News:
I think it might be finally time for me to play the original game again. I've put it off for long enough.
Hrrm. But then... do I play them all again, and do I go through them in chronological order, or order of release? It would be kind of a disappointment to end again where Mankind Divided left off, but on the other hand... Invisible War.

I played the original. And I think the second one? But what came after that I have no idea. Should I?

As released:
Deus Ex (2000) Deus Ex: Invisible War (2003) Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011) Deus Ex: The Fall (2013) Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (2016).
In timeline order:
2027 - Deus Ex: Human Revolution 2027 - Deus Ex: The Fall 2029 - Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
2052 - Deus Ex 2072 - Deus Ex: Invisible War
(The version of The Fall on Steam is an upgraded port of a mobile game, it takes place alongside Human Revolution with characters who appeared in a tie-in novel that was a direct prequel to HR.)

I’d say play release order if you were doing a replay.
The events of the Jenson games seem so detached from the Denton games I don’t think you really need to worry about continuity.

I’d probably just play Deus Ex then Human Revolution.
Just couldn’t take to Mankind Divided for some reason, can’t even remember anything about it. The plot with his secret upgrades was too complicated and boring maybe. It didn’t have the amazing art direction of Human Revolution.

I really enjoyed both but where Human Revolution felt like a movie, Mankind Divided was more like the follow-up tv series

I don't really want to play the original with the Revision mod, even though it's free on Steam, because it changes too much. So I started looking up others, and Transcended seems like a good one to play with. Stays faithful to the original while fixing a whole bunch of stuff.
Some amusing bits from the Transcended patch notes:

I've played the original too many times for me to want it again as is. So the Revision mod is tempting.
I'm happy that the series isn't dead, but I worry a bit about a new one. I don't trust developers to not just make it a huge open world map and fill it with tat.

Also, I recommend (?) that people track down and read the comics they made for Human Revolution. They're funny as fuck, they even name-drop the title.

Is the fall worth playing? Didn’t even know it existed.

I really enjoyed both but where Human Revolution felt like a movie, Mankind Divided was more like the follow-up tv series That might be a good way of describing it. I came at Mankind Divided a few times but bounced right off it, just couldn’t care about what was happening for some reason. I’d suggest that the series’ weird need to have totally incompatible endings followed by direct sequels that make a hash of those endings is a part of it. The series should probably just be a cyberpunk anthology series where the characters and continuity doesn’t try to carry across at all. Human Revolution probably worked so well because it was a prequel unbound by the end of Deus Ex, and also just some great sci-fi about the socio-political effects of advent of body modification. Mankind Divided never developed that clarity of purpose for me in the time it would take me to lose interest.

I'm still proud on my foxiest of the hounds achievement in Human Revolution. A game that does stealth quite well. You could do a pacifist run, too, with exception of the bosses, and there is also an achievement for it.

I did the pacifist/ghost/no alarms/hardest difficulty thing for Human Revolution, as part of the same playthrough.
I don't think I'd have the patience for it now, though. Saving Malik was a giant pain in the behind while trying to be non-lethal.

I have been thinking of giving Human Revolution a go again (never gave it a proper go). Am I better off playing the original version or the Director's Cut? (On PC, hopefully on Steam Deck as my last attempt was on a Linx Vision)

Directors cut is more "complete" but the port is not great.
I think Nixxes handled the original port and it worked well, but the DC wasn't handled by them and frankly it's laggy. Certain areas drop frames a distracting amount.
I'm not too precious about that kind of thing, but it was noticeably laggy on my last PC (which had reasonable specs.)

I think I have all the DLC for the original version too if that makes a difference.

HR-DC version integrates the DLC into the main plot, unskippable, whereas before you could only play it as a standalone.
EDIT:
It just ocurred to me, the much maligned boss fights in the original version of Human Revolution were completely re-done for the Directors' Cut, and are much better for it.

In timeline order:
2027 - Deus Ex: Human Revolution 2027 - Deus Ex: The Fall 2029 - Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
2052 - Deus Ex 20?? - Project Snowblind
2072 - Deus Ex: Invisible War Just picked up the original Deus Ex in the steam sale for a grand total of 69p. Probably not going to actually play it again, but wanted to have it on hand if I felt the urge. The DVD is in another country. PS/ If you want to be *really* complete about it you should probably play Project Snowblind too. store.steampowered.com/app/7010/Project_Snowblind/

I always mean to replay Deus Ex but have given up on the Statue of Liberty mission so many times.
I know its a game that grows and grows as the plot expands but it really is a shame to have the biggest drag in the game also be the first thing you do

Just grind through it, it's not a long mission, it just pushes all the obsessive buttons.

I didn’t realise that was considered a low point. I always enjoyed that opening level, I think it’s quite cool.

I've been through all of them a couple of times except Invisible War. At the time it came out I was desperate to play it, but my PC wasn't special enough in the graphics region. Now my PC is hench enough, but I'm not sure time has been kind to it, and if I'm feeling retro I just default to the original.
I suspect you can probably, in terms of story, play through the more recent two games to get caught up on anything important. And I would replay the first because it's great. Or just watch a video summary.

I miss Human Revolution. Current-gen remaster pls. Judging by the talk of Embracer Group CEO I think they may cancel the the rumoured Deus Ex game and everything else just to focus on Lord of The Rings.
