I do get the pessimism and if the injuries were long term issues I'd count us out. We're now unlikely to post a better points total this year but the hope is that the bar looks likely to be lower this season.
This is a better squad than the one that went on that winning run last season. They can do it again if enough of them can get and stay fully fit.

This one has really annoyed me. I’m not even sure it’s the style. It’s the levels of performance are so inconsistent. Can only be complacency in games like this We are so inconsistent but that’s nothing new. Werner shouldn’t be anywhere near the premier league, even with our injuries. Son is definitely in decline and frankly I’d be looking to tempt Grealish in January. I used to think Bentancur was going to be a legend for us but he hit a wall after that first injury and never ever recovered. Ange really needs to chuck this “only a plan A” bullshit in the bin. Absolutely livid with that. On reflection, perhaps you are right that it really is as simple as the players we have are not quite up to it and there is not much depth to call upon when things are not going according to plan. You mention Bentancur, and I think you are right that he never fully recovered from that injury. It happens to a lot of players who spend that long out. He's still a very good player, but perhaps should be more of a squad player. In my opinion, a commanding CDM should be our top priority. I know they are really hard to find though. Son is a legend, absolutely no doubt, but he's not been on it for some time now. Moments of quality for sure, but the consistent performance levels are not there. We've got a lot of very good young players and I guess we'll just have to be patient while they find their feet and accept that days like yesterday and at Palace will happen.

On paper I agree, but perhaps the mental side has taken a hit? It is no coincidence that the red cards have played somewhat a factor, along with the injuries. It is up to Arteta to put the work in and get them back to that intensity, that we know they can do.

A very fair outlook this morning Rob, but for me losing yesterday like that was totally unacceptable - we had the chance to go fourth (on goal difference) and start to cement ourselves a bit more in the challenge for top 4. Yes we'll have games like the Palace one, but again we suffer so much against teams playing low block or stuffing the midfield, Ange needs a Plan B he has to be more flexible. Look at Brighton, they made tactical tweaks and took the win against City, Ange doesn't do that he just changes players and hopes the only plan he has works. It's driving me crazy. I know we're in the early(ish) stages of the project, and I want him to have enough time, BUT, we need to look like we have a fucking clue what we're doing in games like these.

mikeckCan't really disagree with that. I found yesterday quite hard to take as well, definitely more so than the Palace one. I think Ange has made tactical tweaks that have been effective, but it seems when we are having a real off day, he seems to struggle to get them going. Which is very odd, especially at home.

I think the poor performances are only exaggerated by us looking so good and everything clicking one game and then flat the next. I don’t think it can be understated how important VDV is for us either.
We’ve had a huge squad overhaul in a short space of time but are still missing the ‘right’ player in a couple positions, most obviously a defensive midfielder. Bentancur has been decent but sometimes looks like a player doing a job, Bissouma is so hot and cold it’s ridiculous.
As frustrating as games like yesterday are, I’d still rather this than the turgid performances under Mourinho and Conte. At least we have a chance to be fun to watch. Ange still needs time and a little perspective from our fan base is needed.

Yeah agree with that. I think we are moving in the right direction and we'd be mad to be thinking about starting again right now.

Do you know, our own Frog always tells us off for bitching about players but he’s probably right, particularly with the youngsters, who live online and on social media. You know Garnacho needed that and got more from it than the kid. Beautiful stuff. Mrs was tracking Amorim’s inbound flight earlier 😂

Mrs was tracking Amorim’s inbound flight earlier 😂 Dunno if you saw the match, or MOTD2 last night, but Garnacho scored a cracker and then basically didn't celebrate and it was raised that a young player that good not celebrating after scoring a goal like that shows how the mood has been at United. Mr Amorim has a lot of work to do.

That's not quite what was going on.
My thoughts at the time of the game, which were later pretty much confirmed by Bruno's interview were that he's far too fucking online for his own good and took some criticism from cloud cuckoo land (social media) to heart. There was video of one particularly odious prick giving him stick before the Paok game - whilst that was in person it was a youtube cunt so pure pricks about clicks shite.
Thankfully it sounded like his team mates set him straight. Andy Mitten on talk of the devils was exceptionally adamant that those close to him have set him right on it and Andy knows his stuff with United and he knows the Garnacho family.
I think that particular one is mostly a symptom of "20 year old kid being warped by social media" than it is about how much United are a shambles.

Oh, cool. Everything's been peachy for the last three months then. Must've just been me. Coote's been suspended. Guess Liverpool can expect some VAR overturns in the coming weeks.

Thought David Coote came out of that quite well!
Clearly a sackable offence, but I would love to know the context for why he felt 'safe' speaking so openly on camera. He must have really trusted those he was with. From the thumbnail I was expecting him to be drunk, but he seems sober.

The problem with this video is that you then suspect, that it is really just an old boys club, where they all sit around taking the piss out of the teams, for decisions they didn't give or whatever.

mikew1985Yep, this was my take exactly and fully aware of the lack of celebration and of that pre-PAOK moment. It just shows you, rightly or wrongly, that some of these players are there seeing the stuff and why we probably ought to be kinder at times. Although I don’t think it likely Alejandro Garnacho or who ever the equivalent at your club of choice is reading fontgeek.io, but some of the stuff on Reddit and Facebook which is about the extent of my social media (I don’t count this place) is really very toxic - not always deliberately, sometimes it’s just airing frustration but unlike in ye olde days when it would be done in pubs and stuff there’s a real time written record of it now, and half the squad are basing their sense of self worth on the vocal minority of some Redditors or worse Tok Tokkerers. A sad world but it’s the one we’ve got.

The problem with this video is that you then suspect, that it is really just an old boys club, where they all sit around taking the piss out of the teams, for decisions they didn't give or whatever. The fact that they all white dudes and the majority were born and live in a corner of the country doesn't help that suspicion. I'm prepared to believe that there is no conscious bias amongst the refs (in terms of doing their best to be fair) but unconscious bias is bound to be present. If you grow up in our football culture, I don't see how anyone could avoid forming them. The map of refs is in this article: www.givemesport.com/where-are-all-the-premier-league-referees-from/Would make a ton of sense to import referees who won't have any domestic football baggage. Our refs are pioneering this with their valuable work in the Saudi league, it's just that we've only Jared Gillet come the other way and even he now lives in the North West!
