I didn't expect anyone to bother trying to hide it after my initial post, it's Robert Downey Jr, he's playing Doom.

He’s actually playing Victor Von Doom, according to the stage reveal, so it’s not just a Stark variant. He is the bad guy, so I don’t see any late stage good-guy turn. The bigger question is whether they off him after 2 movies, like they do with everyone, most surprisingly Kang the Conquerer, and that Doom done with.
They’re saying Doom is a big deal, and he should be, but I’m not sure RDJ is signing on for another 10 movies.

So now my thoughts are that he's in Secret Wars, is RDJ also appearing as Iron Man in that movie? Still not sure about this but I guess he came back for a reason other than money.

He could play an evil sort of Samuel L Jackson bit part role in some other films but I suspect it will only be a couple.

I don’t think he’ll be Stark anymore.

At the very least I'm looking forward to seeing the design of Doom.
I also find it hilarious that they literally went with a Poochie and Kang is just...gone. I mean not that the general audience give a shit or would even notice in any meaningful way.

If they do attempt an Infamous Iron-Man with RDJ as VVD assuming the mantle, THAT would be the laziest thing they could do with the character being played by the original Iron-Man actor. If that is the angle they run with, having someone else play the role would be a much better direction.
It’s interesting that, so far, I’ve only seen a lot of “lazy” and “desperate” responses to the news. I don’t think it’s landed with the full force of expectation that Marvel were hoping.

I was thinking more Superior IronMan.
Agree that it's a weird play. You have a wealth of casting options and my mind initially thought Stark variant Superior Iron Man. They haven't come out and said he's in FF so it's a possibility then I assume they'll go to Battleworld with him as God Emperor Doom.

That entire paragraph makes zero sense to someone who doesn't read comics ;-)

I've been mulling the idea over. Still think it's a lazy idea. I was looking forward to Doom too, but I wanted an actual Doom, not some tired multiverse version.
Just a bit fed up of the multiverse angle. The quicker we can collide it together and just move on the better.

Him being in the role is likely to be a better performance than just about anyone else so that’ll all be ignored when it comes out. Who knows, maybe there’sa good reason for it to be played by him and isn’t just fan service somehow.
I’m still disappointed they didn’t stay with Krasinski for FF and a few other good characters have just been forgotten about completely. If they get back to fairly decent stories and action then it’ll be a lot better than they’ve done recently.

I'm not convinced it'll lead to a better performance than anyone else. Downey Jr. can be a great actor, but he's also done some dross. His Stark was fantastic, but will Doom be both a) distinct enough (if he's too similar to Stark it'll be crap) and b) not one of his shit performances. If his perfomance is anything less than actually exceptional it's just stunt casting.
I'd be incredibly shocked if the primary motive for this casting is anything other than fan service.
Maybe I'll be proved wrong but my waning interest in the MCU has waned further with that reveal - I'll probably still watch it once it's streaming but I can't imagine myself going out of my way to see this in a theatre.

I don't really want an antihero Doom.
He's a character that would be "fun' to play as opposed to the one dimensional Marvel characters.
There's plenty of actors that could do a great job, this feels like an unnecessary stunt.

I don't really have the same problems most of you guys have with this casting.
Is Downey a great actor who could deliver a fantastic performance as Doom? Yes.
Could another actor, one who wasn't so closely tied to an existing MCU role, have also done a fantastic job? Yes.
Is there some reason why they wanted Doom to look like Tony Stark? I dunno, maybe? For all we know the role could be entirely voice-over and he's putting on an Eastern European accent so there's basically no connection.
My main issue with it, really, is that I don't see how it's permanent. I think he's going to crop up, maybe in the post-credit scene, of Fantastic Four, and then be the antagonist of the two Avengers movies, and then that's it; they're either going to recast or just kill off Doom altogether. And that's a shame, because I wanted him to stick around, just be this dick in Latveria who maybe pops up on news feeds in random movies slagging off the Wakandans or something.

You final point is very much also a concern. We need an actual ongoing presence who isn't just killed off in a single film or two.
Also you generally won't hire someone like Downey Jr. and not show their face, so it's unlikely Doom will stay masked.

I suspect that’s probably the get out of jail card, if this is real. He will take the origin story until he has to go behind the mask and then you can cast anyone.

I think, to a certain extent, the reverse will be true; this will the Doom from the FF's universe, who will end up stuck on our Earth at the end of their film, leading to the events of Doomsday. And he'll look like the comic book Doom, mask and all.
But then whatever happens to lead to Secret Wars, he'll get (essentially) Beyonder powers, "heal" his "scarred" face, and then take his mask off. So Downey will be a maskless Doom for his second proper appearance.
I mean, maybe he's played by Downey because when he comes to our Earth he essentially picks the face of someone everyone will trust, I dunno. Maybe there's actually some thought to it.

If he's going to be masked until a dramatic reveal at a later point, it would be a lot more effective if they had kept it secret until that point. Could actually be genuinely shocking.
It's highly unlikely that they would be able to keep that under wraps though, have to admit.

Yeah, it doesn't really matter if there's "thought behind it", it's lame and we know it's happening because they've shit the bed elsewhere with the films. I'm sure there will be a reason in the movie, the Avengers will see him and be shocked!, and he'll likely be good in the role. None of that changes the criticism of it.

If Doom was played by, essentially, a masked stuntman with RDJ doing the voiceover, it would be quite amusing to see in a film also starring Pedro Pascal.

Finally got to see Deadpool, so I can enter this thread with safety. I thought it was very funny but honestly if you haven’t been watching comic adaptations of films for the last 2024 years then many of the jokes will go over your head. Like I’m not sure how I could explain them to my kids who’ve only watched the mcu (should I let them watch it).
Hilariously when I booked the tickets there was a big red notice on the Vue website saying “THIS IS A 15 AND WE WILL BE DOING ID CHECKS”. Then I received a follow up email (after the booking confirmation) also saying “NO REALLY THIS IS A 15” hahaha.
It was a good film though and if you have been watching this shit for 24 years then yeah it’s a lot of fun.

About RDJ; this is a surprise but coming from a business standpoint you can see why Marvel have done it. They went all in on Majors, so now they need a known quantity.
I do wonder if they had kept it a secret what a great twist it would be; but then there would be so much fan speculation that undoubtedly it would have been figured out beforehand anyway so..
My conspiracy theory is that RDJ was always due to come back in “Kang Dynasty” - as a multiversal Iron Man who gets killed - so he was already signed up.
But regardless, I am sure it will be better than “somehow RDJ has returned” but by all means quote me in 2 years when I’m wrong and it’s all terrible.
