Both the Switch and PS4 versions are 1080p and 30fps, so if Switch is your preferred platform, there's no reason not to get that version. The problems with poor audio quality and DVD-level FMV clips applies to both versions as well. So, it's fine. It looks nice handheld, and it's sharp on the TV.
edit: new page. Referring to SMT3. SMT5 is Switch exclusive.

The profanity filter for the player name is a bit extreme... Can't even use Minge as a name now

Just beat the first roadblock boss in V, hard mode with no demons killed. Buzzing.
Got pretty lucky as the boss missed a couple of his big attacks at critical moments, but a win's a win and I'll take that 😎

Ugh, SMT V Europe is a different SKU from the US so I will have to use my wife's UK account for DLC including the Japanese voices... It is nicer when games are like Fire Emblem so I can use US DLC on a UK game.
Disappointing that the Japanese voices are DLC though and not on cart.
Downloading them then time to give it a start.

I'm playing with English voices, the VA is pretty good TBH. It annoys me that I can't turn the subtitles off for cutscenes though, as I find myself reading ahead even though the voices are in English

Oy, that's a big pet peeve of mine. I can't watch a film with people that turn on subtitles to a language we speak. It's distracting.

Yeah it's annoying. That's my biggest complaint with the game though, everything else is stellar.

I went with Japanese VO just because it's what I always do unless I find I'm missing out on battle dialogue etc. Started without enabling it by mistake and the dialogue in the school made me start a fresh game.
Seems decent so far anyway. Took my time working along the road to the first zone that you need to clear, then got fucked up a couple of metres away from the next save point, so had to replay that bit and just ran straight to the save point this time around.
Quite funny that the first non-freebie demon that you'll probably capture is one that you don't want to use, ever... Those weaknesses have properly fucked up some fights for me and I'm only in the tutorial phase.

Heh, Slimes are the bane of early game. I'm sure they're just there to teach new players about the Press Turn system the hard way.
"Why is the enemy getting so many extra turns?" xD
After beating the first proper boss the game has really opened up. It's quite linear up to that point but now I've got 3 or 4 different directions to go in. The map is fantastic

Had a few hours play now, handheld on an OLED Switch and it looks pretty nice. Decided to play on normal for a first run though. Even managed to get myself killed in an early random encounter somehow but making a little progress now. No bosses yet though.

Anybody managed to recruit the rare spawn that looks like a rotated comma? Doesn't want to listen to me, blocks any attacks and just runs away as soon as it has a go. I never have the guaranteed crit move ready whenever I see one.
Kind of wish that this wasn't an exclusive... It's playable and I'm slowly getting used to it, but it could definitely do with a resolution bump and 60fps... Kind of looking forward to bringing my Switch with me next time I need to go to the office mind you.

I never have the guaranteed crit move ready whenever I see one. The Mitamas give you a lot of EXP/Macca/rare items when you kill them. They have one weakness that changes every time you meet one (use a Spyglass) then just hit them with whatever they're weak to, one hit is usually enough

I think I've had enough of the bad performance, ordered a jig thing so I can dump all the stuff off my Switch onto my PC and emulate it. Since I'm not pirating anything it looks relatively simple and low risk as you aren't touching the system memory.
It's the menus and camera that feel the worst for me. SMT4 and Final were super snappy on 3DS but this has lots of little pauses everywhere; hopefully I can brute force my way through it.

I have noticed the menus feel slightly off but in handheld it hasn't felt too bad overall for me. It is odd how so many games have worse performance issues in simple stuff like menus though. And yeah, SMT4 was nice and smooth. Not tried 3 on Switch yet to compare.

I think the issue is that menus are dependent on everything else. You do get games where they decouple the interface from the graphics - the PS1 Final Fantasy games would be borderline intolerable if they didn't - but from what I've read this doesn't. Also the dynamic resolution scaling doesn't kick in until the framerate goes below 25 so they aren't that concerned about performance unfortunately.
I remember 3 on PS5 at least being just fine. Auto battle in particular had a very nice tempo to it, no pauses while damage resolves. Combined with the exclelent sound effects you were just slamming the enemy until your turn ended!

About 14 hours in, it's slow progress. Even with the emulator helping things out a lot in terms of responsiveness there are a lot of little animations and transitions baked into the game which hammer the tempo - not good for a combat-heavy game. The lack of a text log is borderline unforgivable on a game which lets you skip a line with the analogue stick ( !!!!) and often just starts dialogue as you approach something. I'm hoping they patch this because it's some bizarre decision making.

I haven't got far yet but hadn't noticed the analogue thing with the text, it does indeed sound like a stupid design choice though.

I'm 45 hours in and absolutely loving it (got a week off work) Honestly I'm not seeing any of the issues you keep posting about, it's my GOTY for sure.
I sometimes notice a tiny bit of stutter when opening the menu, but with gameplay this good I really don't give a shit about minor technical issues. You make it sound like they're completely gamebreaking and it's just not the case.
Currently stuck on the second major boss. Thought I'd finished it after killing it's second stage, only for the game to say "haha, welcome to stage 3, what do you mean most of your demons are dead and you have no MP left. Fuck you"
Doesn't help that I'm 3 levels lower than the boss, time to do some of the sidequests I've not done yet and get some stronger demons.

suicida Wait, you are only on the second major boss (though admittedly I don't know how many major bosses there are) after 45 hours? Talk about long modern JRPGs. After 45 hours in Nocturne, I was pretty close to entering the final dungeon.

Took me 6 hours on the game clock to get past the first boss, but you can probably add another hour or two to that for reloads. Think I'll be doing a LOT of grinding before I consider taking on the next one!

malek86 I guess you could describe it as the big story boss at the end of the second map area? It's probably the 15th boss I've fought if you include sidequests and sub-bosses etc I'm really taking my time with it, exploring every inch of the map before moving on etc. Been spending a fair bit of time experimenting with demon fusions, and also lots of retries due to hard mode deaths

In about 5 hours in. I didn't even know you can have Japanese audio. Is this option on the switch version?

Still a bit miffed the Japanese voices weren't on the cart but I suppose at least we got offered them this time.

Size of the game + Japanese voices would have been over 16GB, they probably wanted to keep the cart price under check.
Even though it looks like that didn't stop them from making the game more expensive in Japan for literally zero reason...

I figured that would be the reason, still disappointing though (and I hadn't actually checked the filesizes). At least they aren't like Squenix us d to be with charging for Japanese voices or making it permanently exclusive to a day 1 edition that actually sold out by day 1 and not even having a paid option later (World of Final Fantasy on PS4). I could well get the demon DLC at some point anyway so I will live.

I bought all the DLC but not seen much of it yet, apart from beating Matador. It's mainly high level endgame bosses. The increased Mitama spawn rates I turned off, will use that more in a second playthrough to power level demons etc.
