Almost finished with Resi Village.
Got a week off before starting a new job, so thought I'd give Rimworld a go. Been on my list for a long time. Oh boy, it is pretty overwhelming. Have watched a tutorial video on some of the basics, but I just need to get stuck in. However, I think I might've grown out of endless games like this, which is a bit saddening. Resi Village is pretty much the polar opposite and it's taken me months to get through even that -_-

I found Rimworld pretty easy to start, but some things like the caravans were incredibly confusing.
I stopped playing not long after buying it a few years ago, as it ate weekends and evenings in the way Championship Manager or Diablo 3 used to.

Interesting...! I will certainly give it another whirl, but I'll need to be in the right mood, I can tell.

I've just played through DKC this afternoon so will probably end up caving in and rebuying Tropical Freeze (or just digging my Wii U out of the loft like a sensible person) Think I got pretty far in it but drifted away due to my Destiny addiction at the time. erekose - it's not all that bad really. Zero Mission and Fusion are both short and sweet (and ZM is already done and dusted), and playing Super again means I can test my memory with a 100% run. 2 is the only real question mark here as to my shame I've never played any of the versions of it. I'll probably stick with AM2R for now and come back and play Samus Returns at a later date. Altogether you're still looking at less time combined than you'd commit to a single 20+ hour game. I wish Nintendo would release samus’ return on the Switch. It’s the only Metroid game I’ve never played (not played AMR2 or the GB original either).

I feel like if they wanted to, they would have done so already before Dread. It would now look very poor visually in comparison, and probably too much effort to rework at this point.

It wouldn't look as good as Dread, but it wouldn't look TOO bad up-rezzed. It'd just look like an indie 2.5D Metroidvania rather than a AAA Nintendo product. www.youtube.com/watch?v=prIAlvpjHfsJust as an idea of how Samus Returns looks at a higher resolution.

Hmm yeah, it could be done and they may still do it. But it's been four years since it released already. Have Nintendo done any 3DS to Switch ports before?

Mm, I don't think Nintendo has, no. The closest I can think of is Skyward Sword HD, with the Wii and 3DS having comparable graphic capabilities.
There was the Code of Princess port, but that's by the team led by ex-Treasure staff, not Nintendo.

Believe it or not I'm about 3 weeks into Red Dead Online. Horrific controls aside, its been a pretty decent switch off from work. There's no insufferably slow story. The mechanics aren't well explained (or in some cases are not explained at all), but you're given the time and space to figure most of it out yourself., which I prefer. There is plenty to do and the bizarre gold grind actually helps you familiarise and maximise a particular role before moving onto the next.
It definitely helps playing with friends though as most randomers are ruthless, aggressive and well over a hundred levels higher than me. I've been bullied out of servers a number of times due to being repeatedly one-shotted with some kind of explosive ammo from huge distances, justbseconds after respawning.
I've also encountered a bug that has stopped certain collectors items from spawning. Something I confirmed when trying to hunt wild flowers with my girlfriend. She could see them, but I couldn't. I can't dig fossils or find coins either. I've had a look online for a fix, but nothing has worked.
As you can tell from what I've written, I really want to love it, but I am constantly finding something to be annoyed about or get frustrated over. I can't begin to explain how much I hate every horse in this game. And any mission in which you have to search for clues. So bloody boring and primitive.
Still, I've finally got something out of it. The world design is genuinely phenomenal. The best I have ever seen. Every tree feels purposefully placed. Like every blade of grass has been placed using a real world reference. Every area offers some genuinely stunning views. Both up high and down low. It makes every other open world map look entirely artificial or man-made (as I guess they technically are). Especially the recent Valhalla.
It's just a shame that mechanically its a pretty shonky game.

The Outer Worlds.
First bought it ages ago, but quickly lost interest after arriving in Edgewater. Was bored at the weekend and plumbing the depths of my Steam library found this, and decided to give it another go. This time I'm hooked! Quirky and good fun, looks great in ultrawide ( albeit after a lot of messing about and applying 3rd party patches), got some really silly weapons now that splat people in interesting ways.

One thing I'm playing now is a game called "watch someone else play through Deadly Premonition on YouTube".
It's great. I get to experience all the wonderful weirdness, none of the awful gameplay, and I can fast-forward past all the boring bits (see: anything that involves driving)

I had all kinds of troubles with crashing loading screens and I even had to set up some proper controls myself. Most of the controls weren't that bad, but not being able to aim with the right mouse-button for instance was an absolute no-go.

I loved the game when it came out - I don't mind a bit of shonkiness. However I've been following Swery's output since then, and based on his work since, I became convinced it was a glorious fluke. But I replayed it a year or two back and there was definite genius at play; it wasn't all down to serendipity. Of course, they went and changed the ending for the re-release, which was a huge mistake.
Edit: I played it on console. I can imagine it being pretty rough on PC. Maybe other people derive satisfaction from picking the right item to synergize with their build and stats every time, but when I have to make that decision a hundred times or more per run, it stops being interesting really damn fast. At least with action games that use similar mechanics (from BoI to Hades) force you to adopt different playstyles depending on your build, but with turn-based combat you just don't get that. Turns play out the same every time no matter what your build is, putting a strict upper limit on how much gameplay variation is possible. Ring of Pain is definitely a worse offender in this than Slay the Spire or Monster train, but playing any of them leaves me feeling pretty much the same, that my successes are more due to luck than skill and that the only reliable way to victory is identifying the most overpowered items and praying that the dice don't roll in your disfavor. Interesting! I can see the moment to moment decisions being a bit same-y (thinking specifically of Slay the Spire here) and some drudgery being involved in regard to variation, but I guess there's a great appeal in getting your basic strategy (eg fight all the Elites) in place, and then trying to mould your deck around that. Like, success is definitely repeatable between runs, but the excitement is in discovering the cards and I guess the synergies (I have never been good at this).

I can't imagine what terrible thing someone could do to deserve the hell of trying to play this with a mouse and keyboard. I didn't really mind the bad gameplay by itself, the bigger problem was that the bad stuff (combat, driving) was so long and boring that I got fed up of waiting to get to the next good thing. Yeah the car conversations with Zach are amazing, but they don't last for very long before they start repeating themselves.

Paying XCOM 2 - War of the Chosen quite a bit at the moment. It's very moreish.
Though I'm not playing it properly, I'm save scumming to fuck and trying different tactics if it all goes wrong. But I'd be pretty much wiped out by now, so I'm treating this as learning curve. I'll try a proper playthrough I've completed this.
Also playing Final Fantasy 7 again (original, none of this fancy remake nonsense). Currently grinding limit breaks early on. Cloud, Tifa and Barret are on their level 2 limit breaks and I haven't reached the chocobo farm yet.

I can point you in the direction of a couple of YouTubers if you need a hand getting started with XCOM2. It's definitely pretty overwhelming at first!

Yeah, I was kind of fascinated by the way all the NPCs had schedules - you could see them visiting the grocery store, or cooking dinner or watching TV at the appropriate times, so I was well wrapped up in it and loved all that slow stuff.

I'm muddling through it fairly well now though and working out tactics to deal with each new enemy as they come up, which is the only time I really need to reload. But it's a test and learn. I do think the world map between missions is a bit clunky and can be overwhelming but it's making sense now. The constant alerts play into the one more turn feeling tbh.

Have they sorted out the Godawful mess with the launcher yet? I had a carefully curated set of mods that I'd come to depend on, but Take Two buggered up the launcher and stopped all mods working.

Look up TapCat, he's got some useful guides, and has a bunch of Lets Plays where he explains why he does certain things. It's really informative.

Still playing Ys VIII. Such a lovely change from the usual JRPG tropes (so far). No world-threatening evil or boy-becomes-hero stuff, just a group of castaways on an island that time seemingly forgot. Explore the island, find castaways, do side-quests (which actually make sense), expand your camp and figure out what the hell is going on and how to get off it. Combat is nice and breezy as well. Lovely.

Started playing Victor Vran, and am quite positively suprised. It's fast paced, streamlined action rpg fun, and the monologues of the demon inside the main char's head are actually pretty droll. Started on hard mode, and although I have to run from time to time, I haven't died yet, so it was probably the right choice.

Got through the first area a few weeks ago, haven't been back to it yet, but it was teasing that system map. Slightly addicted to the MW5 loop for now. And RDR Online would have remained on my HDD if it wasn't for the constant network errors trying to do anything.

Unfortunately that's way too common. Bloodlines is comparatively good with making evil* options feel more convincing, but otherwise I haven't tried playing as an as******e all that often. Usually there's just no proper context or important reasons to suddenly behave like that.
*My third playthrough recently with a Dominate/Intimidate-Ventrue felt like it should and declining Humanity helped with it as well. Tbh I think the alignment system itself is kind of outdated, and requires really good writing and design to work around its flaws. In this one, if you choose an alignment dialogue option, it's either one axis or another, not both. So if I'm going to be Lawful Evil, I can only really be true to one of those things - there's no "Lawful Evil" option. And it's horrendous for Lawful Good too. When you catch some people who might be traitors to the crusade, you can only choose either extremely Good, or extremely Lawful in how to deal with them (or just murder them for the lols, because that's what Evil is!). So it's either "let's forgive them and live together in happiness!", or "EXECUTE THE TRAITORS THEY BROKE THE LAAAAAAAAW" There's just... no middle ground at all. And trying to use common sense (well, maybe we should put them on trial?) locks you out of Mythic Path options later. Anyway, imo alignment needs to be a lot more flexible, or just don't have it at all. Like Witcher 3, where you make important decisions and all the results are shitty in some way. Or Mass Effect, where Renegade is more "intimidating loose cannon", rather than actually evil.

So it's either "let's forgive them and live together in happiness!", or "EXECUTE THE TRAITORS THEY BROKE THE LAAAAAAAAW" Yeah, that's unfortunately a common problem in computer games that employ the DnD alignment system. I wouldn't say the system is dated, though, it's just that it takes a lot of work to implement it properly in a multiple choice dialogue system.

Picked up Stellaris Console Edition for a tenner to scratch the itch my Star Trek binges gave me. First impressions are that it seems more complicated than my actual job but the universe looks very rich.

Stealth 1440p/60fps patch for Vampyr on Series X and PS5.
Series S, PS4 Pro and One X also got boosted. Don't understand why the Pro is higher than the OX, unless maybe it's checkerboarded there and native on OX?
Anyway, nice little update for the spooky season.

Just bought "Lake" with £15 gamepass credit. I fancy a change of pace, had tried with Good Life but not enjoying the slog of it.
