The time is upon us here in NZ. Chronic sneezing, jaw pain, itchy eyes and brain fog all day. Gah!

I'm on cetirizine-based antihistamines, but I think they need a couple of days to build up in my system.

I made the mistake of taking the wrong antihistamine (cetirizine instead or loratadine) for days earlier this year, couldn't work out why I couldn't function (brain fog, fatigue etc). I've been managing hayfever for years, bloody rookie error.
Probably also didn't help that I had not taken anything for a while so usually I might double-dose if especially bad just to get a head-start (I know, what a plonker, but it usually works for me), so a double dose of cetirizine was not very helpful at all)!

I'm on cetirizine-based antihistamines, but I think they need a couple of days to build up in my system. Cetirizine is pretty good but as you say needs to be built up for a few days. I used to take that and Beconase together and that's a pretty good combo if you only get seasonal hayfever. But I have year round allergies and Fexofenadine tablets and Fluticasone spray make me feel pretty close to a normal human being. It's quite funny seeing people sneezing during summer now, while I'm not feeling anything. I ran out a few weeks back and had to wait a few days for my prescription and it reminded me how bad it used to be.

You should try wearing a mask.

You should try wearing a mask. Is that what you said to Ben before he disappeared?

Mine’s not started yet. Usually May-July for me.
Weirdly, having suffered nastily with it since being a child, I became “cured” for a few blesséd years by trying the heavily-discredited “stick this red light up your nose” technique, but it’s come back to bite me over the last few years.

I get it hard in April then it's back in spades for July and August. Mine is so ingrained about ten years ago I developed oral allergy syndrome as well which is basically food hayfever mainly from indigenous fruit. Really fun.
BBC weather app has the pollen count round here as "very high" for the whole bank holiday. Again, really fun. Walking round with eyes redder than Bob Marley.

So I seem to have spontaneously developed hayfever.

Baconnaise.
No, wait. The other one.
I never got hayfever until I stopped smoking. I'm not advocating smoking as a solution to anything, but you know.

Heh! Having put my "not sure if we brought the thread over" comment in the Shoutbox, it now seems clear that I am so befuddled I had already contributed to said thread! Anyway, for the last two or three days, it's been an absolute twat. I didn't sleep at all last night, and I literally feel like I have someone twisting knives up my nostrils, as well as the usual red mist and headache. Huzzah!

Just seemed to happen. Was walking along, got a big whiff of flowers and whatnot and suddenly I'm being stabbed in the eyes with a thousand needles and couldn't keep them open. The tears streaming down my face matched only by the sudden flow dripping from the end of my nose. Fortunately our daughter has a cat allergy so we keep some antihistamines in for when she visits.

Yeah this affliction is off the charts this week and definitely affecting my quality of life. Eyes are absolutely fucked, were pretty much glued shut this morning.

I love my year round medication. Now I only find out about hay-fever from other people telling me how bad theirs is.

I switched to Allevia last year and it has worked better than any other non-prescription tablets / nasal spray that I've tried.
I still get some symptoms but it is miles better than it used to be.

I've been using cetirizine for a while, which works pretty well... so, like the idiot I am, I recently bought a pack of loratadine "in case it's better."
It isn't.

Yeah it's good that fexofenadine (alevia) is now available off the shelf but the strength of that is only 120mg. The one I get on prescription is 180mg, and a refill is 60 tablets. It's definitely the best thing I've had.

Yeah I mentioned it in the general health thread, I've never suffered with hay fever in my life until this year when it's floored me from out of nowhere. Absolutely bonkers, it sucks hard.

Yep bastard high pollen this week. Rocking those dodgy Bob Marley eyes to work.
But after 30 years of taking Zirtek/Piritize etc I've just this week discovered Allevia... 120mg compared to the 10mg of the others and so so much more effective with no drowsyness.
Fexofenadine FTW!
