Plus given they can't make a game without zombies in it, you'd imagine they're going to have a faction that augments the body (basically making them alien-esque), victims of a plague, etc. etc. I can't imagine we'll be fighting Jonny Bravo and some space pirates the whole time. I want to be hyped for it, but with the release window shifting so regularly I'm just apathetic now. I still had it in my head that it was coming in early 2023 until people started talking like it was half a year away.  |

I initially liked the way you gradually learned the alien languages in No Mans' Sky, but one word at a time for each grates like fuck after a while. I still haven't completely mastered Vy'Keen in it. If they took the scanner idea from Mass Effect: Andromeda where SAM was parsing the data from the Remnant glyphs and it would give you a description of what it was believed to mean along with possible alternatives given contexts, and gradually unlocked translation that way in bundles of words, that would be a faster way of building up an alien lexicon.
Ideally, alien characters should speak in their own languages with an AI synthesised voice translating it into something understandable with a few seconds delay. |

As much as I adore things like Star Trek TNG and Mass Effect, I've always found the concept of humanoid English-speaking aliens a bit silly. As tempting as it would have been to make a bombastic space opera, it's something we've all seen before. I like that Bethesda have opted for a more realistic, gritty, and grounded take on human space exploration. I understand the sentiment, but I feel that's dominating modern sci-fi and I can't see it anymore. My biggest concern about Starfield is that it looks very grey and brown and dull. After Fallout 4 I hoped for less of that, not more. I mean, it could still be engaging, but frankly if I trust any developer to pull it off, it's certainly not Bethesda. They fell flat on their nose with their puny attempts at engaging storytelling and characters in Fallout 4, and I think they need to either massively up their game or stay in their lane. But I don't see any of that in Starfield footage so far, every single character and line of dialogue I've seen so far was just insipid. I'd rather they went for silly, as that's what they're best at. Oh well. We'll see. |

I need aliens in my sci-fi too. It’s just so boring without them.
I really don’t want VATS though. Slowing down time to shoot someone in the balls isn’t fun to me. I’d rather have Mass Effect-style biotic powers.

Think he claims to have leaked it. Despite them actually registering the IP giving away that it was coming.
Pretty sure he also thought it was the generic looking arena shooter that we saw artwork for a day or 2 before the MS event.

Don't get me wrong there are some half decent leakers out there (Nibel and the one that seems to get all the cod stuff right clearly have some inside knowledge) but loads of them are full of shit. They make claims that there is a reasonable chance of happening and then shout "look I was right" when they likely thing happens.

My interest in Starfield has been piqued by my recently replaying Fallout, so I hope this is good. I haven't looked at anything since that first trailer but it'll be nice to have another non-fantasy Bethesda RPG
I looked at Skyrim but I just can't - even for fantasy, it looks like the most generic fantasy going. Oh my God, dragons!

My 2 main hopes for Starfield are that it has a VATS-like system and the base building is a meaningful core of the game.
The frame rate looks dreadful and I think the best we can expect is 30fps (which is fine for an original, complicated, non-linear, open world RPG) but 30fps doesn't lend itself to a good FPS experience. VATS also offers good tactical combat.
I also really want the base to determine things like the size of the ship you can engineer, or the size of your crew, which in turn determines how deep into the galaxy you can travel.

Never really seen VATS as being particularly tactical. It's usually just lining up 5 headshots, then the enemy moves and you watch in slow motion as your character fires 5 shots into a wall, leaving you with no AP

I liked the VATS system too.
Obviously the ideal would be having the gunplay quality of Destiny but given how hard that is to pull off I'd prefer a competent tactical system than a mediocre traditional one, especially for an RPG.

I'd take turn-based combat every time over twitch-shooting, but VATS provides a good middle ground, and is completely optional.
A targeting system like VATS would also make a lot of sense in a futuristic setting, so it's a bit worrying we haven't seen anything but standard FPS gameplay so far.
