Played a bit more on Sunday (playtime 4 hours) still in the apartments and have to say...and please don't attack me, but I am a bit bored! I'm annoyed at myself for this as I loved the original and I'm certain I will love this, but I am just frustrated at the moment. Not sure what to do next I have found the first coin and just met Eric, who reminds me of Jimmy from GTAV what do I do next...explore more of the 3rd floor ? |

I will just say, the map in this game is great. I am not sure how you could get lost, it pretty much circles and indicates where you should be heading and what you have access to. Not once did I get lost or not know where to go. Check the map!
The end game counter said I checked the map just shy of 1500 times!!! Maybe an over-reliance on it perhaps.

True, though there’s no indication (AFAICT) that something new has appeared, though it will typically appear after a note or item has been discovered.
I’m appreciating the game design which allows one to progress and then open up a shortcut back to a save point. Having only played this once on PC 20+ years ago I had the luxury of saving anywhere. 😎

I couldn't remember myself (re: apartments) but the game filters you where you need to go fairly well I thought. As Zissou said, just get your exploring on.

Will do, perhaps it is because I was playing at 4am this morning before work so clock watching rather than enjoying/exploring. I am on the 3rd floor, the part of it you needed to unlock the door to access, so hopefully I will find what I am looking for later.

Massive spoiler only for those that have completed this or the original PS2 release....
I never played the original but I heard that there was a lot of theories going around that Maria's body was either in the boot or on the back seat of the car.
In the remake, there is a blanket in the back seat of the car with quite a large object underneath, suggesting it is Maria's body.
It is very hard to see, but if you change the filter in the graphics option to "outline-Posterize", you can clearly make out the outline of the covered body on the seat.
I guess they made it difficult to see otherwise it would spoil the plot reveal right from the get go, but it's a nice little touch.

Made it to the hotel. It’s absolutely superb. I always liked how eerie this place was, even compared to the rest of the game. It’s, unsurprisingly, even better now.

Ah man. Been watching the other half play this and she’s about half way through and scared as fudge. I, on the other hand have found the experience to be completely flat. I guess I don’t have a soul or anything, but I’m finding it to be as flat as the original. Not doing anything for me at all.
The original feels to me like something I would have to let myself be fearful of, but it doesn’t force me to be scared. The static from the radio, the visual metaphors. They’re just limp compared to what my own brain could torture me with.
I can’t hold it against the game though. The genre in general, in both game and film form, just barely provokes a reaction from me. I find stuff like Mr.X in Resi 2 a hundred times more scary as that actively takes away your sense of safety and forces you to keep half a thought on where they are, where your exit points are, etc… That pushes you into a semi-panic state. This game is more like “look at this. Imagine how scary that must be!”, with the occasional jump scare (that I’m also immune to unless I’m drawn into it).
Glad folk here love it though and jealous of the kicks my girlfriend is getting out of it. Just not my cup of tea.

I can't imagine being scared watching someone else play a horror game. I've watched someone play through System Shock 2 and didn't find that scary but found it terrifying to play myself

I think some things just have to be experienced a certain way.
I have never been creeped out or scared by films or games, I think I am generally immune. But there is one film which is an exception......the 1st Paranormal Activity.
I have heard a lot of people say that it wasn't scary at all. However, I watched that late at night, in bed, lights off, with headphones on. It is easily the scariest thing, perhaps the only thing I have ever watched that I found truly un-nerving. It un-nerved me so much that I was still thinking about it the following morning. Even when I went to put the sequel on some weeks later I was slightly trembling with anticipation.
Wouldn't have had the same effect playing in a brightly lit room, or sitting on the sofa watching with friends. Not sure why that 1 film had so much effect when no others did though.

Scariest thing I have ever seen is the opening to Inglorious Bastards. That sort of thing scares me. The idea that you’re skirting around something horrific and your imagination is given time to realise how severe it could be. Stuff like that scares me. The idea of somebody possibly being around a corner or unfolding somebody else’s trauma just doesn’t do it.

The unexplainable for me, which I think is why this weird surreal vibe really gets to me. Plus I hate the idea of things hiding in the dark. Think I'd probably die immediately if I ever ended up in the middle of deep water at night.
Anyway, found that cunt Pyramid Head again and I don't like being chased either.

Oft. Finished up the Prison this evening; had actually done most of it in an inebriated state on Saturday night, just had to do the final Yard puzzle. Genuinely incredible sequence, that. I don't think I've ever really felt darkness being used so effectively in a horror game, which sounds odd.
And then, of course, I've ran into the game-breaking bug that seems to have been introduced with the new patch, blocking progress in the Labyrinth lol About twenty Steam forum threads on it. Guess I'll see if they get an emergency hotfix out.

Been obsessed with horror since a teenager, whether books, films, games, etc. I'm 40 now, but I still regularly get the absolute shit scared out of me -- and it often stays with me for days later too. I'm glad I never lost that, tbh. |

Paranormal Activity scared the living shit out of me at the time too. And Blair Witch, The Grudge, The Ring and more recently The Witch. Anything where there is room for your mind to go wild after the fact.
Anyway, I’m in the this is probably too scary for me to pay full price for camp! I was going to get it but reading the thread has really put me off! I only got a couple of hours into the original back in the day and sounds like they’ve made it even more unnerving.
