He's right that all fans can probably identify part of their fanbase as similar. I've often wondered how our title winning campaigns of the 90s and 2000s would be viewed on Twitter, and I'm almost certain it will be as he described. It's all very odd. Without wanting to dig out overseas fans, but there do seem to be a large amount of international Arsenal fans who reply to every club/large account posts about signing players/sacking the manager etc. It's really dull.

Sure Newcastle fans have more to complain about than Liverpool ones right now but a dive into Newcastle social media is almost enough to make you stop supporting the team or watching football at all. They feed off their misery. I think if we had say a good cup run, a surprising league cup semi, they’d be more upset than if we got knocked out in the early rounds.

Anyone else watching the bbc series about the early years of the premier league?
Can’t beat a bit of nineties football.

Not so far but I guess you could queue it up on Spotify for some extra nostalgia when they are showing those classic Cantona and Shearer finishes.

I remember the kung fu kick like it was yesterday! going to the playground and acting it out. Makes you think if Cantona didn't do that, would United have won?

There's definitely a purity to supporting an EFL club that I miss. Aside from a few knuckle draggers from the more decorated clubs (us, Villa, Newcastle, West Ham, Forest and Derby mainly) having endless unwinnable arguments about which club is 'bigger', whatever that means, discussion was largely just about football. The fans cared about the team, their performances, and not much else.
I'm loving being back in the PL and getting to see world class football, but the not-football bits of it are mostly for the worst. We now get the last chorus of Marching on Together cut short so they can play the Official Premier League anthem. PL Twitter is embarrassing, whether it's Arsenal fans thinking only winning four of the last eight FA Cups means they're on track to become the next Bury, Man Utd fans wildly complaining that having only the second most expensive squad in world football means they're doomed for eternity, or our lot getting very irate that the owners have taken the Socios money and are sending us emails telling us why $LUFC fan tokens are a good thing (they're not).
I don't really have a point, just an observation, the football's better in the PL, everything else is worse. Also, fuck Socios.

I think FIFA FUT has a lot to answer for. It’s created a generation of fans that are utterly convinced they understand club management, and also they think they know about every player in the world so every signing comes down to ‘no we should get blah blah because he’s got 89 crossing ability’. The new player stats got released today and FT is absolutely full of debate around it. You can see how important it is to that generation.
It’s a double-edged sword because it also gets kids into football deeply in the first place. My kids went from being hardly interested to obsessive because of FUT and their understanding and appreciation of the game went up about 1000% almost immediately. But yeah, I do now have to listen to them lecturing me on why such and such who they’ve never even seen play is better than any player we have and it drives me mad.

Does the “double pivot” type bullshit come from FIFA? Never heard that once at the match but it’s all you ever read on Twitter

Does the “double pivot” type bullshit come from FIFA? Never heard that once at the match but it’s all you ever read on Twitter I don't think so. It's just a system with two holding midfielders. The phrase has been used a lot this year because Southgate played Rice and Phillips together throughout the Euros in a double pivot.

It's the sudden importance of numbers all across the pitch that do my tits in (I can forgive referring to a striker as a 9 because it's been a thing as long as I can remember). But the "Oh yeah, he's a classic number 6 him" stuff is the language of the fart sniffer.

Though what does come from FIFA is instead of describing a double pivot as two holding midfielders hearing people say "two CDMs".

Haha, yeah, FUT has definitely led to my lad using that sort of language. Not hugely different from Football Manager though really. Oh god, I daren't let him near that.

Yeah football manager has a lot to answer for too. The Euros were especially bad for everyone playing the coach when Southgate was only winning games by one goal.

Get this on the Villa forum where they say we should get this player because they have a favourable scouting report on fbref or some other website. Look he's in the nth percentile for presses. I don't care.

I'm personally not entirely sure if I prefer bring in the prem or championship. Obviously you could never wish to go down, but I don't think the yo yo teams like Norwich and West brom have it so bad - a mix of prem 'have a go' seasons then lording it in the championship ( which is a fantastic League by the way)

There are a lot of people who make videos about FPL talking about xG and xA. I was walking the dog on a Saturday afternoon, mid-last season... before any crowds were back in and in the pre-matches on R5 they had a long discussion about xG and "why it's so important". It's possibly the most bored I've ever been listening to football on the radio. I can see why it would matter if you are managing a team, or as you say, playing FPL... but it's perfectly possible to play and enjoy watching the game without it. I'm not adverse to the analytics that goes on, folks are free to do it, it just means nothing to me personally.

I try not to get too involved with any of that too - there's only one stat that matters etc. It can be quite useful to track trends/form or patterns but largely it's just noise to the average fan.

I don't even understand why it matters in FPL, unless there's a game mode I'm unaware of. You get points for goals, assists and clean sheets. Having an xG of 5 and scoring 1 or having an xG of 0.2 and scoring 1 gives you the same FPL score.

I imagine some are using it to decide who to transfer in, based on probability of scoring more points. Fuck that
