Pirlo for Arteta? Doubtful? Pirlo is just the sort of glamorous but underwhelming appointment I’d expect of them. Way more likely than a winner like Conte.

I'm confused why real are offering so much for Mbappe when he only wants to go there and will do it for free next year. They are in a mess financially and seem desperate to make it worse.

Happy that Arsenal have signed a RB in Tomiyasu, even if I've got no idea if he's any good or not.
One interesting thing to note is that I believe the first XI is now made up entirely of players that Arteta has either signed or given contract extensions to. I'd argue that before this season Bellerin was 1st choice RB and I think it became clear that Arteta wasn't convinced.
The other players in the starting XI that were already there when he arrived - Auba/Xhaka/Saka/Smith Rowe - Arteta specifically convinced to stay and offered extensions to.
I may be missing someone but I think this is now comprehensively Arteta's team and if he can't get them playing well against the teams we actually have a shot at beating, then I think this season will be it for him.

Yeah. Obvious conclusion is Arsenal but I wonder if it’s a role at Spurs. He’s very close with Paratici.

I was listening to something the other day where the pundits were speculating whether Real know that there’s no chance of him coming this summer being its all about making a statement. Showing the fans you’re still in the game and the new galacticos aren’t beyond you (if only those blooming psg owners would be reasonable!) and showing the player how much you value him above when any other club could do

I can easily see Arsenal’s September being draws against Burnley and Norwich, a win the Carabao Cup and then a tonking when Spurs visit on the 26th.
It would be no shock to see Arteta replaced the week either side of the derby.

Showing the fans you’re still in the game and the new galacticos aren’t beyond you (if only those blooming psg owners would be reasonable!) and showing the player how much you value him above when any other club could do I think this does make some sense but I do think that Madrid are possibly aware that things change very quickly in football. Mbappe may not want to sign a new contract now but he may find that playing in Paris with Messi is actually quite good fun and that PSG are progressing well in the CL. In this scenario he may well think that another 4 year deal makes sense, he'll only be 26 when it ends and he can likely look to agitate again in the third year. Madrid will most likely still be interested in him at 25/26 and therefore the risk he won't get his Madrid move eventually is low. I think Madrid still feel like this is a possibility and if that does happen, they won't have more leverage with PSG than they do right now with him refusing to sign a new contract and it ending in a year. I can see why they were happy to make a big bid. I doubt it hurts that this shows Mbappe that they're very much interested if the bid is declined.

Griezmann back to Athletico for €40m. Mad.

Been really impressed by West Ham in this window, save for not getting in a top striker.
Moyes apparently has full control over transfers and I think it shows, they've brought in quality and not paid over the odds for any of their incomings.

Griezmann back to Athletico for €40m. Mad. Teased with getting Cavani, instead they lose Greizmann and pick up Luke de Jong. Shambles club.

Saul to Chelsea for €5m with a €40m option seems like great business too.
Both Chelsea and City look incredibly strong this season. Liverpool have started well and United now have Varane, Sancho and Ronaldo.
Tough league this year.

I might just be getting caught up in the hype but I think with Ronaldo up top United are going to do it this year.

I still think Chelsea have the best setup, and can't write off City, but United should be fighting for it and Liverpool look good as long as they don't have any injuries. There's a genuine top four battling it out this year though.

Aurier’s contract terminated by mutual consent. Bit of a liability but seemed a decent guy. Hope he finds another club.

I know they’re in a worse position than Inter or Real Madrid but those two did the business they needed pretty efficiently, Barca just seemed to handle every decision as shitly as possible

Hope Edouard does well at Palace. Think he's definitely got the quality to succeed in the Prem. Sad to lose him, but was definitely time for him to go.

There's a genuine top four battling it out this year though. I can’t remember the last time when I could genuinely see three teams winning it (Liverpool, Chelsea, City) with a fourth team in there with an outside shot (United). Good to see a competitive league in the year fans are back. Does make it a little tough to get excited as an Arsenal fan though.

Also it’s crazy that you have to go back to 2008-2009 to find a season where Ronaldo didn’t get 20+ goals.
I know he’s old now so who knows but add 20 goals minimum to any side in the top four and they’ve got to be in with a shout.

Feels pretty weird seeing the media going wild over Ronaldo's return while he still has rape allegations hanging over him.

We appear to be sniffing around Cameron Carter-Vicars from Spurs for a potential loan. Late, late, late. No idea if it will happen … any thoughts on him?

Oooooft, apparently done, just in at the bell. Season long loan with an option to buy.
