Anyone into shmups and have some recommendations? This genre had totally passed me by, but now I've become somewhat obsessed with them. Just perfect for a quick go now and again when your gaming time is limited. Some good games I've found to start with:
Danmaku Unlimited 3. Very stylish and cool bullet patterns. Screen shots makes it look bland, but it is very satisfying to play, with multiple difficulties. I guess this qualifies as a "bullet hell" type of shooter. Metal music is not my jam, so I have muted the music and play some synthwave instead.
ZerOranger. Very pretty artwork with cool mechanics and fun levels. Later levels really twist the formula. A bit more traditional, atleast to start with.
Drainius. Stupid name but fun to play. A bit more involved, with upgrades in the Gradius vein. Also an attempt at an actual story, which isnt too bad actually.
Also, Capcom Arcade Stadium is worth checking out for some cheaper classics like the 19xx-series and Progear.

Ikaruga
Simple mechanic beautifully executed. EPIC soundtrack. One of my Games Of All Time
Radiant Silvergun
Another Treasure title. Much harder to find outside of emulators and more complex. Absolutely brilliant.
Hellsinker
Just try it. And then try it again. And again. I still don't get it.
Bangai-O
Love it. Well, loved it, I haven't played it in about 12 years.

Compile's whole Aleste series. Musha's the most popular, but I have a fondness for Super Aleste myself. Robo Aleste is great too.
Gaiares, Zero Wing, Thunder Force, Gleylancer, Macross Scrambled Valkyrie and R-Type are excellent horizontal shooters.
And actually, if you want the best bang for your buck, import a PC Engine Mini from Amazon Japan and explore all the Compile and Hudson stuff on there.

Radiant silver gun is on the Xbox store👍 omg FUCK you Sony TBF it's the old 360 port through backwards compatibility. Back when Japanese developers wanted to make the 360 the otaku console, it got a lot of JRPGs, shoot em ups and visual novels. When Japanese gamers mostly ignored the console, the majority of it got ported to PS3. Except for the Treasure stuff, whom remained loyal for some reason. still worth checking out, and it's really cheap. But just saying, it's not a new port that got Xboxed over PS4/5. also Treasure but not shoot em up, worth picking up Guardian Heroes on 360 XBLA. and Gunstar Heroes, but that's available in any amount of Mega Drive collections.

Get Eschatos! Stunning shmup.
As for the rest, I have come to realise there are SO many good shmups. It is absolutely a rabbit hole you can get completely lost in as there are genres within this one genre. Perhaps try one shmup from each developer to see where your taste lies:
Konami: Gradius II or Sexy Parodius Irem: R-Type or R-Type Delta (or Leo?) Taito: Darius Gaiden or G Darius Compile: Blazing Lazers or MUSHA Aleste Toaplan: Outzone or Truxton Tecnosoft: Thunder Force III, AC or IV Cave: Ketsui or EspRaDe Raizing: Battle Garegga or Armed Police Batrider Qute: Eschatos Treasure: Gradius V or (ugh) Ikaruga NMK: Thunder Dragon 2 Capcom: 1941 Counter Attack or 19XX Takumi: GigaWing Psikyo: Strikers 1945 or Dragon Blaze Plenty other good shmups developers out there too, mostly Japanese on the whole mind.
Also, for newer retro games: GG Aleste 3, Andro Dumos 2 and Cotton Fantasy are all great.

Oh, for owners of R-Type Final 2, there has just been a free update that adds two new levels and three new ships along with some other improvements.
Stage 5.1 is accessible from stage 4.0 (collect the purple orb)
Stage R1.0 is accessible from the main menu and acts as a one-life long challenge level (like F.C in the previous game)

No mention of Crimson Clover?
Come on now. Also look at Battle Traverse.
Almost all of Cave with a couple of exceptions are the cream of the crop though. Nothing really quite compares. The SDOJ arcade rom is easy to get a hold of these days, so that's worth getting into.

For horizontals I enjoy the first DeathSmiles, it is also pretty beginner friendly with varying difficulties within the game. Not sure if the Xbox 360 one is on the BC list of XBS systems though. It has been released on Switch and is on PC though. The sequel is less good with an ugly polygonny art style.

Awesome recommendations, my wish list is bulging! Will probably get me an arcade stick as well. I suspect it is easier to play these games with a regular pad, though.

I'm quite partial to Sine Mora which can be purchased quite cheap on Xbox or PS store. Great graphics and bosses with a cool time slow gimmick.
Also Raiden V is free on PS essential, its proper hardcore though

R-Type Final 2 is also "free" on PS Essential. Embarrassingly enough it was the handful of shooters on it that I'd almost bought on XB or PC that convinced me to stump up for the sub, rather than all the exclusives on there.

Yeah I picked it up too, seems really good but I keep on getting killed on the first boss and gave up. My old man skills are not made for Shmups anymore! Need to get back to it though

Daft question: is R-Type Final 3 Evolved a *sequel* to R-Type Final 2, or a *reissue* of the latter with additional content?

Re-issue. Final 2 became 3 on every previous platform, but since there wasn’t a native PS5 port previously (stuck at 1080p with the PS4 version), it gets some exclusivel levels.

No problem.
On a related note, picked up Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles on PSN as the bundle is on sale at the moment. Looking forward to dive into them.

Ginga force is a weird one, avoiding objects (as perspective shifts) is really trial and error in a bad way. Love the style and general gameplay loop though. Leveling is not as bad as some comments say online. Natsuki chronicle is great, I shoumd give it more time really.

Heads up, Shmuppers, Cygni is getting decent enough reviews and it's free until the 15th on the Epic Games store. The RRP is £25 for Steam, PS5, Series X|S which isn't bad in itself, but free is the best price of all.

My favourite Cave game - wonder why they are delisting it?
