them back after hours of developing them. No security buildings to build, no reply... Not even a useful explanation of how the fucking systems work so you can learn from it and try again, though it's like 15 hours in at that point so fat lot of fucking good it'll do.

Steam Next Fest is coming today and will be including access to the beta of Stormgate, a new RTS from ex-Blizzard people. I chucked some money at the Kickstarter, so have had access since Friday (and after the Steam event ends), but haven't really had much of a chance to play yet. The brief amount I have played though shows this is very, very much more StarCraft. There are some unique mechanics, but it is pretty clear that this is the same people, with even the races very much following the same template (only two races at the moment, but fully expect the unrevealed third race to be space elves). If you like StarCraft though then this is shaping up to be a must play. Still feels a little rough around the edges and I would say it lacks character at the moment, but hopefully that just means a lot of the art is placeholder currently. The brief play I had felt good though. I haven't engaged with it much, but one of the old Starcraft 2 casters/players has been casting a good amount of Stormgate recently. This game here was pretty decent in terms of getting a good introduction, aside from being a fun game to watch.
