The problem with the latest phase surely has been that Covid hit so many productions within the period. We would probably be about 4 films on as well as tv shows by now.
From phase 2 onwards we were getting around 3 movies a year, since Covid, essentially right after Endgame, the production line stalled and so it's felt disjointed.
Still, I don't think we have had a truly bad film or series from them since Endgame, Eternals is borderline but was entertaining enough.
It's throw away popcorn stuff mostly anyway but it will be interesting how they pull the threads together to make something that can match or top the infinity was/endgame culmination of the first lot of films.

I found Black Widow a complete disappointment, not only because it should have happened before the character died but because it just wasn't a story that was really worth telling and Ray Winstone should never play Russian again.

Eternals bored the shit out of me and Black Widow was very disappointing.

Still not seen Black Widow, but it's a shame it doesn't sound great because I liked the character and there were hints at some cool black widow stuff in Agent Carter. Why they didn't do it 2 phases ago is beyond me though.
It's true that Covid played a big factor in me not watching many MCU movies since endgame though, and messing with the flow.

Black Widow has some character scenes I liked a great deal, it’s mainly brought down by a poor script, some really dumb moments, ideas that feel recycled from other MCU movies, bad CGI, and worse than all of that, ludicrously consequence-less violence / injury against apparently rubber super-women. Women falling out of buildings, out of the sky, in massive car crashes, even beating their own faces in, but never a scratch or blemish or inconvenient limp comes of it. Die Hard this ain’t. Captain America visibly took more damage in that Skybarge Falling About finale fight in Cap 2.
I haven’t watched it a second time yet, and most poor MCU movies I find better on a second viewing. But I haven’t groaned so much during any other MCU movie.

I really dislike the whole interconnected plot/cinematic universe - I don't want to watch average to poor movies just to stay up to date on what the overarching story is. Give me standalone, quality films any day of the week. I think the DCEU is what you want. They keep throwing out lots of standalone stories cos they seem like they can stitch fuck all together. I kid, I kid 😂

I’m interested in this. The number of billion-dollar characters that came out of this one guy is pretty stunning, he’s like the William Shakespeare of the 20th century. Which is a damning indictment on the 20th century I guess, if we needed another one.

Or not if you ask Kirby and Ditko

I've always wondered about the amount of hype Lee gets/got compared to the other people who worked on a lot of those comics. But I don't know enough about the topic to know if it's justified.

He obviously has a powerful and influential legacy, arguably rightly so (he practically single handedly destroyed the comics code censorship that had held comics back from telling more mature stories), but in the last decade or so there has been a massive shift in almost willfully ignoring the more controversial sides of him, the vulture like grabbing of property, the various lawsuits, the bankruptcies, anything with his direct and sole creative control generally tanking, etc.

I mean, sure, you could argue that, for a guy who was involved to varying degrees with the creation of hundreds of characters and the reinvention of a bunch of existing properties (like Namor and Captain America) the guy had a mere 60-70 characters that continue to churn billions of dollars, not even 20% of his characters. What a fuckin’ loser.

Without him there’d basically be no Silver Age-onwards for Marvel as we know it. He might not have been the sole brain behind most of the characters he’s credited with but you look at the relative lack of success the characters even a genius lack Jack Kirby created had without him and you see why he’s so important.
I’m guessing the Disney doc will be fairly sanitised but at the same time he probably deserves the title of being the father of the modern superhero genre.

Maybe Disney could do a look at their lovely, not-racist creator?
Sanitised puff piece "documentaries" are the worst.

I wasn't really implying that he was a bad guy or didn't deserve it, more that he seems to be the *only* guy who gets that kind of recognition, and I wondered if other people like Kirby and others I've probably never heard of deserved similar levels of credit/recognition.

Kirby definitely deserves a bigger pop culture reputation considering his CV is basically the entire MCU + DC’s biggest baddie
Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Ant Man, Black Panther, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Nick Fury, Eternals, Inhumans and all of their best enemies; Red Skull, Magneto, The Sentinals, Silver Surfer, Doctor Doom, Galactus, Loki, Kang etc
Jonathan Ross did a really good Steve Ditko documentary for BBC4 thats worth a watch if you’ve got an hour

Jack Kirby’s nickname was “The King” for his very recognised contribution to the whole medium. Stan Lee is only more recognised now because 1. Stan Lee was the very public face of Marvel Comics for sixty years and 2. Kirby died in 1994, leaving him to be a legend only among actual comics fans, while Lee went on to make scores of appearances in movies and wherever else for an extra quarter century. I don’t think Kirby was ever the showman and promoter that Lee was, which also contributed. I mean, I was into comics from the late 80s until the early 2000s and was surprised to only recently learn Kirby lived until 1994; I always thought he’d died in the ‘70s or early ‘80s.

What the actual fuck, I was picturing something like a little four-wheeler / ride-on mower and the article claims it’s a 6.5ton monster truck AND IT ROLLED OVER HIM.
No way Matt Damon would have survived that.
