I stumbled onto the Resetera thread about this and my god some people there are just so up their own arses it's unbelievable. They're so fucking pretentious. In what way? There were some people saying that people who aren't real fans won't really appreciate the remake and you need to really evaluate things in your life if you're jumping into this game for the first time purely because the graphics look good. It's the worst kind of snobbery and gatekeeping that has soured gaming for me at times. |

Ach, that kind of bullshit is everywhere. Gatekeeping is as rife as hyperbole in gaming circles these days. Fuck all that off.
This is what fucks me off as well: Why can't people just show enthusiasm in anything these days? What a hyper critical bunch of fuckeggs we gamers are. As far as I'm concerned we're getting a beautiful RE4, a beautiful Dead Space, a beautiful System Shock and a beautiful Silent Hill 2 all in the near(ish) future. Are they new? No, but there's a fucking shit load of new IPs coming out all the time if that's your thing. It's shiny versions of some of the best horror games of the last 20 odd years. At very worst they can serve to rekindle interest in their respective franchises and prompt people to seek out and enjoy the original games, at the very best we're going to have fucking immense versions of the games we grew up loving. How the hell is that anything other than a good thing?

There was only 1 bit I saw that had an over the shoulder camera, which is the gamer's POV - the rest seemed cinematic, so could be owt

Just watched the SH2 trailer and got a resounding meh. Looks too clean and...I dunno...Pyramid Head just looks like a gimp. I guess some things are best left as they are.

I means it's miserable and horrible, but at the same time great. Been ages since I last played it so enough time has passed that it will feel completely fresh again.

I suppose it's down to the graphics from 20 years ago but it seemed much more mysterious back then, not quite human and a demon with a kind of imposing, featureless head.
The graphics look too nice and it just looks like a well toned bloke with a big leather triangle on his head.
As someone who isn't really into survival horror, what SH2 did was just far and away one of the best, most haunting things. So much of that was the fuzzy grime aesthetic. This is far too clean and makes it all look a bit silly.

I think it looks fine.
The problem I have is that "game where troubled protagonist explores spooky place with monsters that represent his inner demons" is a trope as old as, well, the (Silent) Hills at this point. Or Jacob's Ladder. It just doesn't have the same effect on me anymore.
That said, if this introduces other people to Silent Hill 2, I'm all for it existing. It's just not something that excites me personally.

I kind of agree with geefe. From the trailer we saw, my inkling is that the remake will be more dramatic and cinematic than the original - the way James seems to storm into the bathroom and the thing with his hand seemed a bit OTT. He seems out of it for most of the original, as do most characters. It'll be a western dev interpretation of the game, and they tend to look towards films
Compare the same scene in the bathroom with the original. It's much more ordinary in the remake without the dutch angle
I also expect the new ending will have James stay in Silent Hill with Mary/Maria

It's not like the old game is going to disappear from Earth, so I'm fine with a remake that tries to do things differently. After all, if it's shit, I can just go back and play the old version (at least on Xbox, so a Steam re-release for everyone else would be nice).
Mind, it will probably *play* better than SH2. Because that game sure didn't play all that well.
Ah well, I'm more interested in the AITD remake myself. Still, this could be fun too.
