I've heard others say Guardian of Light is the best Tomb Raider. I don't think it is a particular hot take.
And it isn't that surprising for people to say it about a game that plays completely differently from the other games in the series. Not liking Tomb Raider is not a guarantee you wouldn't like GoL. I played it co-op with a buddy who doesn't have any interest in the main series and we both had a good time with it.
Now, if someone said Angel of Darkness was the best Tomb Raider...

I watched a retrospective on Tomb Raider from Steve of Warr. Actually really worth watching/having on in the background. The thing that I completely forgot about is how difficult the early games are, especially towards the end. I think he mentioned the ending of the first one being an utter bastard to finish.

Considering what a huge mainstream title it was I’d be amazed if half the audience even got halfway through Tomb Raider 1. It really was an absolute bastard at times.

Another vote for Guardian of Light being the best game with the Tomb Raider attached. Game was an absolute blast.

Yeah I think I got stuck around halfway through, and I must have been 11/12 at the time it came out! The first Tomb Raider I completed was the reboot

Yesterday's Deus Ex news sucks. (More for those who have lost their jobs than for me, sitting here complaining about a game I'd have liked to play, admittedly.)
Both Eidos Montreal and the Deus Ex franchise deserved better. Oh, and fuck Embracer Group - they're a stain on the industry, and the sooner they bugger off altogether, the happier I'll be.

I don't remember Tomb Raider 1 being especially difficult. Though I was probably better, more persistent and had a lot more free time back then.

I've not heard of this Tomb Raider TBS game, but it sounds like it's the best in the series.
I remember the first and second games being overly long rather than outright hard. Never completed either of them.

I don't have any lasting memory of 1 being hard either but as stated above, I had endless time to throw at games so gradual persistence would have overcome any difficulty.
Although I don't remember the specifics, I do feel like they layered on bullshit in 2 so I don't remember ever completing it.
Back on topic, I installed the OG Deus Ex the other night on the laptop in the hope that there was a pad control scheme for it l. Could be good on SteamDeck I thought.
Unfortunately, it required a bunch of ini file editting to get it working yet nothing was mapped and the sensitivity of right stick was off the scale. I really fancied having a go but I cannae be arsed to restart the game over and over while I fine tune/test stick speeds.

I've had the same issue with a bunch of older PC games recently. I no longer have the endless time to throw at it to get it set up right, and I'd probably just abandon it after an hour of playtime anyway

That's the exact mental trade off that I was making. How long is it going to take me to get this all configured up to the point I'm happy with it Vs how long am I'm going to realistically play this for.

My main memory of what made Tomb Raider 1 difficult were the jumping puzzles, traps and drownings rather than the combat.
Admittedly it was possibly the first fully 3d platformer I’d played so it took a bit of getting used to but I certainly remember a lot of crumpled bodies at the bottom of missed ledges.
The blocky textures probably didn’t help since you could get turned around a lot in some dungeons and have to repeat timed lever pulls multiple times if you weren’t quick enough to get around.

I think if I was playing it now I'd get fucked off very quickly but back then this was amazing and I didn't care/know any better.
I remember other 3d games having really shitty edge detection back then so having to just jumps off edges were super frustrating. The OCD part of my brain really appreciated the precision you could have lining yourself up for jumps.

Y’know what I enjoyed a lot that literally no one talks about anymore?
That Duke Nukem Time to Kill game that was basically Duke Tomb Raider.

I've still got my copy of Duke Nukem Time to Kill. It's not too bad actually! I vaguely remember the awkward close the bedroom door, whilst I was in the strip club.

I played 1 and 2 recently and very much enjoyed them. Perhaps a little bit frustrating at times, although much of that came from the 2nd game regularly crashing on the Steam Deck when you died. I did also need to have a walkthrough on hand for a few bits, but that is pretty much par for the course of playing older games (playing FF7 at the moment and have constantly needed to glance at a walkthrough to have any clue as to where to go next).
Tomb Raider 2 definitely does go bigger in scale and levels are more complex to navigate. That comes with some positives, where the levels are much more interesting, but can make the game harder to play.
Picked up the rest of the original games and also the original Crystal Dynamic trilogy to play on Steam Deck. Also have the similar Indiana Jones and The Infernal Machine, which I'm really looking forward to returning to.

Stuff like that cavern with the sphinx head felt *huge* at the time, and still feel bigger in the original than in Anniversary for some reason.
I don't remember combat being particularly hard, just stupid and boring. But the platforming was great, if finicky. Actually, Anniversary had some much harder boss battles, because some of them it was really unclear what you had to do.

I remember playing final fantasy 7 the first time and I downloaded a guide off a bulletin board explaining how to get the Knights of The Round magic spell. From what I remember you had to jump through a lot of hoops to breed a golden Chocobo that could fly so it could take you to a remote island. The spell was well worth it though.

Just realised that the Lara Croft Collection ( Guardian of Light and the other one) is on Switch already. (note, only local multiplayer on Switch)
That's another "I already own it on Steam but it sounds like it'd be more fun on the sofa" switch game added to the wishlist.

It was on offer recently, but I don’t really care to much for the sequel, so it’s still a tad expensive for myself. I’ll probably end up getting it after I’ve played the PlayStation remasters.

A lot of these games on switch aren't expensive in and of themselves, they're just expensive in an 'i already own this on Steam and I've never played it' kinda way.

We're never getting the third part of that trilogy that ends with Jensen witnessing Paul and JC Dentons' embryos being created are we.
Fucking hell, we'd be lucky to get some godawful IDW comic book version of a third installment at this point.
