I think Cameron is great. I just have zero motivation to watch Avatar 2. (and I wish he was making other movies instead of being tied down to this franchise)

I’ve not seen it yet. I think one of the cinemas near me is showing it in 3D but Ant-Man has taken over IMAX.

I think it’s fine but the fact that it has had literally no opposition has helped it’s Bumper Haul.

I think it's actually just that it's very popular. Seems odd to caveat it's success when the franchise now holds the 1st and 3rd highest grossing records in the history of all movies.

Seems weird to me that people are so obsessed with how much money it's making. Like the first one it seems to have had almost zero cultural impact. I've seen zero memes, clips, annoying Facebook 'suggested for you' pages from it since it was released.

There's loads of good films that don't get memed to death, though. I've never fully bought that argument that that's a necessary condition for a film.

Perhaps, but it IS very weird that the first film, being one of the highest grossing films ever, had no lasting cultural impact, especially in geek culture. It's super odd.

Yeah it's a bit weird.
Undeniably they are successful, and that's great! But for something that successful, it's had surprisingly little long-term impact on the culture. James Cameron has made plenty of movies that have made their mark for decades - the Terminators, True Lies, Titanic, etc - so it's not like he doesn't know how to do it.
But Avatar? Massive success, people loved it, then nobody really talked about it for a decade or more. And now a sequel comes out, and it's... even more successful! Which is fine, but a bit weird for a franchise that's been dormant since 2009.

I too find it a strange one. While pretty entertaining movies, I find them completely forgettable. I can barely even remember the names of any of the characters. And is 3D a fad or no? It's been helmed by two of the highest grossing films ever, yet it's been pretty dead since Avatar 1. Or has it just been used really poorly in everything else?

I wonder if they'd franchised it straight away, maybe it'd have had a bigger impact among online geek circles and social media. Franchises keep things in the public consciousness and allow people to get attached to characters, speculate about what's going to happen next, etc...

I think this is an element of it, and there has been some attempt at making it a cross platform entity, but in quite bizarre directions. There was the cirque de soleil show a few years back (set a thousand years in the past for some reason) and the Pandora attraction at Disney World. I suspect Cameron has so much control over the rights to it that he's very selective over what gets made.

I am surprised it's made so much, I feel like every rando everywhere had seen Avatar but I don't recall this one coming up in conversation with anyone at any point. Obviously anecdotal but IDK, usually there's some kind of visible buzz when films make this much money.

But I started to think that was just because of being in a bit of a bubble working from home.

Sooo not long now until we get a chance to play with blue people.
Looking forward to it. Hoping it’s more than Blue FarCry…
Smurfs you can take a breather for now.

Big fan of the Division games and sci-fi Far Cry could be quite cool, so am tempted by this.

In years gone by I would have been tempted. But these days it's easier for me to nope out of things that I know I'll get bored with. And I'm pretty bored with this formula, even if it looks real purty.

Was surprised watching one of the trailers that it looked more interesting than I was expecting. Avatar films are passably average and I'm sure the game will just be Far Cry on an alien planet, but I could see it being worth half price in a sale in a year or two.

Yes, "need". The context is "to play it on". It is impossible to play the game without a tv or tv-like device.

Piddly phone screen might not be the best compromise to playing on his 150" TV.
