Lot of money for what's considered a backup striker. He's good but £85m good? City prob keen to balance the books a little

They sent him over with a block of gold as a gift worth 40 million.

85m for Alvarez is absolute lunacy. It makes no sense in any case. He's not been particularly good, he's never been a consistent starter and after Felix it doesn't seem to make any sense for Atletico.
I am extremely suspicious of this one, seems completely over inflated in the current market.

Given the fees paid for Nunez and Hojlund, neither of whom had achieved what Alvarez has, it doesn’t strike me as being that wild.

Great player and makes sense for Athletico who want someone to replace Morata. It's just when you hear how much he went for you just think it seems a bit much!

Fair point comparing to Hoijland and Nunes.

mikew1985If you think the Alvarez fee is lunacy, you should hear how much Man Utd paid for Antony...

50m which is still too much. The rest of the money would be dependant on a set of things which won't ever happen and if they did he would suddenly be worth the fee!
Or so I've read recently but can't remember for the life of me where it was.

And Gallagher supposedly for 40m.
Budget Scott McTominay going for that makes zero sense

The Antony fee was crazy but nothing fishy about it other than clueless people running United. The Alvarez deal stinks to high heaven at the numbers mentioned particularly coupled with Gallagher also going there. Very off

What about Andy Carroll at Newcastle. YEAH. In todays money that's... 300 billion pounds.

Anyone on the lookout for discounted NowTv sports subscriptions? I've seen they're doing £26 a month atm, but I've had cheaper before.

My current Virgin stream package with Sky Sports for £18.95 per month expires in October, I'll be looking then.

Solanke to Spurs chatter is picking up. Would assume that means Richarlison is off to Saudi

I dunno, I reckon there is room for both as we potentially have a lot of games to play this year. Unless Ange is looking to use some of the youngsters as back up.
Veliz is going off on loan so that’s another striker down.

Sounds like we’ve got the opportunity to recoup the cash we spent on Richarlison, if that’s the case I can’t see it being turned down. A shame as I think he’s done a great job when fit and his energy in the press is super important.
Son can play through the middle and maybe they will give Lankshear some minutes.

Yeah I guess getting our money back on Richarlison is too good to turn down, but I'm not sure a straight replacement with Solanke is a massive step forward in terms of quality. If we had both as options and cover for injuries / resting that would be ideal. Son is so much more effective on the left.
Unless, like you say, Ange thinks some of the youngsters are ready to step up. If so, I'm all for that.

The whole Saudi hook up is mad. Can only assume having a good relationship with key agents is what greases the wheels.

I don't think it's to with agents, I think it's to do with soft power.
Apparently Newcastle won't do business with Arsenal because the club has been most proactively opposing state ownership in PL meetings (Miguel Delaney in the Independent). I'd be amazed if we ever sell anyone for significant money to any of the Saudi clubs despite the fact that these entities are of course totally unrelated.

it's pretty clear the PL is polarising between the US owners and the oil states. The former are looking to turn the league into a cash cow, the latter sportwashing.

Good points well made. Neither of those options are terribly appealing tbh. But if I was to choose, it would be the former.

Zubimendi is the midfielder Liverpool want then. I reckon they'll get him, not like they need to do much else.

I'd be very surprised if Arsenal didn't also bid for Zubimendi given that we've supposedly been tracking him for two years and have good relationship with Sociedad. I didn't think he was available this summer, but let's see.
I guess that would mean we could assemble the entire Sociedad midfield of a couple of season ago (Zubi, Merino, Odegaard)!

I'm clearly in the minority, but I think that Alvarez deal is good for both parties. He's scored a small bucket full of goals playing second fiddle to Haaland. He's won a World Cup. I think he's a class act and fully expect him to hit 30+ goals in La Liga.

I know it's a friendly but giving Leverkusen a 4-1 spanking feels kind of nice.

Some tasty goals in that game too.
I hope Spurs get off to a really good start and Kal comes back. Then Arsenal win the league.
