I couldn't see a thread for the new Swiss army knife of the modern douch bag, the smart watch.
I want one. I'm on Android. I specifically want it to be able to withstand the elements. I want to go swimming with it and also I'm hoping someone can tell me if there's one I can take in a sauna and steam room.
I've been looking at some £500-£600 Garmin's, but they have something called Garmin Pay that is only supported by a handful of UK banks.
I'm now looking at the Samsung Galaxy 4 Classic, 46mm. Any advice?

There's a new Pixel Watch coming soon, should be reasonably priced.

Can't help you with either of those smart watches you mention but I can tell you that it's generally a bad idea to take a smart watch into a sauna or steam room. They are not usually designed to withstand that level of temperature/humidity. Learnt that lesson the expensive way with a broken garmin swimwatch a few years back.

Garmin's look the most waterproof and outdoorsy off all the smart watches so if they can't take it I guess the others won't. I might still get a Galaxy 4 though, for normal everyday wear. What's like "the daddy" of android smart watches?

What do smartwatch owners actually use it for? Honest question.
I have an aldi smartwatch in the form of a fitness band, and it can do stuff like get notifications, control music, etc... But tbh I almost never use most of the things it can do.
That might be because I keep forgetting I can control my music/podcasts with it. But I mainly use my headphones for that anyway.
The only things I really use it for are the alarms and timers, and checking the weather.
What's the killer app?

I’m with Bill on this one: been pondering an Apple Watch pretty much since they were introduced, but I’m never quite sure I “get” what they’re for.
Mind you: I didn’t get iPads either, until I inherited my late wife’s one, and I must admit it’s been more useful than I had anticipated.

Yeah, was gonna say just leave it in the locker for half an hour. Sounds like a very bad idea to me. I like my Fossil gen 5, but the proprietary charger is a pain in the arse so couldn't really recommend it. Standard wireless charging would definitely be top of the list for my next one.

The fitness stuff, mainly. Ive got a shelved apple watch I havent worn for ages because, ultimately, I found charging it annoying and it to be a bit intrusive. I dont really need to know my heart rate at all times or whatever, so it just became more hassle than I could be bothered with. On the other hand, my brother gets a discounted apple watch through his health insurance and gets reduced premiums based on his activity. I would find that a bit big brothery but he is a super serious athlete (hes the kind of person who would notices that covid/something has knocked like 5 seconds a mile off his times). So... yeah... Im not particularly sporty, so I just found it annoying. Most things you can do with it arent very good versions of the thing they let you do. The only killer app is that it lets you send drawings of cocks to other people with apple watches.

Cheap fitness bands have become the new Casio watch for work, mine is scuffed and got paint on it but I still on my last band so not getting a new one yet until this band goes.

I only got it so the kids could read e-comics, but I've found I use it way more than I expected. Smart watches might be similar. The only thing I wish my fitness band did is contactless payments, but I think the newer ones do that too.

Stopped wearing my Apple Watch a few months ago, the only killer app for me was contactless payment but it’s not as reliable as using a card. It also fell over every time I used it for running with strava so the whole thing was a bit pointless really. Once I got bored of the design that was it for me, I’m sure the battery will be useless by the time I fancy wearing it again

Apple Pay has 100% replaced all of my cards to the point that I never take a wallet out but there is nothing that makes you feel like a cunt quite like payment failing on your apple watch.

Yeah I realised it’s just as easy to pull my phone from a pocket as it was to wave my wrist, works more reliably on the phone as well. You look like a proper cunt when you wave your fancy watch at the bus ticket reader for the 4th time before pulling your wallet out while a queue or people waits behind for you to hurry the fuck up
edit doh bongo beat me to it

Would be the same for me but the useless cunts at Tesco Bank refuse to allow their cards on G Pay.

That would literally be a dealbreaker for me. I paid for my last two cars on apple pay.

I just have a revolut virtual card linked to Google pay on mine. If anything dodgy happens then I can just set it up again in seconds rather than getting a replacement posted out.
And yeah, never even bothered setting up Google pay on my watch due to how cunty it looks when people pay that way.

I’ve had iPads at home since the first one released (work provided) and still can’t work out what they’re for after 10 years. The only thing I use it for is as a second screen if there’s two football matches on at the same time I want to watch. As for my Apple Watch, I use it for all payments (never had it not work), activity tracking, Strava, Shazam, timers, that sort of thing. Also have To Do lists on it so I can do the shop and tick off my list without having to hold anything. Wouldn’t ever want to not have one now. And I’ve only got a Series 3 or 4, it’s not even a good one but never noticed it being slow like most Apple devices once they’re a few years old.

Yeah, smart watches and tablets are still a gimmick in search of a purpose.
If you've got a bit of money burning a hole and want something new and shiny, I'd look elsewhere.

I find waving your phone at an oyster reader or at a pay point in a shop excruciating compared to a credit card. I just think that person is an arsehole with their posh phone... But I realise basically every phone does it nowadays. I just can't disconnect how pretentious it looks.
One of my CCs stopped working recently. Think the chip must be bust or smth and so for a week or so I've been using it via my phone, and it makes me feel like Barry Homeowner everytime. I'm getting old and the march of technology is beginning to make new twitchy...

Mind you: I didn’t get iPads either, until I inherited my late wife’s one, and I must admit it’s been more useful than I had anticipated. I've had a few Apple Watches over the years. Series 2, 3 and now a 7. As much as I love mine and I hate the odd day I forget to wear it (not happened in over almost 500 days according to my current streak) I will go home and collect it or spend the day a bit agitated. Ultimately, it's just a watch. If you get one thinking you'll have something new and shiny to play with, you wont. You'll set it up and about 20 minutes later you'll think "Huh, this really is just a watch". But despite it being just a watch, I like it. I wouldn't recommended someone buying one unless the know they're just getting a watch but if you take it for what it is, they're ace. I rarely have issues with Apple Pay with the watch, I like that I don't have to check my phone for notifications and if needs be I can reply on the watch quickly and I find the health data it tracks interesting. I'm sure the above can be attributed to most smart watches but I know if I broke or lost mine today, I'd order a new one tomorrow.

My tablet is pretty much used exclusively on weekend mornings in bed just browsing random shit while I have a cuppa. Recently upgraded it to a S8+ and have absolutely no idea why I did that. It's practically the same size as my laptop now, which I could've used instead.
I've used it to watch stuff in bed when poorly too, but again could've just used a laptop...

I have an old Nvidia shield tablet which is Only used for watching stuff on my commute. It's very much creaking, it's slow as fuck and the battery is shot. I could do with replacing it but given it only gets a few hours use a week, it's hard to justify.

I use an iPad Pro over my MacBook pretty much exclusively for just consuming content. Internet, YouTube, reading stuff. It’s much better than a laptop. After my phone, it’s probably my most used gadget.
