$152 million opening weekend is a failure? Fuck, time to bust out the old VHS camcorder. I want to fail my way into $152,000,000. It is when you've sunk around 300mil unless it a has a big tail like Top Gun then it's just lower numbers again and again. Slightly funny to see it’s made more than Shazam 2 made in its whole run already.

I saw Shazam 2 last month, well, when I say "saw" I could only manage about 45mins it was that bad. The first one was some good fun this was not the one.

Secret Invasion ep 3 was a bit of a step up. Some properly tense bits and a lot of very fun Fury/Talos banter.
Wouldn't say it's essential yet but I've really gotten into it.

I know we often say these shows feel like movies that have been extended but I think Secret Invasion goes the other way and feels like a network tv show thats had its production values upped.
Olivia Coleman is probably the best thing about it though. She obviously had so much fun being a bastard.

The only thing I can remember from episode 3 was the pub breakfast.
Still waiting on the Fury montage. Any time now.

So much of the Secret Invasion plot makes little sense Skrulls maybe able to withstand radiation but if they kicked off a nuclear war the radiation is the least worrying part when the big explosions atomise you and the atmosphere is completely trashed. Also why the fuck would you use a sub to take down a plane? What's it going to fire at them? UK subs have obviously Trident for the boomers but the Astute class has torpedoes and Tomahawks, nothing that can hit a plane. They should have used a Type 45 destroyer, its main purpose is anti-air warfare.

Im probably spending too much time on the internet but it dawned on me during this weeks episode that we are just watching The Great Replacement Theory: The Mini Series.
Immigrants coming over here, taking our jobs, wanting to impose their own culture on us? Some of them claiming the locals will like them because they try to fit in and are being 'the good ones'? Its a disk grace.
So not only is it shit, its based on a racist conspiracy theory.

It even had Nick Fury giving it the old Brexit “there’s no more room!” moan on the train.

The one bit of credit I'm willing to give the show is that this is deliberate and is something that will be addressed, especially considering it's produced and directed by people of colour.
Might be optimistic of me but still.

Lol.
But at this point all multiverse-style cameos have become so commonplace that they really make no impact anymore. Doubly so now that they can de-age people and CG the faces of dead actors.
Oh, Marlon Brando shows up playing the version of Elektra from the 90s cartoons, in an MCU movie by a different studio??!! OMG! meh. seen it.
What are the odds that this means the Netfix Electra shows up, which means Netflix Daredevil shows up, but with a cameo from Ben Affleck Daredevil, and everyone is so amazed?!

So, are these movies still popular? I know the popular consensus is that they are less good, but are they still making boatloads of money? It feels harder to tell now with streaming platforms.

The current rumors suggest Deadpool 3 is basically going to be Fox Marvel vs Disney Marvel, and practically everyone from every Fox movie is cameoing.

I'd say there's been a small downtick in both reviews and box office. I'm a huge MCU geek so I don't really feel like they've fallen off a cliff or anything, but you only need to look at almost every blockbuster released this year to see that these huge films aren't making the money they did four years ago. Guardians 3 looks like it's gonna bow out with about $30m less than Guardians 2, but given the climate I think companies like Marvel need to re-evaluate what they think of as a hit. A film that made $1b in 2019 is, weirdly enough, equivalent to a film making $750m nowadays.

Maybe they could just spend less money on them. There's a reason horror is consistently one of the most profitable genres - cheap and reliable.
If it "only" makes $50 million, it probably cost $10 million.

Maybe don't use so much green screen? No. Use the green screen but just don't project anything on it. Allow the power of the performance to transport you, not flashy graphics.

They used to be the watchword for basic competence so you could just YOLO a tenner on something you’d never heard of but not anymore 2) there are no new ideas under the sun and everything moves in cycles and the superhero cycle is on the way down. You can’t hold people’s attention forever, even if the movies were still actually good.

Eternals is the only one I would rate below that mark (even that is probably a 5/10 - just). I think your second point is more relevant. People are just fatigued by the superhero genre, as well as Marvel not replacing the infinity saga overarching storyline with anything of interest.

Yeah, if the Infinity Saga had properly transitioned into a Kang/Multiverse saga I think it would have been fine. But they’ve spent a couple of years just doing sequels with little attachments and no interesting hooks, and they’ve bungled the storytelling all over. Ant Man 3 is crap, and that’s the set-up for the next thing.

I think the "superhero fatigue" idea is a bit overplayed, it's people are just bored of the "same fucking thing over and over again fatigue", Across the Spider-Verse is still getting a lot of bums on seats because it's something different. On the DC side of things The Batman did very well too.
It's bizarre that Marvel even acknowledged the format had got stale in She-Hulk and then has done precisely nothing to change things, that show didn't exist in a vacuum, the real K.E.V.I.N. didn't get surprised by it so Marvel Studios have had plenty of time to change things up but haven't. We've also got the Disney+ shows that were supposed to do some different stuff but they seem to be heading in the same direction.
There's only so many third act big battles like some kids playing with action figures people are prepared to stomach before they think "I've seen this film/show" before.

I agree with this, but I don't think it's superhero movies in particular, I think it's all kinds of big budget event movies. The Marvel ones still do quite well in comparison because I think they still have a built in audience and a general level of quality. But yeah, the expectation of $750m-$1b gross for every tentpole film definitely has to go, and so budgets should probably come down too. The problem being that VFX artists are already notoriously overworked and underpaid and any budget cuts are likely to fall on their heads ...
