Box office went up 7% in it's third weekend.
Edit: Fuck you new page!

And I still know no-one who has watched it or who is interested in watching it. Maybe it's because of xmas new year hols or working from home, but I don't think anyone outside of this thread has even mentioned it.

But on the other hand the IMAX near my mom's place is absolutely rammed since I've been here.

Before and during Xmas I asked everyone I met if they were planning on seeing Avatar 2 The Way of the Water, and pretty much everyone said yes. I was doing it as a weird jokey icebreaker because I’m weird and was surprised most people were at least interested in it.

I went to see it yesterday and it was pretty full. There is also absolutely fuck all else showing if you just wanted to get out of the house and go to the flicks, so it is pretty much either this or nothing.
And, yeah, it was alright. You can see why why they needed three hours for 30 minutes of plot, though. It’s just 50 minutes of ‘isn’t this beautiful, idyllic and lovely?’ followed by 10 minutes of humans smashing it with a hammer over and over.

Plus the utterance of bro and cuz every other second. That must have counted towards 30 minutes of the run time.

Saw it on the 29th with 3 others and all of us liked it. There are criticisms but overall it’s an enjoyable spectacle and I’d watch it again.

Caved and saw it yesterday. Much like the first, it was fine. Nothing very interesting about plot or characters, but it looks pretty and Cameron knows how to direct an action sequence.
It really is far too long though, with a lot of time taken up by the final act. When it was clearly about to reach the big confrontation, I was baffled as to how time had either flown by very quickly or they were going to have more after it. Actually, they just spent 40-50 minutes on the final act.
I still can't fathom as to why this franchise makes so much money, but it is at least passable way to stare at a cinema screen for a while. At least it is a new IP rather than digging up something that has been exhumed countless times already.

I just really like the world building and lore. I could have quite happily sat and watched it if they had cut all the humans out and framed it as a nature documentary. They have a ‘Pandora’ themed land in Disney Animal Kingdom which was probably the most rammed bit of the park and the merch was shifting like crazy. It’s amazingly well themed, the rides are cool and they put a Santa hat on Colonel Butch’s mech suit.

As others said - there is absolutely nothing else on. Cameron has a clear run at the box office. If he'd released this against Endgame or even the last Spiderman, it wouldn't be doing half as well.

It’s an interesting one. Similar criticisms have been levelled at Ridley Scott’s two recent Alien movies that it’s a fantastic director directing a poor/sleight story but the avatar movies are genuinely well loved. And here is the woman one in a glass box /stealth ‘this is now my holiday slideshow’ post

It's certainly doing better than I expected. Even if the movie has no competition right now, you'd think people still wouldn't bother watching it if word of mouth weren't good. Either people are absolutely obsessed with cinemas even after the diffusion of streaming subs, or Cameron must have done something right. Maybe the special fxs are more of a draw than I thought?
Still doubt it can reach the first movie (even before its reruns), but 2 billions seems a lot easier now. It just needs to hold up another two or three weekends. And given that nothing else is scheduled... yeah, that shouldn't be hard.

You know how we used to all jokingly ask Beasty "what's it tracking at?"? We've become everything we once mocked.

Broken 1.4b now. Pretty sure we’ll be getting all 5 movies, and that the internet will proclaim they’re all naff and no-one’s interested in watching them.

It's not 'no-one's watching them' it's more 'who actually cares?' We all know that people will watch any old shite, they've made 6 Transformers films FFS.
I've not seen the new one, but the first one is overlong, rote and leans on some impressive, but empty, FX gimmicks. It's not terrible, but 5/10 would be a generous score.
