Probably not NWH, but it’ll lean on WandaVision and What If for sure. I suspect it’ll be fine standalone though.

Ah right, Wanda. Well, her wrongdoings from WandaVision can be summarized in a minute or to before the movie starts.

What If seems like it might be the most important one, give who the trailers have indicated appears.

I don't think it's going to impair your enjoyment if you don't watch that. There's always going to be something for the person who just wants to be entertained and the person who's watched everything.

What If seems like it might be the most important one, give who the trailers have indicated appears. You mean the What If episode where Strange tries again and again to save his girlfriend and destroys the universe? I might be remembering it differently, but that Strange looked different than smug smiling evil Strange from the MoM trailers

It would be surprising if the Strange in the trailer isn’t the What If variant. Merch leaks give his name as Strange Supreme, which is what the What If variant was also called.

I was under the impression the MoM is pretty much carrying on from the events of NWH (as well as likely having nods to the What If episode, WandaVision and I would guess possibly some bits of Loki). I think the trailer even references the spell he cast in NWH.
Not that that means it will be essential viewing to have a clue what is happening, of course. Marvel films normally work perfectly fine if taken as a stand-alone.

I think it's a different spell than the one from NWH that creates the multiverse problems in MoM. At the end of NWH everything is fixed and fine again, I guess they would have foreshadowed any lingering effects

I’m sure there’ll be references to NWH in it especially as Tobey Maguire is rumored to show up in the Illuminati council scene but they’ve got about twenty different tie ins to multiverses going on right now, so either way it’ll probably be a pretty generic “somehow, the multiverse returned” kind of thing.

You have to wonder whether the MCU acknowledges that Vulture was randomly shunted into Sony’s universe in a manner that doesn’t fit with what NWH prescribed. The DS2 inciting incident may well be the spell causing a bigger fracture in the multiverse than Strange previously suggested.
I also think it would be… odd… though, for the movie (even a Marvel movie) to not be self-contained enough to have its own inciting incident. Maybe someone else (whoever the movie’s villain is) has a plan that involves the multiverse (eg, Dormammu seeking revenge) and essentially framing Strange, making it look like whatever is going on in Act One (presumably, reality caving in on itself) should be blamed on Strange’s No away Home shenanigans.

I think it's unlikely that they're going to entirely let Strange off the Hook like that. It seems more likely to me that your first theory is also true - i.e. Strange fucked up bigger than he had thought, and/or attracted unwanted attention, and then the bad guys take advantage of the damage done.

Christ, I was wondering if they were going to ever acknowledge the existence of this film. Looking forward to it

Nice glimpse of Mighty Thor at the end there. Wondered if they were going to try to keep it out of the trailers, despite it being leaked (and confirmed) a billion times over.

Looks like this has been stuck in development hell (or whatever he appropriate term is), so I'm highly sceptical. But fingers crossed.

It was shuffled around due to Covid but I’m not sure I’d call that development hell.

That's what I was assuming, Covid fucked over so many releases.

Love and Thunder stuck fairly close to the schedule, I thought. It's more Guardians 3 that had production issues.

I guess Taika was doing that pirate show, maybe a couple of other things.

Yeah, as Grem said I believe it was more due to COVID which resulted in a lot of shuffling, Dr Strange 2 for example got a huge delay.

I think this explains why we’ve had some below par special effects in a few big movies recently, evryone was working on Thor

Looks fantastic, and Chris Hemsworth is so much a better Thor than the comics have, ever, ever had (comics Thor is a lot of fun, but never this much fun). Anyway really looking forward to this.
