Down with this sort of thing!
On another note: not sure if I'll cave for the earlier access. I'm still like a bloody kid when the hype starts, mind, so if the reviews are stellar ... Twisting Blades Rogue is looking so tasty atm

Lord. Imagine spending your own money on something you enjoy. 🙄 Yes I do spend my money on things that I enjoy, it's my opinion that it's a shitty practice done by publishers to do stuff like this, along with other predatory practices that are systematically ruining the industry.

Payed content I can see the argument for being bad and whatever, but payed early access is pretty standard, mostly by any game that charges before it's v.1, of which there are many. This is a finished product and you can choose to do it or ignore it, and it has no bearing on anyone else. It's nothing to do with playing it before anyone else really, and everyone has the option, it's a case of choosing to pay for a thing that you want when you have time to play it.
ed: I've no idea if I'm going to buy it yet. I've not played it nor closely followed it, but I'll look at reviews later as I like Diablo generally. If I do buy it I'll get the early access version though, because I have a 4 day weekend from Saturday due to a public holiday and a squeeze day, so I can pay to actually play it for 4 days when I have adequate time out of the gate, or pick it up later and fit in the odd hours here and there as is the norm.

You can Mr.Logic it all you want, it's still a shitty practice. Also GTFO with "it's nothing to do with playing it before anyone else".

Is it only a shitty practice when it's a large publisher?
Well it's hardly cool to play before anyone else when everyone has the option of doing it, and you're paying to unlock the option. I guess some could see it that way, but I'd argue that for the majority it's just a case of having the thing they want as soon as possible.

Predominantly large publishers are the ones offering early access for "finished" products and yes, to repeat myself again, it's a shitty practice to sell your finished product at a inflated price to play something a few days earlier. It's even shittier when large publishers are releasing products that are in such a dire technical state more and more these days, a state that some would even call unplayable and have absolutely no shame in offering early access.

Isn't there a 'race' event setup for the first 100 hardcore players to complete the game or get to a specific level and take a pic and they'll be immortalised on some statue.
Guess if you start 4 days after everybody else you're SOL!

It's a shitty practice for sure. I also couldn't possibly care less. The Deluxe edition is pre-ordered, can't wait for Friday. Wouldn't do that for a lot of games, but it's Diablo, and the Betas were fantastic.
/definitely part of the problem

I'm trying to decide if I actually like Diablo. Been playing since the demo of the first one (that took you to up the Butcher) and have ploughed countless hours into 1,2,3 and the remaster of 2. But... I just don't know if it's more of a stat analysing, box ticking, map completing excercise as opposed to an actual game that I have fun with. Every bit of gameplay I've seen of this just makes me think it's more of what I've already (I think) become bored with.

For me with D3 the fun was the difficulty scaling, setting up the build and gear that carves through a new higher level like butter while i zone out on the lizard brain pleasures of everything exploding in blood clouds and loot pinatas popping. Didn't really think about stats that deeply, compared with something like Destiny 2 for example.
Anyway, the preload is available today if you did preorder.

I really liked D3 - it's the only one I've played all the way through. I'm pretty sure I'll like D4 but I haven't really been following it. I think I just expected to buy it but I'm actually a bit torn atm. I'm getting the itch, watching some footage and checking out some reviews, but at the same time I really don't need another game to sink hours and hours into right now.

Yeah, I absolutely love that sudden shift in D3 when you're just about carving your way through a certain difficulty, then you get a drop that makes you melt through mobs. Difficulty gets cranked up again and the chase for that hit continues. Probably why I enjoy coming back for seasons, but then drift away from it around the point where you start getting primal drops.
I need to have a fiddle with my steam deck and get that ready for action... Already have a Windows install that I could potentially use, but I might as well try to get it running under SteamOS too.

gamecat Thanks for linking this video. Basically almost all of the decisions they seem to have made relating to gameplay are exactly opposite to what I like, so I can now safely skip this game.

I'm all in on this one. Bought the (entirely superfluous) Ultimate Edition via CDKeys (bite me, I don't care) and it's pre-loading to the Series X right now. I can see me also double or triple dipping down the road to get it on PC and PS5 when there's a sale on just so I CAN PLAY IN ANY ROOM IN THE HOUSE. Just need to find something to kill the hours between now and Friday AM. Boltgun should fit the bill!

Also: that video linked about said the campaign was about 20 hours, but I'm pretty sure I put double digit hours into the open beta "stress test" earlier this year and only really rinsed the opening region so that's going to be easily double that at my pace and completionist tendencies.

I'm not sure how I feel about it at the moment. I liked the early beta but I want to see how the 'pay for shit' situation is before I jump in. I'm also in the same boat as Derbs above, I don't need another game to sink hours into right now as I have 2 on the go already fighting for my attention (Tarkov & Zelda in a distant 2nd).

Game Star have kind of partial review up and the gist of it so far, is, that they mostly liked it, but
- still some balance issues - shared world can pull you out of the experience - the open world can lead to some less compelling areas - wasn't a big point, but it's a live service game
They still were mostly positive though.

The Gamestar review says 15 hours if you *only* follow the main story, but you will run into trouble because you're underleveled at some point. It was still doable on the lowest difficulty. 50 hours if you do *everything*, so we're on a sliding scale between 15 and 50 hours somewhere for one playthrough.

That sounds about right, aye. I’m getting properly hyped. Might even try to get into the battle pass nonsense to see if I have enough game time to even make a dent in one. Destiny on PS4 was the last game I tried to really keep on top of, so I’m intrigued to see if I have it in me.

It's just the FOMO isn't it. It'll take weeks or possibly months for all the niggles to get ironed out. Once it's out, there's no rush to play it. I'm going to hammer this backlog for a bit first. Two billion games on the go at once mean there's not a chance I have time for this.
That said, I'd drop my pants tomorrow if they released this new System Shock on consoles, so it depends how hyped you are for any given game I guess.

I'll be getting it, but also in no rush. Currently playing Diablo 2 with a mate, so will likely finish that off first. Also want to miss out on all the likely server issues that I'm sure will be prevalent in the first week or two.
The System Shock remaster is also on my list.
