They've also nailed that thing where you sweep your flashlight across the room, some beastie (usually the legs on legs monsters) doesn't move, a second after you've swept your beam by it you realise what you saw, shit yourself, look back and it's scurrying off/at you. I've shouted a couple of times at the jump scares, which is a first outside of VR Resi 7.

I’m perhaps siding with the camp of too much focus on combat as, my time goes on with the game. I think I’d like the option to avoid the enemies, like the original. It just seems easier to confront every enemy, as they have some crazy leaping attacks.

I've not played the original game so I can't compare but I like the fact that even in tighter areas, the enemies don't all rush you. A lot of times you see them wandering aimlessly about between rooms in the torchlight, giving you enough time to search an area before engaging.
The sound design is great for creeping you out as well, knowing something is nearby but still out of sight.

Also, the flashlight gets worse right? I'm running around the prison yard and can barely see my own fucking gun. Can't remember a game that's commited so fully to actually sticking you in darkness. Makes Resi look like polar day.

Fuck me, this is brilliant.
And I'm *still* in the streets but I'm taking my super sweet time with it and doing all side quests.
The jukebox reward gave me some shivers. This game is brilliantly fucked up.

You have to engage every enemy in the apartments and hospital. And there are moments when you are in a tight area and you’re getting smacked in the face because they’ve jumped out at you. And this goes make to what makes Silent Hill scarier. That you find yourself helpless in fighting some of these. There’s almost a must to fight enemies in this. It’s not a massive negative but there are times when I’m like.. great another bloody nurse.

I'm definitely legging it by some in the prison. I've also turned the combat difficulty down because I'm not here for it, the atmosphere and slowly unravelling story, surprisingly good puzzles and outstanding level and world design is everything. Combat is okay, but I think if I were playing on a harder difficulty I'd also want less of it.

I just can't get behind finding the legs creepy they just look silly! I think I find complete mannequins scarier. Playing condemned caused that as they were everywhere.

Here’s a great example. I’m in the hospital and three different enemy types are coming at me in a hallway. I can’t run away as they follow me through doors. Trying to shoot them, whilst all three come at you. It’s very much Resident Evil remake level of combat.

In my experience it's rare that multiple enemies rush you at once. Yes it happens, but it's infrequent. For me it at least mixes up the way I approach combat and you have to be ready for anything.

The combat in these games will always feel a bit shit though. If it felt like call of duty to handle the weapons there would be no threat at all as you would steamroll everything. Resident evil combat is always a average as well. It's the problem that occurs as soon as you put a weapon in a characters hands. I honestly have no idea how to address it either.
For me it doesn't detract from the game at all as it's pretty much expected by now.

Yeah of course. It’s a clear design choice, as otherwise you wouldn’t have x amount of ammo and health littered everywhere.

Against my reservations, I got this on PC and while not technically "perfect" (did not expect such on my i7-9700/3070) I'm loving it so far - if "loving" implies "feeling uneasy" that is

It's not the fact they're legs that's freaking me out, it's the fact that I've scoured a room with a torch, can't see anything at all, and then I move and the fucking thing just jumps out of whichever shadow I thought was just a shadow. It could be a cream cake jumping out, id shit shit em

It’s when you pass the flashlight over and you think you see one so you sweep back and yep, right there. Then the flashlight flickers and the fucking thing comes at you.
Don’t even get me started on the other ones.

I absolutely love the idea of horror/scary games, but I'm an absolute pussy. I basically buy the majority of them and finish few as I just get too freaked out.
Reading this thread has probably saved me sixty quid as this sounds way too scary for me! Looks and sounds absolutely amazing though and I suspect the next time I'm a bit drunk I'll end up buying it.
Loved Alan Wake 2 last year though so will probably go and do the DLC on that next week to make myself feel a bit better for missing out on this.

The trick, as I have found, is to simply get slightly inebriated before embarking on said adventure. And have some backup for fucks sake.

Hahaha good man, that's basically how I got through Resi 2 Remake (albeit a good portion of that wasn't slightly inebriated, it was pretty battered!) so might have to get stuck in!

Last time I played a SH game was about 20 years ago, took some acid with a couple of friends and thought it would be the right time to play. They let me have first go and I spent what felt like days sucked into the screen living out this nightmare, eyes locked on the screen. I finally looked round because I hadn’t heard them say anything for a while, they were both sat holding pillows in front of their faces like a pair of children

Re being too "scared" to play horror games, I don't get it one bit, much like horror films. The scarier or unsettling the better or at least I have not played, read or seen anything that has made me to scared to continue. Isn't the brain a peculiar thing! now spiders on the other hand at least anything bigger than an inch, then I get what you are saying 😯👍

I'm same with most survival horror games. It's as if i get so immersed my brain and body forgets that i am playing a game, and reacts like i am actually there.
If i am being persistently pursued or chased it's worse.
First person is even worse.
I managed to complete RE2 remake but RE7 was a nope out.
Horror movies have little to no effect, so it must be something to do with the interactive nature of the experience.

Well I just completed the game. Gotta say I really enjoyed it.
I got the 'water' ending, not sure how to get the others so I am gonna read up on that.
The last area 'hotel' was quite bright compared to the prison so it was a nice reprieve, not sure I could of handled even more oppressive darkness.
No spoilers, dont worry. The ending got me thinking a lot which I like in a game. Its not your typical horror and is really well done.
Blooper team did an amazing job, but I'll leave it a while though before another playthrough, it's just so bleak.
Only downsides. 1. The way James walks and runs 2. The way Maria runs for her life...haha she was in no hurry.

Don't want to go full right wing nutter here, but if prisons were like this, there'd be absolutely no crime. I really want out.

And now I'm in the labyrinth I'd like to go back to prison.
Relentless. Whoever dreamt this up in the first place must be a complete wreck.
The boss that starts that area off was... horrible.
