Was loving the game. But now just feel a little sick.
I remember when I was 10-15 wearing shinpads that had ankle supports that the foot had to be slid into like socks. These days players wear a tiny piece of plastic under the sock.
I do wonder what it would do to the amount of ankle injuries if players had to wear better protective equipment.
Seems mad that such money can be bandied about yet these rolled ankles to snapped ankles occur so frequently with little discussion about preventing them.

I just read through the Der Spiegel pieces for the first time. Yeah ... very uncomfortable reading that.

Is there a higher incidence of ankle injuries now compared to the early 90s? I'm not so sure. I'd love to see stats but certainly not something that jumps out to me as being a bigger thing now. There is a hell of a lot less hard tackles these days as well.

The tackle wasn’t a red. Just unfortunate leg tangling. I’m not sure why Klopp is allowed to walk onto the pitch and demand a red. I thought the same. I've seen the tackle but not close up - looked like a scissor tackle, which is a red normally. But as I say, not seen it close up. (Nor want to)

I used to wear those pads too, still have a pair. They were a bit more cumbersome but I have shocking ankles and they saved me more than once I am sure. I think they have been binned just because they are heavier and more difficult to play in.

Not a great time for a first trip to a prem game at ER in two decades. Never a red, and the second goal was definitely offside. Despite that, the scoreline flattered us. Mane could’ve had 5. I know the season won’t ride on playing the likes of Liverpool, but seeing in person the shiny new left back you were excited about a few weeks ago get made to look like a child by Salah repeatedly puts things in a bit of perspective. We’ll get better though. I expect to finish a bit lower than last season, but if we’re safe going into the final month or two then I’ll be satisfied.

I take it you haven't actually seen the second again. Incredibly onside.

The tackle wasn’t a red. Just unfortunate leg tangling. I’m not sure why Klopp is allowed to walk onto the pitch and demand a red. It's absolutely a red. Struijk wasn't in control at all. Both feet off the ground, from behind. We've adopted and encouraged a much higher level of risk this season. Challenges like this will become more common, and injuries with them. Because with greater risk, we increase the likelihood of "accidents." Imagine being arsed about the manager being on the pitch when a kid has just had his ankle done.

It was quite clearly an accident. Sometimes those happen in football, Christ.

If he’s behind the keeper he’s definitely a part of play since he’s directly in front of Raphinha and moves out of the way of the ball, but if he’s not there there’s a reasonable chance it’s cleared off the line. If he’s not actually behind the keeper then I will gladly take it back.

He's behind the ball. That's what keeps him onside.

"I couldn’t care less (if it was a red card), it is not my business. It is a serious injury, definitely for an 18-year-old boy. The red card is not important. Two or three weeks he can play on, Harvey will not."
Asked to elaborate on his discussion with Pawson, Klopp said: “It was nothing important. I am not sure it is the right moment to speak about these things.”
...
I'm pretty sure Klopp wasn't trying to get Struijk sent off - not least because according to the officials, Struijk was going anyway.
I also agree that it was an accident, my point is that accidents don't happen out of thin air - in this case, it happened not because Struijk was malicious, but because he wasn't in control.

On another note - Kalvin Phillips is absolutely brilliant. I paid almost no attention to the Euros so yesterday was the first time I watched him in any detail. What a player.

He's behind the ball. That's what keeps him onside. Mané was between the keeper and the defender on the line for Fabinho's goal. I feel like if you're offside and in the six yard box, you're interfering with play almost by definition. I was surprised it was given.

And to be fair, I've been in a horrible mood since parting company with my kids before kick off, so I'm seeing the worst in everyone and everything at the moment. Apologies that I'm coming across as a nark.

I don't believe the ref always intended to send him off, he played on initially after the tackle. It's similar to the Son incident where the horror of the injury influenced the decision.
Probably won't get overturned though because of Klopp and Liverpool.

He's behind the ball. That's what keeps him onside. I think you're thinking of Salah in the first goal. He was definitely behind the ball and onside. I meant the one where Fabinho poked in from the corner and Mane was standing behind the keeper and jumped out of the way of the ball.

Yeah, goat's post highlighted that I was thinking of the wrong goal! Only saw one quick replay, but initial view was that he was miles away from it but it was only a quick look (was cooking dinner!)

This is the one. A comical number of Liverpool fans on Twitter outraged even at the suggestion because they have no idea the rule is two players and not one defender for offside.

Ah yea, I thought you were talking about Salah's goal too. Hadn't seen that one, nor was t given any mention that I saw. Should have been an offside alright.

Certainly much closer to the ball that I thought, agree, should have been disallowed.
VAR is basically pointless now imo. Although I do think the move away from showing the footage has been a good one.

The only reason I can assume it wasn't given offside is because the defender on the line has his view blocked arguably more by Leeds' #2. But I'd have felt aggrieved if that goal was given against Liverpool for sure, and what's sauce for the goose is surely sauce for the gander.

No "clear and obvious error" seems to be why.
Had the ref disallowed it, that decision would likely have stood too.

Nice acknowledgment from Harvey. Hopefully it gets rescinded now.

Is anyone subscribed to The Athletic and uses the Android app? One thing that annoys me is the colour scheme, which can apparently be changed according to this but I can't find the option anywhere! theathletic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000104488-Theme-SettingsAm I missing something obvious? Edit: Ah, found it. Not sure why they just don't put the option in the settings tbh.
