Yes, I keep mistiming my dodging for some of his moves and I do get frustrated that he can keep interrupting my combo attacks and then take a huge chunk of my health bar out. I feel I am getting there though and it will be very satisfying once I finally see him off and head off to the next boss who will slaughter me. I am quite pleased though as I normally cannot do games like this at all. I know Black Myth is not one of these types of games, but I stank at Demon's Souls, Bloodborne, Dark Souls etc and haven't even tried to die in Elden Ring yet.

It’s more forgiving than a souls (as you don’t need to regain your souls, and can respec freely) but in terms of learning enemy patterns and execution it’s certainly very similar.

So I’m on Chapter 4 now, and I’ve beat every boss up until this point (except the Blacksmith - I got him to 50% on my single attempt but I’ll come back to him later). I’m lvl 72.
On my last journey through the game I hadn’t beat Cyan Loong or the Ch.3 end boss. It’s essentially been a chapter every 2 days this time. I’m now in uncharted territory though, so the game is slowing right down again because I don’t know where to go, what’s coming up, and I’m checking every corner for stuff.
I think the hardest boss I’ve fought, who gave me just as much shit this time around, was Non-Able (the dude that’s tied up). I can’t explain why I’ve found him continually difficult, and he’s not rated as particularly difficult, but I just died against him over and over in his second phase.

That's mighty impressive going! I finished the First Chapter and had to take a bit of a break afterwards last night, but I will dive back in today. I am not really sure if I will be able to progress much further if bosses get too much harder but so far I am able to defeat most bosses within 4 - 10 attempts I think.

Just spent 20 minutes on the Blacksmith and he’s down now too.

Ok, now I’m just stuck. Can’t beat the Ch.4 boss, can’t beat the Scorpionlord in the Ch.4 secret area, and the only one I haven’t defeated on my way to those is Yellow Loong, who I also still can’t beat

Scorpionlord is hard as nails, took me a good few attempts. Apparently you can make the fight easier by not fighting him directly at his shack but I'm stubborn.

So, I killed Scorpionlord about 40 mins after Yellow Loong last night. Today I finished up the ch. 4 secret area and main boss, and then worked through all of ch.5 and the secret area. Saved at the first incense of chapter 6.
Annoyingly, I travel home for a week tomorrow and I don’t think it’s going to play well on the Portal so I won’t be able to finish it up until I come back.

I think I am going to call it quits, I am no good at games like this. I thought after the first chapter maybe I was making some progress but in the second everything just ramps up, including the enemies between bosses which just take out too much of my health before I get to the big fights which are in turn, just a lot harder. Perhaps I just need a break but I suspect once I go to another game, I won't return for a long time.

That is a shame. The game does get harder and then, once you’re levelled up some, gets easier in general traversal with the exception of some individual bosses. Is it the pattern recognition you’re struggling with, or reflexes to dodge attacks?
Remember you can respec the sparks at any time. I found most success by focusing early on the light attack martial art tree (all except the last one - I generally don’t want to be out of stamina, and I didn’t bother with any of the mobile spin stuff), maxing health, and adding enough points in the smash stance and charge tree to get 3 focus points unlocked. Once you’re there, add some into the stamina management tree on martial arts page (reducing stamina use in dodging, specifically) and get to maxing out the Immobilize skill.
I haven’t learnt the correct timing of the counterflow mechanic, and I’ve never immobilised an enemy as they attack to maximise that, so you don’t need all the skill timings. Learn the timing of the 4 light attack combo. It’s important to know when each moves finishes so that you can dodge out of them as needed, and once you have the spark set a dodge doesn’t break the combo so you can always attack-attack-attack-dodge-attack and still get the full benefit. Once you have focus points ready changing the 4th light attack for a heavy will get you a bit more damage, and return health (again, a spark to set in the charge tree, I think). That is the bread and butter of my game, and has got me through 95% of it. You’ll get more abilities but this is the groundwork for all of it, everything else is just flavour. I haven’t used Pillar or Thrust stances at all but I’m sure they’ll help in places.

It's a mix of everything. A large chunk of it is I am one of those gamers who is not that good at 'hard' games, I've mostly played platformers (when younger), FPS shooters in my teens/early 20s and then story driven open world games since (so, about the last 20 years... yikes). I think I can't get my head around timing, that is definitely something, I am okay reading the moves but my timing is way off and I am not great ending my attacks in time to get out of the way of the barrage the enemies unleash. I find I am rarely able to time a heavy attack (even with the focus up to max) and I just get swatted away.
I've tried to balance my sparks, I decided not to focus on health when I found the pill that gave me a huge boost. Stamina I rarely run out of but Mana I do, especially against the bosses. I also just focused on the first fighting method, I decided not to waste sparks by spreading them thing across multiple techniques.

I really only use heavy attacks on bosses when they're either immobilised or fighting my clones (Pluck of Many). For general rank-and-file level enemies they can work as the 4th hit of the combo but I don’t do charged attacks unless it's an opening move, as you have time to charge, approach and unleash before they aggro you.
Mana is a problem until mid-game. You can’t unlock the ability to add sparks to mana until you have 30 points in the Martial Arts page, and then each level takes 2 sparks so it’s costly. That’s why immpobilise is important. Once it’s levelled up you get a lot out of it and itös relatively cheap to cast.

A key thing is to not use heavy attacks until your bar is full. A fully charged up hit absolutely decimates bosses health bars,

Yeah, I think as I come from slightly less intense games (AC series etc) where a heavy strike is not quite so punishing to you if it goes wrong, I need to get my mindset a bit more in line with these types of games. It's quite a challenge changing years/decades of gaming muscle memory!

Back on this now over the last few nights after a bit of time away from it. Chapter 3 completed, everything beaten, went back to chapter 2 and got Black Loong first attempt and just beat the Yin Tiger after fuck knows how many attempts! Now at level 69 and onward to chapter 4!

Finished this today. Well, completed the story yesterday and the “secret” ending today. Frustratingly, you need essentially a full ng+ play through for the platinum, so probably another week until I’m actually done.

Platinum done.
You need to play ng+ all the way to the end of the chapter 5 secret area in order to get the required upgrade materials for crafting all the weapons and armour. Took me maybe 7 hours to do that. You can just brute force boss fights, and most don’t last more than 30 seconds.
