The main issue I have with poor remakes is that it destroys any fantasy you had of that *perfect* remake and it's unlikely the original SH2 will ever get a good remaster now
I don't think the combat in SH is suppose to be good - it's not really what it's about
Have there been any video game remakes that are generally considered to be better than the original?

Remake is such a wide ranging term. If we discount remasters, and only look at games that have been rebuilt from the scratch, it can include things that remain very faithful, through to games that add so much content it's a distinct game.
Off the top of my head, remakes that have been highly regarded include:
The Gamecube remake of Resident Evil 1 is a better game than the original.
Wonderboy and the Dragons Trap is a very faithful remake, but unless your an archivist is hard to imagine why you'd prefer the original (which is included anyway).
Resident Evil 2 vs it's remake is trickier to call - the remake is great, and objectively better by most measures but the original is so iconic, it's maybe more of a classic.
Not played the original loads, and it was never a true classic, but I think the remake of Mafia is better than the original.
Not played FF7 Remake, but it's very highly regarded. But it's different enough to not supplant and replace the original.
Shadow of the Colossus remake was highly regarded and can be considered better than the original, and is very faithful to the original.

The problem I have is that "game where troubled protagonist explores spooky place with monsters that represent his inner demons" is a trope as old as, well, the (Silent) Hills at this point. Or Jacob's Ladder. It just doesn't have the same effect on me anymore. What other games do that? Off the top of my head, The Evil Within 1 and 2, Devotion, Soma, Observer, Hellblade, Amnesia, Strangeland, etc. If you want to branch out into other mediums, the "you are fighting a monster BUT THE REAL MONSTER IS DEPRESSION" thing has been real common in movies recently. It's not like all of those are carbon copies of Silent Hill or anything. But psychological horror is a crowded genre now, and another remake of Silent Hill doesn't excite me as much as it might have, say, a decade ago.

While I still think that trailer looks great, I was looking up Blooper Team's past history, what makes them the best people to do it justice?
Blair Witch, Medium and Layers of Fear don't really inspire me, but some people here seem to see it as a good fit. I've kind of avoided those games based off various reviews, and maybe I'm not giving them enough credit to do a good job, so what am I missing?

According to the video, it's because they really like Silent Hill 2

Hmm, how many "reallys"?
If they really, really, really like it, then that's 'OK', I suppose.

Zuluhero Well, I've played Medium while it was on gamepass and enjoyed it. It certainly had some problems and the sensitive mental material it was dealing with perhaps could be handled better, but on the other hand it did have strong Silent Hill vibes aesthetically and, I guess, if they do not stray far away from the source material it will be alright, even great!

They should remake Nocturne with better controls. That was ace.

According to the video, it's because they really like Silent Hill 2 Basically. In interviews for The Medium they more or less said we've made this to show Konami how much we love SH and want to make a SH game.

Yeah think it was their passion that won them it, going by what was said in the transmission.
I still think they are a good fit but we'll see. Too early to tell imo as we've not been shown nearly enough to get a proper impression.

I remember when it came out, blown away by how good it looked, particularly the shadows etc. Same engine was used for the three Blair Witch games I believe. Never played them as didn't have a PC that could run them at the time. Shame. Would like to actually.

Bloober team getting the opportunity is in line with every other Western studio made SH game. They contact Konami and say they like SH and want to make a game and Konami says yes.

Maybe we should band together and tell them how much we love it and maybe they'll give us a shot. Better yet, just send them a link to this thread.

Could you imagine? It wouldn't even get off the ground as it would be a collection of middle aged men saying "ackshully..."

But think of the Easter eggs; Sausage Flasks, Stained technogel mattresses, and shit on chairs...
This game would practically write itself.

Only if we were allowed to take a few liberties. But yeah, I think it could work.
"After receiving a reprimand from his wife for shitting on a chair, Edward Cosse takes a terrifying trip to the small, lakeside town of Sausage Hill, in an attempt to find a new technogel pillow. The question is not what brought him there, but will he get his sausage out the flask?"

Decks banned him while drunk just before he stopped being a mod, no one noticed and so it remained as a permanent ban, I think he had escaped bans in the past for his ability to be excessively argumentative and also for his complete inability to use Google.

I'm currently watching a playthrough of this in my Covid addled state and man I totally forgot how janky this game was. There's definitely a lot that needs improving in terms of the seemingly obtuseness for the sake of being obtuse of the gameplay at times such as the apartment complex which really isn't that 'fun' as well as the god awful voice acting of some of the cast.

The voice acting has always been a part of what makes everything feel so off and not quite real. I like it

I totally hadn’t paid enough attention to the Silent Hill announcements, one of the new games is by the devs who made Observation? I really enjoyed that game
Maybe that sort of thing would be the best direction for the series. Smaller, weirder higher concept games rather than just another town full of gooey babies, nurses and pyramid heads.
