U jk but EG is actually a pretty good example of what I'm talking. A solid enthusiast site that I visited every day, sold to a multi-media conglomerate and I only visit there now if someone links to an article on how its on the edge of folding or something.

Though it does have a pretty slick UI. Does Bluesky have verified accounts? (as in proper ones, not just paid for ones) Yes, the way it verifies accounts is great, if a bit technical - you essentially use your own web domain as your handle by tweaking your DNS records. So on Bluesky I'm @ottocr.at bsky.social/about/blog/4-28-2023-domain-handle-tutorial

In this way, it's similar to how Mastodon handles verification, and makes loads more sense - it's not about some moderator making arbitrary subjective decisions as to whether your account is real and is worthy of recognition - it's a straightforward way of proving that you are who you claim to be.

So on Bluesky I'm @ottocr.at This might explain why I couldn't find an official looking Taylor Swift account. She needs to tweak her DNS record (Taylor's Version)!

The issues with social media are basically the issues with the internet in general.
Everything is commodified. Most of all the users.
And it's only going to get more commodified.

I think there will be cycles. Like Pitchfork. People still want that kind of content, I think, its just not very profitable after acquisitions and mergers. Someone will basically reinvent pitchfork with love and dedication, organically grow the audience, have it acquired, the aquirer will ruin it and shutter the operation, someone will start a music review site, it will grow organically....
There is only so far you can take the homogenisation before people stop giving a fuck.

Just don't go on Tw@tter? If a platform you are on is doing nothing to stop the hate speech, stop using the hate spreading, shit stirring Bile Titan platform. Is it really that hard to just leave it? Do you really need to be on X to make your life meaningful?
Obviously X should be doing more about it but its track record is hardly glowing.

I can only speak for myself, but I for one don't actually use it (I had an account on it basically just for some other game's account recovery and being able to view tweet replies, got logged out of it at some point and couldn't be arsed to log back in)
The problem with quitting it entirely is, as I've mentioned a few times, that a great amount of things I want to stay updated on (art, game announcements etc) is either still only on Twitter or conveniently gathers on Twitter, to the point where even if I, I dunno, wanted to look at leaks for upcoming content for X game on another website, a subreddit or something, more often than not there'd be Twitter links anyway. Unfortunately, until and unless its alternatives gain enough traction or everyone decides to collectively jump ship, there is no other way...

Can you not just Google(other search engines available)the things you are interested in? Surely whatever is linked on X will take you to a website?

I haven't been on Twitter *at all* in over a year. Not even when work wants me to. Absolutely not giving that place my patronage, full stop. So there is another way. I get that it's not a way that everyone will choose to take, even if they dislike what's happening to the place, because reasons. But there is another way.

The problem is that lots of websites just embed stuff from Twitter. For example, here, the bbc, etc.. And if it's more than a few lines then you have to click on it and go to twitter to see the full thing.
On the plus side, since i'm not signed in, I can't see any of the hateful replies that are probably under it.
On the minus side, when people do that infuruating thing of telling a story across 27 tweets, instead of just writing it somewhere where they could write the whole thing, I can only see the first one. (or maybe that's a plus)
But I maintain that if journalists would stop using it so much, or relying on it so much to create their stories, I could probably ignore it entirely.

Not if what I'm looking for happens to only be on Twitter though, which happens more often than you'd think (or that I'd like, for that matter, it's not like I enjoy giving Muskrat clicks). Even with art, while it's not all of it, a good amount of the search results are on there...

I'll admit it is just something I've never been interested in.
Maybe due to age but I remember in an elevator(I was in the US) and two guys were laughing at one of his tweets to someone and the other guy retweeted his friends tweet and they were giggling away like they just owned the world.
I just rolled my eyes thinking what the actual fuck is the world coming to.

I've not had Facebook for 10+ years and never had a Twitter account.
I don't feel like I've missed out on any content (that I can't get from various other sites) and can still click on the odd video/image despite not having an account.
Are there really things produced on twitter that people can't find anywhere else? This may be my own limited knowledge but I thought (like Facebook) twitter just sourced content from other places via web links, video embeds etc?

The flip side to that is I was in the chip shop the other day and an old man was complaining about phones being used for everything, even NHS. "I haven't got a mobile but I've got something better - a life".
Couldn't help myself. Proper cut him to shreds. Explained how using the online booking system for my GP and accepting a video appointment I could take it at work, get diagnosed and have my follow up with specialist booked 2 weeks after my initial inquiry.
Then he said "well obviously I've got an old Nokia"

Apparently, the latest made up thing that the Tesla Roadster will do is 0-60 in 'less than one second' which puts it at pulling around 3G, the start of the threshold where fighter pilots start losing their vision.

I'm sure regular tyres will provide the grip required to launch it that quickly.

I'm equally sure such a vehicle would pass the NCAP safety rating procedure...
