I only realised recently that a lot of my early gaming was done on platforms that had been out for quite a bit. Makes sense because my folks wouldn’t have wanted to pay full price for a brand new one, but it means I sound a bit older than I actually am for the first few (but not by much).
Anyway:
Atari 2600 - mid 80s, best games were Joust and Bump n Jump
Speccy 48k - mid to late 80s, played lots of Rainbow Island, Super Wonder Boy, Silkworm. Think I also had a very bad version of How To Be A Complete Bastard which I thought was *hilarious*
Atari 520ST, closely followed by Amiga 1200. Grouped these together because I have real trouble remembering which games were on which system. Highlights were Stunt Car Racer, Carrier Command, Hired Guns, and most of the “classics”
PlayStation (One) - Basically the turning point that made me a gamer forever. So many hours on Wipeout 2097 in the late 90s after going out clubbing, or GTA 1 and 2 anytime. Then it was my FF VII machine in University halls.
PC gaming, circa 1995 - 2005. Carmageddon, Frontier: Elite 2, Command and Conquer were highlights. Not much in the way of shooters funnily enough, then after C&C Generals I left PC gaming behind completely.
PlayStation 2 - best system ever, consumed every entry in the GTA, Final Fantasy, Tekken, Hitman series’
Gamecube - I wasn’t that bothered by Mario or Zelda on my first Nintendo console (I’m sorry, I have seen the error of my ways), but played the shit out of Mariokart Double Dash and RE4
Xbox 360 - switched sides away from PlayStation because PS3 was too expensive. Never looked back. Too many games to highlight, but RIP XBLIG.
Wii - First time I had more than one console at once. Finally “got” Zelda with Twilight Princess. Played RE4 all over again with motion aiming.
Xbox One / One X - doesn’t feel old enough to reminisce about just yet.
Switch
Xbox Series X

My heart bleeds for the multi spectrum owners. 5 REM Brand lulz 10 PRINT "Lol @ Amstrad owners" 20 GO TO 10 Plenty of good memories playing on the Amstrad. Don't think I was old enough to be aware of the Spectrum or anything else around that time so no idea if I was missing out on anything. We did get the colour adapter for it eventually which was very exciting
Completely forgot I had a Vita and PSP

Either I’m making my systems last a long time, or some of you lot have a hell of a Gaming Habit. I thought 11 different ones since the my childhood was a fair amount - a new one every 3 years or so. Apparently some folks treat them like iPhones and get a new shiny every year!

Great thread, darkling! Spectrum ZX Game Boy Mega Drive [enormous gap] PS4 PS5 I didn't really get into gaming, in terms of it being a bona fide hobby, until 2015. Out of interest, was there a particular game that dragged you back into gaming?

I mostly want to hear the stories of people who owned things like a Gamescom, or Nokia NGage, or maybe even the crazy rich nineties coke fiends that had enough money for a Neo Geo AND some of those crazy £90 games.

Binatone CPC464 Atari ST Gameboy SNES N64 Xbox (chipped and in crystal ) DS Gamecube Xbox 360 Wii PS4 Vita PS5 CPC464 followed by an Atari ST was a rough start in the playground, but I got there in the end. Fondest memories probably with the SNES, N64 and the chipped Xbox.

rawshark Yeah - Grand Theft Auto V. My brother had a PS3, and I was able to mess about on it from time to time. I enjoyed dicking around in GTA V, but something clicked when I stopped trying to see how many cars I could fit into a swimming pool and actually played the campaign (what a concept, huh?).
I picked up a PS4 and my own copy of GTA, and never looked back

CPC464 followed by an Atari ST was a rough start in the playground, but I got there in the end. Fondest memories probably with the SNES, N64 and the chipped Xbox. Don’t think I’d have minded being teased for my Atari or Amiga by Sega kids - most of my peers couldn’t be arsed with gaming at all. It was all Panini stickers and Boglins and stuff like that.

In this order:
Spectrum 48k Sega Master System Various Game & Watch Nintendo Gameboy NES Nintendo GBC Super Nintendo PS1 PS2 Nintendo Gameboy Advance GameCube (I was given it) Nintendo Wii Nintendo DS (various) Nintendo 3DS (Various) PS3 Xbox 360 Nintendo Wii U PS4 PS Vita Nintendo Switch (various) Xbox Series S
As a kid my family were fairly poor. As a general rule I got the outgoing system as a new one released. This is also the reason why I never had any of the later Sega systems and the reason why I abandoned Nintendo entirely during the PS1,PS2 days. I had to back a horse and hope I backed the right one. PS2 was the first console I bought with money earned from work.
The Nintendo DS is probably my favourite system of all time due to the form factor of the lite and the variety on offer in terms of software. Everything from classic Castlevania's and Final Fantasy's to curios like Hotel Dusk, Phoenix Wright and the broad appeal of games like 41 all time classics, brain age and Nintendogs etc. Switch is pushing it though. Away from Nintendo I'd have to say the PS1. Final fantasy 7-9 Gran Turismo, ISS, Resident Evil. Wow

Fuck me, you had a videopac as well? Now we are two. I'd honestly forgotten all about it until a couple of years ago when something triggered a switch in my brain and all these memories came flooding back of playing on it. Did some googling of systems of the time until I saw a photo of the Videopac and knew instantly that's what it was.

Pretty nuch the standard old fart list that we’re all producing. Reading the thread has reminded me of a couple of little loved and short lived purchases.
Like many others it starts with a Binatone probably around the turn of the 80’s, followed by
Spectrum 48k Megadrive Atari ST Barcode Battler Crappy beige mail order 486 SX 25 PC Gamegear Various PC upgrades that continue to this day Playstation Original DS DS Lite Xbox Gamecube Wii Xbox 360

Think my timings are off but:
Some kind of 8bit Atari - probably 800 XE. Bought second-hand, must be one of my earliest memories, going into this unknown persons house and finding 2 kids still playing it. My dad handed over some money and they packed it all up. I had no idea what was going on! I remember the games on tapes taking forever to load. Good times.
Amiga 500+ - Now we are cooking on gas! Probably some of my happiest memories with this machine. Copying games with friends, so many magical games.
Playstation 1 - Could not believe it when my parents took me to currys to buy one of these. They were nice people! This cemented my love of games, and I was the perfect age, it got me through my early teens.
N64 - Again, couldn't believe my Dad got me one for Christmas, I don't think I'd even asked for it! Goldeneye with friends, screen divided up with cardboard and sticky tape so we couldn't cheat.
Family PC - may have got the timeline jumbled, but 166 MMX or something. Encarta. X-Files, Bladerunner, Cyberia, Broken Sword etc. Also printing off porn on a really noisy bubble jet.
Playstation 2 - Uni. Timesplitters. Whities.
Gamecube - bought with hardship loan from uni. Instant regret, didn't play it very much.
Xbox - didn't have one at uni so got one when I moved to Bristol so I could hide in my room from the scary art school people I shared with.
PSP
PS3 - Great machine but I don't have many memories of it other than going through all the effort of Jailbreaking it for no reason.
Nintendo DS
PS4 - Possibly my favourite console along with PS2, until PS5 - Such an incredible library of games, just so fucking noisy!
PC/PS5/Switch/Steamdeck - here we are!

Honestly, I think my favourite gaming experience ever in recent time was playing Astro Boy and checking out all the Easter eggs. It was a similar feeling playing Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed back in the day. Still the best Sonic game… maybe ever?

Not counting later retro purchases.
Commodore Vic 20 (w/5K Ram expansion) Spectrum 48K (rubber key) Sega Master System (sold within a month due to game prices) Spectrum +2A Sega Game Gear (sold within a month due to battery cost) (US) CDTV (plus keyboard and floppy drive) Nintendo Gameboy Amiga 1200 Amiga CD32 PC (ongoing from here, starting with a 386 SX25 w/4MB RAM, only component left being the speakers) Sega Saturn N64 Playstation Sega Dreamcast Gamecube Gameboy Advance (unsure of exact release oder for the handhelds so trying to remember) Xbox PS2 Nintendo DS PSP Wii Xbox 360 (JP) PS3 (Korean) Vita (Korean) 3DS (US) Wii U PS4 (standard) PS5 Steam Deck (if we want to differentiate from PC)
I think that is most of them... Not including dupes or obsolete at the time hardware. Also had a bunch of arcade stuff that I have now got rid of
