Slightly daft pathing issue with the ARC on mission 2, cleared the way for it to advance not realising I had a sentry gun setup where it wanted to go and the car bumps it and breaks it. Repair and pickup using up a precious welder and the sarge doesn't even apologise, should have gone to Specsavers mate.

Am balancing this against Boltgun and now Diablo 4, so some stiff competition, but I keep coming back and remaining very impressed. Into the third mission now, anybody much further?
It reminded me I never got the Prometheus-esque DLC for Fireteams Elite so that might be back on the radar, looks great.

I'm curious where people have played up to, it says I'm 30% of the way through the main story at a mission now where I have to defend the ship... and I'm thinking of packing it in. Multiple attempts at it and it just all goes wrong everytime. It's the fact that it forces you into a situation where you can't rest to have your best soldiers available. It's the fact that setting the angle of the suppressing fire doesn't go where I want it to, nor can I set it after the fact, I have to use another command point to change it. It's that sometimes the aliens will even just jump to the side and get arund your suppressing fire, allowing them to flank you. But most of all and the biggest criminal of them all, there's no checkpoints in this mission. If you fail, you gotta restart. First 20 mins of the mission is fine but then hits this insane spike where you gotta move to points on the map as you're being ambushed. Aliens come and get close enough sometimes they'll start dragging people away and there's not much you can do once they turn a corner and keep going. The potential to go from great to failure is so fast and I'd be more accepting if there were the ability to manually save or checkpoints but there's not and for a game like this, I really can't stand it.

I’m on the final stretch but haven’t had time to game for a week or so and am going away. Hope to finish when back off holiday but I’m in the high 90s.
I’m not sure what mission you are on sorry so difficult to offer specific advice.
I can offer some general advice that may be a smidge spoilery (in terms of mechanics not story) However I don’t think anyone here cares enough about the game so I will just go for it.
1. Consider starting the game again. I eventually did this and it’s like a different game if you bring in your existing knowledge and add that of others, leading me to 2. Hit the subreddit and get some tips. 3. Concentrate on getting as many marines as possible to level 6, and try and get a bunch to 10. When you get the intensive training upgrade to the barracks this can help. 4. As you are ranking up marines, always try to prioritise class promotions to sergeants, gunners and medics. Make sure you have at least 2 scouts though. If you upgrade them to the silenced sniper skill, it can really help maintain stealth in later levels. Tekkers are an irrelevance because as long as you have a squad member with ‘wiseass’ you can hack doors, and the tekker drone is useless. 5. Prioritise the skills that increase accuracy, dismemberment, kill that bastard bonus (gunners) and command points. 6. If you are attacked, don’t panic, walk backwards from the enemy slowly. Sprinting loses accuracy, this doesn’t. This is the single best way to survive. 7. Use the time slow mechanic and your skills. A lot. Grenade, flame and shotty will save you. There’s also, separate from the skills, a secondary ability where you can have a temporary buff to command points and bravery - it builds the more scared your squad gets. Save that for a tight spot. 8. Take a mix of secondary weapons. You want one shotgun minimum but the flamer is amazing. It will melt enemies in cover, and stop or weaken mobbing enemies. Upgrade the grenade launcher with xenotech as soon as possible because it has a further slowing effect. 9. When you trigger a massive onslaught, get into an area, often a corner, with only one means of approach. Deploy as many sentries as possible, chuck down a couple of flares, and put everybody on suppressive. On topic, I’m not 100 per cent sure but I think marines on suppressive don’t only suppress in the initial direction. 10. Tools, tools, tools! Prioritise this resource. Not only does it let you rest by sealing doors, you can trade them for command points. 11. This becomes less important when you have a core squad of rank 10s and a bunch of mid level backups but for at least half the game also prioritise hunting the upgrade resources. This will allow you to quickly add gadgets to your marines AND trade for tools/sentries before deployment. There’s a frequent between deployment narrative mission that can gain you these resources - use it and use that time lost for healing in medbay. 12. Take. It. Slow. There are several missions where you’ll end up underground or at the top of a tower and as you’ve described, no going back. However, you can tackle the mission in chunks by extracting at key points and coming back refreshed. Do this for that last stretch.
Sorry, a LOT of info there, I’m quite aware that I am not a concise writer, but it’s a hard game which is often poorly explained. I’ve got the above and doubtless more I’ve forgotten about by experience and research, and my second play through is night and day.
It is a hard game though, and it’s supposed to be, but is IMO a quietly brilliant one.
Bonus - take it slow.

Cheers, I appreciate the info. This is the mission where aliens are attacking the Otago and you have to deploy the turrets and motion trackers. I am doing all of what you say, but there's just times where the game decides to trap me in a pincer as I'm moving to the location, a runner gets up close and bursts acid all over the squad when I kill it, then a drone comes along and abducts one of my marines and walks around a corner as the squad is firing on another xeno in front of them even when I'm hammering the triangle button to kill the bastard that's abducting them. Then someone gets knocked out cold and can't be revived with a med pack and there's just no point from that. It's like I say the annoyances of things like being unable to change the suppressing fire cone after I set it, or the squad seemingly taking forever to kill one alien. I don't even know how much of the mission is left from the point of trying to install the motion trackers and when I die I have to restart the mission from the beginning because as I mentioned, this is a mission where they decide not to have any auto save or checkpoints for some reason. I'll give it a few more attempts, because I used my best guys on the last mission they can't be used this mission, so I have a scout, a medic, a sargeant and a private on my team. I think my frustration with the game would be allievated so much if they just give you the option to manually save. It's a good game when it all clicks, having to bunker down with a massive onslaught was coming was this dynamic fight for survival where I scrambled on the fly to barricade into a room with one checkpoint and weld it, set the flare down, suppressive fire and then as soon as they breached I set the flamethrower on them and the encounter was just over in seconds. When it works it really works, but there are times when it decides not to or punishes me in a way that I feel is beyond my control and it's unfair.
So I tried it again, everything going ok, got to the point of deploying the first motion tracker and every fucking xeno on the planet is constantly coming out to meet me, down to the point where I've used up my ammo and resorted to secondary weapons. I couldn't even move because of it and now one of the marines is knocked down and I'm expected to carry him. First time that's happened too, this is what I mean, it just decides to fuck you at random and now I have to play the same 20 mins again to get to the same point and hope the same doesn't happen.
Oh and my big annoyance about suppressing fire? You set it to look at a specific field of view in front and the squad member will eventually decide he needs to look behind him, even when you know nothing is behind you because you're just moving from the ARC. And because you can't adjust the aim you have to cancel it and then spend another command point to reset it back to what it was.

I was woken up this morning by the sound of a M314 motion tracker going off. It was a bin lorry reversing outside and yes, I have played far too much Dark Descent over the past week. I'm really loving it though, super tense, excellent atmosphere, it really feels like Aliens. Sad to read there is currently no word of DLC.

It’s very very good, but I didn’t complete it - found a pretty steep difficulty spike. One day I’ll probably return and start it afresh. If you like the universe it’s well worth a go. Despite the low budget it’s probably the best representation of Aliens (plural) that we’ve seen.

When it all clicks, it does feel really good and unique. An isometric squad based strategy game that's also a survival horror. If that sounds cool then give it a try, but just be aware that there are difficulty spikes to the degree that it can feel a little unfair sometimes, alien patrol path walking right into you or spawning aliens directly behind you, that kind of thing. There was one mission that if you read earlier in the thread made me this close to stopping the game altogether. I think no manual save unless you make camp mid mission really hurts and could have saved some frustration, particularly in some missions that are 45 mins long where there is no option to make camp. Die and you gotta do it all again and hope you don't get fucked over

Agree with what Tufty & Drake have said and definitely worth £22. Part of me regrets not restarting on ironman mode once I'd learned the mechanics but the game is/was a bit too janky to do that reliably.

It seems pretty decent from what little I've played so far. They've certainly nailed the whole vibe anyway.

Did the tutorial and first mission. Too early to tell but the atmosphere is decent..the main thing it did though is make me want to watch aliens again. Growing up aliens and predator were my two favourite movies. Oh how different life would have been without having two older brothers, I'd definitely be a very different person.

Back to the first mission to finish it up after one marine died and one lost an arm.
I do like it but my god just let me save it. The auto save feature is shit and I don't want to ha ve to repeat 15 minutes because I clicked the wrong button..

There we go, there's the worst part about the game imo. I dont understand why. There is a manual save of sorts when you bunker yourself in a room and rest but you need to commit the resources into making it obviously. Doesn't help when there are missions that don't allow you to do that, so one slip up and you have a good 30 minutes to replay. Kept happening to me with one mission, first 25 mins go absolutely fine and then just difficulty spike outta nowhere. Replaying it all is so tedious

I'm not sure which difficulty you're playing on but I don't think there's ever really a shortage of the "tool" resource so don't be afraid to save often. And it's really useful for stress management!

I'm on normal. On the first main mission I ran out of tools and only rested twice on the first deployment. However I'm probably playing it wrong at the moment as I'm learning the ropes.

Dodgy save system and jank aside this is very good. Nails the atmosphere and the aliens universe. It's also really really tense which is kind of what I want from an aliens game.

I’ve not played this in ages but I remember this: Always load up on tools so you can seal doors and save/recover Take as many sentry guns as possible Take a smart gunner Take a shotgun Take flamers Also if/when you can get a silenced sniper, they can make the stealth sections much easier.

On I think the fifth main mission now and just paid to unlock the silencer for the sniper as any stealth bit is pretty badly implemented. On the last mission the game tried to get me to stealth through a section with a special alien and some sleeping ones. After a few attempts I just set up 3 sentries at the beginning of the area then I triggered everything on purpose and ran back through the sentries. The name of the game is sentry sentry sentry, especially because sentries killing aliens don't add to the hunt bar. But yeah I love it.
