In response to MolarArm asking if the first is worth playing as Dark Souls fan.
If you have an Xbox or PC with Gamepass you can give the first one a go for free through that.
I think it is worth giving a go if you like Soulsbourne games, particularly Sekiro. The combat system is very similar to that. Probably unfortunate for them, but it came out a few months after Sekiro and the combat is nowhere near as polished. Ends up suffering in comparison. Still enjoyable though.

It feels smoother at times but there's just no consistency to it. Even with VRR it still feels constantly unstable. 30 might feel a little less smooth but at least its consistent and the motion blur takes away most of the judder you normally get at 30fps.
And it looks way way worse in performance mode. Its sub 720p. Less foliage, shimmer, textures look like shit. If the frame rate was solid it might possibly be worth it, but looking like shit and lurching all over makes performance mode completely broken for me.

I'm honestly not getting any of that.

So, I'm someone for whom Star Wars generally does very little. I don't hate it or anything, I wish it well! But it's not going to be a huge draw for me. So, in that case, is this worth a look? I have heard that the previous one at least was a bit like Dark Souls. I've no idea whether that's accurate or not, but I might give it a go if the combat is good. The combat is sort of soul-ish. It’s feels a lot more dynamic and action-y than a souls game to me though. The most souls-like bit is that fact enemies respawn when you rest at a Jedifire. The rest of the game is a bit like a 3D metroidvania. Every level is a sprawl of areas to discover and some areas you can’t access until certain powers / abilities have been found etc. It’s excellent, but I’d imagine Star Wars fans will get a lot more from it.

I mean the digital foundry people are as well so maybe you're just really strong in the force or something.

From what I've read that seems to be a major consequence of them using FSR 2.0 only rather than all the other better upscalers. Which is really weird.

The one thing I'd give them credit for though is whatever they're using to smooth the 30fps mode out. Feels way better than 30fps is normally. Apparently frame pacing has something to do with it whatever that is.

There is no way the game looked 720p to me in performance mode, no way at all. I know internally the game renders at sub-720p, but then FSR 2.0 and temporal upscaling I assume does a lot of heavy lifting to get it up to a presentable image. However I think that image looks very presentable and quite sharp. Maybe a little shimmer, but nothing distracting.
Perhaps something different is happening between the PS and Xbox versions because I just dont get it. Sub 720p would look blurry as shit, and this doesn't. I have a 55" 4k TV and I don't sit that far from it, so it would be very noticeable.
I should note that I never played past the opening section, so it could of all changed past that opening bit.

As someone who loves Souls, got the platinum for Sekiro and really likes Star Wars I just couldn't get on with it and gave up after around five hours. Combat really didn't do it for me, even on harder difficulties. It feels like you're wielding a glowing baseball bat instead of a lightsaber and it's nowhere near as tight or crisp as a FROM game and I don't understand the Sekiro comparisons at all. Everything (combat, platforming, storyline etc) just felt a little 'loose' and needed more time in the oven - sounds like the sequel corrects most of this. Still, if you've got Gamepass it's definitely worth a go.

I mean the digital foundry people are as well so maybe you're just really strong in the force or something. Frame drops are occuring in both modes, and are generally more solid in perf. Shimmering is much more noticeable in resolution mode. Difference in foliage is present but unless you're toggling back and forth there's nothing to suggest the perf. mode looks "dog shit" once you stop doing the comparision. As mentioned, the patch from Tuesday seems to have cleaned up some stuff, in that it felt much better to just stick with perf. for me. The opening level seems to be a major performance hog but now that I'm running around planets it's alright 90% of the time.

It's a good game, less Soul-ish than even the first one, but I would argue that the Star Wars setting is a huge, huge draw, and the game would certainly do a lot less for me (and get less attention) if it wasn't tied to that franchise. If you want a game with somewhat similar-ish, but much, much better combat, get Ghost of Tsushima, if you haven't already. It's generally a significantly better game.

I'm on Koboh and it looks like shit in performance mode. If you Google it everyone on Reddit is saying the same thing and the the patch had barely done anything. But I really can't be arsed to argue with you about it so I'm glad its working well for you.

I don't have a PlayStation, unfortunately, so Tsushima is out for now. But thanks for the response! And all the other responses! I think I might get Fallen Order and see how I get on with that, if I don't enjoy it at least I won't have wasted much money.

I don't understand the Sekiro comparisons at all. Maybe I was playing it wrong or I'm misremembering, but I spent a lot of time battling stamina bars through blocks and parries, particularly against "sword" wielders, rather than direct damage to health bars. As I say, it was nowhere near as polished and didn't feel as good as Sekiro, but mechanically it was very similar.

Started this last night and had a great time with it. PS5 on quality mode, didn't notice any problems. I'm probably not paying as much attention as some folks, though. Start was great, though. Seems less linear than the first, I've just got to: Where you've opened the Forest Gate after meeting Griz and I'm looking for the Forest Array and I seemed to be lost, wandering aimlessly about... which I don't remember being able to do in the first

It's because the map is fucking awful, it's right up there as one of the worst maps in a franchise ever.

What the fuck is happening with the yellow line leading off nowhere near where I want to go?

• My map has become an almost Ubisoft-esque icon fest after unlocking both a treasure map* and a seeds map.
• Scavenger droids can fuck off.
• On the subject of seeds... Why? What is it leading to? If there was a terrarium on the Mantis in the first game, a rooftop garden in this one, what's going to be in the inevitable third? Terraforming an asteroid?
• The Force Tear you can find on Coruscant genuinely made me go "Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, SHIT..."
• Seen at least two references in the game to The Old Republic, and one to Rebels. Which was nice.
• Holo-Tactics. Why is your opponent represented across the table from you as a hologram as well, when every single one of them is either in the saloon already or just outside it? The last one is actually in the same room as you standing next to their own hologram.
* Most pain in the arse puzzle to unlock it, so far anyway, ended up doing the third part of it more by luck than skill.

The BOTW esque looking through BD's scope and tagging a location never seems to work. I want to tag something off in the distance and usually places the beacon at my feet. Also not really much use for it I find.

Couple hours in and haven’t really had to use the map so far, I just run up to whatever new shiny thing they dangle in front of me.

Love the hare and tortoise comedy of the game. Bode and Greez are in the saloon, minding their own business, having a drink. I rush through the door, run to the Mantis, jump aboard…Greez is already in the pilot seat, Bode seems half asleep on the ship’s sofa. Off to another planet, I jump out of the ship, sprint to Zeno Cordova, but Bode is right there, looking gravely at the strategy map.

You wouldn't love it if you got on the ship and then had to wait in real time while they pootle over to the ship

Why the feck is this so puzzle and platform heavy, was the first as bad, I don't remember it being so. Not feeling this at the mo. A bit like Doom eternal when they ruined it by putting all the wank platforming in. Also the map can fuck off.

Platforming, yeah. It's a metroid-vania, like the first. I wouldn't say it's particularly puzzle heavy - there are only a handful of puzzle rooms and I think they're all optional past the first. You are gated by tools though, so you need to "figure out" the path ahead, but there's only really one way to go.

I thought the first had more puzzles but this one has more platforming.
I'm not a huge way into the game yet though as I would rather play it when it works.
