Proboards doesn't embed Bluesky but the link should work okay, Elmo being made to look stupid is always worth a click.
Bugger, appears to require being logged in, the images should embed though.

Which dies first - Grok (which constantly shows its owner to be a twat) or Community Notes (which constantly shows Elmo is a twat)?

If proboards would let us embed Bluesky or Masta/odon posts we could all dump Twitter for good.

I think it’s safe to dump Twitter anyway.

Someone should tell that to all the news organisations I follow on it as the stories break on there a fuckton faster than anywhere else.

It’s easy to break news quickly when you don’t have to bother fact checking

Who would have thought that writing one sentence would be quicker than writing many.

It’s easy to break news quickly when you don’t have to bother fact checking Yeah I'm sure people like the BBC, Reuters, Sky News, all the newspapers etc are all tweeting any old rubbish without any attempt at making sure it's even slightly accurate.
I know some people on here think Twitter is just full of Nazis and other undesirables but it isn't and it's quite easy to avoid the increasingly shitty side of the site if you try.
If you don't want to use it, don't but some of the holier than thou stuff on here about those who still do is tedious.

Even if they do break news quicker, do you need to know it that quickly? What would happen if you only found out the next morning?
I get it’s nice to find out stuff quickly but ultimately it is just noise, usually without the detail to make it mean more than a headline.
Maybe you enjoy it and get something from it, it’s still safe to dump it though.

It's more that all the people complaining about Twitter seem to do so on Twitter.
And that the only exposure I have to Twitter is through Embeds on here, or on places like BBC. If they'd start using other services and embedding them, I'd never see Twitter at all.

I thought you were meaning the speed at which general news breaks on the platform rather than how quickly eg the BBC tweet the headline vs how quickly they publish on their website - in which case yes, it’s quicker to type a paragraph and hit tweet than it will ever be to type and article, source a relevant photo, check with the editor that it’s publishable and then upload to the host server

I've never had a twitter account so I'm allowed to whinge about it as much as I want. I just don't want to.

I have a Twitter account that I'd intended as a gimmick thing. It was going to be "one tweet wonder", in that I'd post a single enigmatic tweet, log out and never comment or elaborate on it ever. Like that "sex gifs" thing that the Breaking Bad guy tweeted once, only intentional.
And it would get popular, people would look back on it in years to come, and pronounce me their new God, like this
But yeah, instead of that plan I created an account, logged into it once, then never looked at it again.

The value of BREAKING!! news is oversold. It's often actually *less* useful, by necessity lacking context, critical detail or interpretation. It's also sometimes just plain wrong. The benefit of knowing about something a few hours before the normies helps how? Are you a fund manager looking for time critical geopolitical developments to take a leveraged position on the Yen? No. You're some no-mark with a phone who's hooked on the dopamine rush seeing things go ping on your screen.

Exactly. Also the dopamine rush of being the first one to share said news with other people. I get it, as I used to have that rush for a while, but that's all it is at the end of the day. It doesn't mean anything, you don't have more respect because of it.

I actively avoid breaking news. There's little chance I'll be able to help, and it's usually depressing, so I'd rather be ignorant until it filters down.

I'd rather have something like The Week which provides a nice fixed-size overview of the week's events. Unfortunately, their free digital edition has real-time updates, hence defeating the point imho.
The problem is that online news is free, and so it's really hard to bring myself to pay 152 pounds a year for news.

Dunno what it's like where you are, but I have access to lots of magazine print editions online via my local library and the PressReader app, including The Week (and loads of others The Economist, Newsweek, and er.... EDGE and New Scientist via Libby). All for free. It's so amazing I genuinely struggle to believe it's a thing

They have print mags in the library itself, but no e-book type things.
Which was particularly ironic for about the last 6 years since Rakuten bought Overdrive. But I think they sold it off recently.
I really wish I still had my UK library card!

Pretty sure there was live tv coverage of that one, still didn’t need Twitter with some member of the public to tweet about it.
We were all ok in the 80s and 90s without instant reporting when the IRA were doing their thing. Is it better now to know instantly?
