Pog makes riding a bike look good, no doubt. It’s a factor in liking a rider for me and why I’m so glad Chris Froome is just about to finally fuck off.

You can see him in his natural habitat on a mountain bike in the latest Israel tourism/IPT promo.

Nasty crash in the first few KM has led to numerous abandons Should be a good one on the penultimate climb and the lead-in to Joux-Plane.

Wout gave it his all. He'll carry on at his own pace from here. ... You'd think.

I loved that. Wout could barely turn the pedals, flew by everyone, destroyed rafa majka's rhythm who then went backwards & then exploded again himself after evening up each team.
WvA is amazing.

Interesting day. Think Pog wasn't fresh at the end, but Ving seemed a little cowed. Maybe WvA should have waited to help like Soler did.

I'm not sure I can tell what form they are in, thinking oh Pogi looks a bit tired but then he pressed the accelerator and just teleported to Yates.

Fucking hell. After seeing the massive crash because a spectator was too busy recording on his phone to pay attention, I'm glad this impressive shot of Pidcock flying past was taken safely.

I’m not quite sure where Pog wins this with the Jumbo train (OK, Wout) marking him so mercilessly. Slightly better time trialist?

Time trial is probably the way, but there are a couple of days in the mountains to come on wed and Saturday i think.
Pog looked tired the last couple of days, but then there will be rest day plus a shirtish TT then a sprint stage, so he'll no doubt be fine for the hillier stuff again!

This is my first time watching the tour from start to end and paying a lot of attention other than a passing bit of attention when a brit is doing well. (Thanks Netflix - you got me hooked)
How are Jonas and Tadej so remarkably strong? Is it always the case in the grand tours you have one or two riders who are leagues ahead? I feel bad for Jai in third as he is gapped by some distance.

They’re the best two GC riders at the moment, any other riders who are who want a stab at GC will target the other to GTs so there’s a bit less competition at this one. This is Hindley’s first Tour also so probably finding his feet a bit at this level, a podium finish would stil be a massive achievement
Roglic, Evanepoel, Thomas, Almeida & Hart are all GC winners absent from the Tour

They also both have probably the strongest teams in the peloton with them who can help them up the hills by doing all the hard work and keeping them out of the wind so they expend less energy.
Depends on the rider, as elstoof says they are the best GC riders just now and are able to do a lot of the things required at that level well, whereas you will get time-trial specialists, or sprinters, or climbers who are very good at certain aspects, but not enough to challenge at the front end of the race.
Or you get folk who are amazing at a lot of stuff like WvA who are employed to ensure Vingegaard does well.
Other good GC riders may focus on the giro or vuelta and avoid the Tour, although, it's obviously the main one of the calendar!

Not all teams are there to challenge for GC either, you’ll have a few sprint teams, some who just want to sit in the breakaway and go for stage wins, just keep the sponsors jersey on the TV coverage

Remco Evanpoel, why isn't he in the tour, he's the Road World Champion, right? I remember watching the race down under where he sealed it. I don't know the others... yet. (edit: actually I do. Doesn't Roglic also ride for Jumbo Visma? Would you field two GC riders in one team or would that complicate things?) That Netflix show has done wonders for me and my now obsession over pro cycling. I can watch any sport and have a good time (apart from Test Cricket) but now I've started getting into the teams and the tactics, I can't get enough. I even enjoy sitting through 4 hours of not much really happening. Wish I got into this sport younger. Both just enjoying riding and watching it on tv. I've missed out.

Not many do the Giro - Tour double, 3 week tours really take it out of you. Dual leader is possible, but it does get a bit messy as to who you are going to support, eventually you have to decide on full support for 1 rider rather than give half assed support to 2, and tbh Roglic is probably going to end up as number 2 if he went, so he decided on the Giro - Vuelta instead. Remco is kind of warming up to GTs, he still needs a parcours with a lot of TT miles to be able to compete for the win, and this tour really isn't it, he's off to the Vuelta as well (which he won last year).

Rumours he’s looking to leave Quickstep for a team that’ll fully do the full majesty of REMCO justice.

Remco rode in the Giro until pulling out with covid, he could’ve ridden the tour potentially but the way these guys train they’ll target a specific time to peak at months in advance. He’ll be at the vuelta though

Ineos/Sky used to take a couple of GC contenders on the squad, it’s rare for a team to have that many legitimate top tier riders though

What's going on in that TT? Just came back from Lunch. Two DSm riders arrived too late. Two DSM riders went down in the first corner. 1 Cofidis rider went down in the first corner.

OK FG brains, fill me in. What am I supposed to be looking out for in an ITT? Is it just a full gas effort nothing more nothing less? Does it suit certain riders/sprinters more than the ones chasing the GC? My friend was telling me that Tadej will be too much for Jonas in a TT event but I no bugge all, probably less than.

Certain riders are better at TTS than others, the ones who’ve done a lot of training to the power meter, those with track experience etc. some great climbers just can’t TT well, some less great climbers has made up their time on TTs to win GC. Big Mig Indurain wasn’t built very well for climbing but he could put out massive power for an hour and make up loads of time on his rivals. Egan Bernal was as good climber as anyone on this tour but he’d lose a lot of time to Pog and Ving if he was fully fit and in the mix, they’re both great TT riders
