Just spent around 40 mins doing a guided tour of a colony.
Utterly pointless but strangely enjoyable.

I don't like the colour palette - everything is washed out (dark areas are just brown). Have tried a couple of mods but they don't do much. Not even sure HDR is working.
Did you try this one?

I don't really feel the urge to go off and explore outside the quests in this like I would with Skyrim or TOTK, for example, not a good sign

Combat so far feels a bit… meh. I miss VATS. It was a good compromise given the gunplay has never been close enough to, say, Destiny.

I don't really feel the urge to go off and explore outside the quests in this like I would with Skyrim or TOTK, for example, not a good sign I know how this sounds but give it 20hrs. I suppose I don't get the urge to land on random planets but once you're more settled into the rhythms it's so easy to get sidetracked when a mission takes you a City/outpost/space station or there's a point of interest whilst walking on the surface somewhere. Also I have a to do list a mile long and I still can't resist speaking to everyone in case they have another quest for me. There are so many things I want to do and haven't got round to yet, and I still get the sense I've barely made a dent. The difference is that where before you'd pick a destination on the map and set out there, getting distracted by map icons slightly off route as you walked. Now it's more like, you have a quest that takes you to system x. You go directly to system x but maybe you get a hailed upon arrival or maybe you land and what you find isn't what you expected, or on route to where you need to go on world, you overhear conversations or witness a unique event, or perhaps you pop into a shop to sell something and then get another quest from that. It's all still pretty organic but it doesn't reveal itself until things have settled down a bit and you naturally find the rhythm. As others have mentioned the start is a bit of a crazy whirlwind and then after that it's almost a bit overwhelming as there's suddenly no more handholding but it's still unclear how many things work.

I visited Argos in New Atlantis and there was no laminated book of dreams. 1/10 what sort of woke shit is this?

Gave it until New Atlantis on series X and I think I'll shelve this until a 60fps patch hopefully lands.
Absolutely want to hug whoever designed those ship interiors, glad I tried it purely for that, incredible work and clearly a labour of love.
So it's a shame the batshit insane intro with Barrett along with 30fps frame rate, clunky menus and navigation all desperately fight to take you out the world and illusion you're on some deep epic space adventure.
It might improve 30 hours in as mentioned in reviews, but I kinda wish Bethesda respected my time and tried to grab my attention from the off, rather than have me laugh at mental logic used by someone you've just met.
Has scratched an itch for an RPG, so I think I'll give Cyberpunk a try now and come back to this at some point.

I have actually been enjoying it, took out the first pirate base then explored an abandoned station instead of continuing the main quest. It went on forever, got some decent kit out of it, and now I'm wandering the surface like a heavily armed space hobo.

Started it tonight. PC Game Pass on my aging 4xxx AMD CPU with a 2080 at 4k. Performance is baddd with the settings it's chosen for me. Feels like sub-30 FPS which is a bit shit. I'm getting regular horrible stutters too. Good 3 seconds or so every 5 minutes or so. Couldn't be arsed to look into fixes yet.
The game itself...
The opening is dreadful. The mining bit and Barrett and the pirate attack. Awful.
Spent an hour in the character creator making my person look like my GF, at her request. That was fun.
Vasco saying "Captain Wood" was awesome.
I like the style more than I expected, but the menus look like they are going to require a lot of clicking.
Enemy AI was awful. The pirates were walking with their backs turned to me when I fought them...
Landing on Kharm took me a while to figure out. The amount of loading screens is abysmal.
Nothing new here that hasn't already been covered by some journalists. That said, I'm still looking forward to picking up again tmrw.

Went for a walk on the moon tonight.
See, me, Sam, and the moon, we've got this little understanding when it comes to little matters like oxygen and freezing to death...

Does the game ever become interesting or fun?
Ain't seeing it.

Sunk a couple of hours in. It's OK I guess? I have no real urge to get back to it though.

You shouldn't even be considering playing at 4k on a 2080 for pretty much any new game. I have a 3090 and play games at 1440p as playing at a higher frame rate trumps marginal visual gains.

I’m really trying to like it but, fuck, it’s old fashioned and rinky dink and clumsy and the NPC’s all walk like they’re trying to hold a poop in. Bethesda need to take a long, hard look at themselves as a company- this is not good enough in 2023. Said it before- they’re a AA developer, at best.

Isn't the tier below AA an Indie studio
You might not like their games (I'm not usually the biggest fan either) but they are still one of the biggest studios out there. It's fine you don't have to like everyone's games but it's a bit silly to talk down their standing and influence in the industry.

All this talk of PC settings reminds me why I don’t play games on PC. Last thing I want to do when I boot a game is mess with graphical settings. Sounds like a chore.

I did - I need to do an A/B comparison as it didn't seem great - have tried a different one and will roll with that. It's really a case of a) artistic intent b) lack of HDR which contributes to my annoyance.

Takes about a minute the first time you start the game though Dave and is generally rewarded with a much better experience than playing on a console.

I can appreciate that and know that people like to just put a game in and play. I like 60fps minimum and will gladly drop stuff in service of that, game permitting. It didn't take long because you have a fairly good idea what your pc is capable of. This game unfortunately is CPU bound so there are very few settings that have any bearing on the resulting FPS. There is no wonder it runs at 30fps on console although there has to be room for optimsation from BGS via patches.

The thing that appeals to me about BG3 is that it plays a lot like games I enjoyed 15-20 years ago, rather than todays drab AAA titles. I'm going to give Starfield a fair crack, but my fear is that 10-20 hours in I'll end up getting bored with way too many distractions, that aren't overly interesting, unlike BG3 where I feel they've put in a lot of love and effort into different branches you can go down. Also just because you can make an open world adventure that spans 100-150 hours, doesn't mean you should for the sake of it. Ah a shoe I need to give back to someone who's lost it across a map. Ah quest complete. Ironically I think the reason I'm getting on with Starfield so we'll is exactly that it plays like a game from 15 years ago. It's very much the ageing Bethesda formula underneath everything. If you set the graphics to low res (and confined yourself to a few maps tbf), it could be a game from 2008. Very few AAA tropes from the intervening years have penetrated. Legendary/Epic/Rare loot categories and colours is the only one that stands out. I think those categories and colours are from the 1990s, but I could be wrong.

I couldn't be arsed to fiddle with settings etc late last night so will sort this eve. It's the first game I've played on this PC that has really struggled though. Admittedly, I don't play many brand new releases these days, but Cyberpunk faired a lot better.

The only real unsolvable problem with Starfield is that a Starfield New Vegas situation in which they let a developer actually capable of making a game use their tooling and assets to make something good is probably not going to happen.
