So I didn't get to the end of the remaster of 3. I know there is a link between the two, but presumably I'm cool jumping straight into this one?

Yeah, you'll be fine.

You're fine, there's no story link between the two games. They're thematically very similar but no story progression from III to V

Mine is on the way but no days off work sadly. Also still got the huge box coming home to wife factor to deal with too...

Shopto in their infinite wisdom decided to post a preorder game by second class post, so predictably didn't turn up today. I'm away for a week first thing tomorrow so fuck em, I've downloaded off the eShop, got £5 credit to use so no matter (I prefer digital anyway these days as can't be arsed with the clutter).
Done the first hour and very good so far.

It unlocked on Wednesday afternoon for me (Japanese release) and I'm honestly finding it a bit hard to play with the framerate. It's better in handheld but it's really quite rough on a TV. I've been considering hacking my Switch so I can just take the files off it and run the game on an emulator. Is that just because it's locked at 30fps or are there drops?
I heard there were issues with Metroid Dread but didn't experience any problems at all. Maybe I've got a Super Switch

Is yours an original or the 2019 Mariko refresh

I can't discuss matters of temporal irregularities
Oh I read your post as 2029
It's pretty new but not the white one

Might test my OG switch with Metroid against the oled one to see if it performs better on 16nm

It's pretty much never at 30fps. Even the blank screen at the start with just the text box at the bottom skips and stutters. Metroid spent a fair percentage at 60 and only really consistently suffered when you were using the scan gadget a lot.

Metroid was pretty bad for me, but it seemed to only happen when it was background streaming new data in, which was mainly just running from room to room. It was pretty jarring but never happened in combat that I noticed.
I'm going to have an awful time with this presumably...

Ehh, I'm playing handheld mode and not had any issues so far. I've never really been that sensitive to frame rate drops, people said the Nocturne remaster has the same issues and it was perfectly fine for me. YMMV of course.
A couple of hours in and loving it. Was feeling brave so started on hard mode, and was then promptly reminded that this is an SMT game and got the MC killed by a slime in the second battle. Back to the title screen I go. We'll see how far I get before I get tempted to drop down to normal difficulty but making steady progress.
The demon handbook from the special edition is a lovely thing with some really great art

Wasn't used to JRPGs being that tough and it seemed almost impossible
Seriously thinking about picking this up (part of me just wants to see all the different demon designs with modern graphics as I haven't played P5). The performance issues are a bit of a concern though

I'd imagine performance issues don't matter all that much in a JRPG? Unless you are playing something like Tales.

Honestly, it's fine. Certainly not bad enough to not play it.
Speaking of Matador, I bought the Demi-Fiend DLC and I just got one shot by the skull faced jerk. Guess I'm coming back to him later as I'm only level 6 at the moment and one hit did over 3x my max HP.

What's the DLC?

Looks like it's basically the Menorah plot and Fiend battles from Nocturne, ending with a boss fight against Demi-Fiend. Presumably you unlock them for fusion after beating them like in Nocturne (I'm hoping Daisoujou is still as OP as he was)

I'll order this tomorrow then. I went full physical in SMTIII and doing a few turns of buffs and debuffs and then killing God with about 4 super punches to the face was really satisfying

Punch it until it dies is the best strategy.

So are the buff and debuff spells still as ridiculously overpowered as in the PS2 games?

They've nerfed them so they work more like Persona. I only have the defense buff so far but it's single target and only lasts 3 turns. Stack up to 3 times I think.
The Magatsuhi skills seen OP af though. Once you build up the meter and activate the skill, it makes all your skills land criticals for one turn, combine that with the press turn system and you get a double turn, all crits. It's great. The enemies can do it too, though

A few thoughts after playing this for most of yesterday and this morning. I woke up today thinking about demon fusions and skill builds so it's safe to say this game has its claws in me.
Exploring the overworld is fantastic, it looks incredible in handheld mode. The QoL changes are all really good for smoothing out some of SMTs rougher edges, eg. no random battles, and the changes to the demon compendium make planning out fusions much less of a ballache.
Am at the first proper boss fight, and it's kicking my arse in the same way Matador did in Nocturne, and Minotaur did in IV, and it's playing the same role of a skill check to make sure you've been paying attention. Some people were worried that Atlus were gonna make things easier to go for more mass market appeal like Persona, and I'm glad to see that this is not the case. It's still definitely an SMT game. (There is an easy mode free DLC for those people who just wanna see the story play out)
Loving it. Got the week off and gonna play the hell out of this.

Are there any problems with Nocturne on the Switch? Noticed it when I was buying V and was slightly tempted
I did not see Digital Devil Saga. Sad face

I loved it, played through the entire thing with no issues (handheld mode)
I thought Atlus did a great job with the remaster and it looked really good. Gonna go back to it at some point for the other endings.

I think the Switch version had some bad loading issues on the initial Japanese release, affecting menu responsiveness, but it's massively improved with patches.
