Fair point, I forgot that the smith in Nioh 2 also only sold basic gear. We are not all missing a hidden sub-sub-sub-menu in Nioh 2 and Wo Long where you can turn 1-star gear into something better do, we? I mean, at least Nioh 2 is so convoluted and full of mechanics, I wouldn't be surprised...

Re spec to a almost pure water and metal build. Holy crap it's op when you hit the higher fortitude levels. I can just slow and poison and de buff everything to death.

Resistances seem to matter a lot more at higher levels, so respeccing is probably going to be mandatory in NG+. I was doing 0 damage to a lot of bosses by the end of NG and I imagine that will just get worse so the game will start to get more and more tactical, I suppose.
The big slow turtle tentacle monster with the shield took no damage from ice rain when I got to him (but it did do Qi damage so I eventually wore him down).

Fwiw, traveling away from a map and back does *not* seem to work in NG+. I was rather unceremoniously dumped back at the start when I tried that yesterday, which makes situational respeccing a lot more difficult.

Turns out my new wizard build is great for helping the little one in co op. He is fire build and goes in and I can hang back and chill, poison and slow the targets. Works a charm on the bosses as well.

After cruising through bosses and sub-missions since Lu Bu, I've hit a bit of a roadblock with Zhang Liao in The Way of the Warrior. He keeps catching me with his massive lightning attacks.
Apart from gittin gud, any tips? I did respect to Metal, putting poison on my sword etc. but I'm not sure how much it's helping.

Probably treats every map as cleared, even when it's your first time in the new difficulty.

I guess, in this situation, creating/saving some differently-specced battle sets could be the answer, since they can be selected at the battle flags, even though intentional re-speccing would certainly be preferable.

The main thing is the resistance so you can take the attacks - get yourself some armour which can take it from another general. Guan Yu is a solid choice. Once I was no longer getting one shotted for blocking an attack instead of deflecting it, the whole thing became a lot easier.

Will need to do a bit of grinding with Guan Yu first then.

That’s what I had right at the end when I started messing about with builds. It’s only really viable with all max gear but I had a fire, water and metal set at the end (didn’t have the mats for an earth weapon).

Easily beat him first time as - no surprise - his lightning attacks did relatively little damage, essentially neutralising him as a boss.

A couple of days ago I said I am relieved I saw the credits roll, but can I keep my hands off the game? Bloody can't. I continued with Ishin, which is great in its own way, but the combat just cannot compare.
Trying a build now in NG+ where I spread all points evenly across all phases (except earth, where I have a bit more because I use heavy armour), and it works surprisingly well.

I did notice that, thanks to split stats, you don’t lose a massive amount of damage from your weapon if you change focus or spread your stats but it does effect how you want to play a bit.
On my fire build I can just spam martial arts pretty much constantly because, with the help of some gear enchantments, the stat reduces the cost so much. That said, it’s not quite as pronounced for earth. Casting cost reduction seems to have a really hard cap early on.

You probably already have some of those cups which increase your bond with a general and he should already be up a few levels anyway, shouldn't take long. One thing is that his armour is heavy so you might need to put a few points into earth.

... and if you haven't maxed your bond with Guan Yu (or any other general) here's a Cup of Cordiality farming spot, shamelessly stolen from JuniorFE's post:

Some additional notes there, since it's been brought up again:
The house next to the cave entrance has a chest with Rank 3 Leather in it, and if you go to the roof where the Golden Cicada Shell is (jump on some wooden platforms next to the cave) there will be a respawning Sacred Lotus (the Cleanse spell in item form AFAIK) to farm.

I tell you what. See the levels that have all the red glowing shit everywhere... Either my TV settings are fucked, or the game gets ugly as fucking sin at these points. It's so horribly garish.
Still working my way through the second main mission of chapter 6. I'm feeling the burnout I normally get with these games around now. Same with Nioh 1 & 2. The locales never change much from cliffs and caves to ruined temples / villages so it all gets a bit samey after a while. At least Nioh 2 had proper "shit that's cool" moments like the inverted temple or the lovely cherry blossom level. This just seems so... generic.

If youre far enough into the game, there is a sub-mission on Stage 5 where you can get a Cup in about 30 seconds. You have to find a guy in the sewer and you can pretty much run straight to him and ignore the enemies every time.
I did it thrice to level up Magnificent Beard.

One thing is that his armour is heavy so you might need to put a few points into earth. I'd already used up my cups and couldn't be arsed farming them, easy or not, hence the solution I mentioned above: boosting the lightning defence in my existing armour. It worked a treat but is not something you can do repeatedly. It wiped out half my funds.

Aaaannndd....I've just trounced demon Lu Bu in that part 5 mission. Knowing he was weak to it, I respeced to water (50), blocked some criticals and spammed him with ominous chill.
Was it skilful? Nope.
Was it satisfying watching his health bar absolutely melt? Yes. Yes it was.

I honestly think it was easier for him being turned up a notch as his red moves have massive windups and are some of the most easily parryable in the game.

Oh my. Hong Jing in The Scarlet Crystal is a bit challenging. Going to have to think about a strategy here. I don't know what anyone thinks but I suspect build is less important than just finding ways to get close and wail on her before she casts spells?
