I've had to really force myself to hold back on this. Best to wait until there's a campaign at least, I reckon.

Well, this is addictive as fuck lol
First impressions are that it is slightly more like Northgard, the devs previous title, than perhaps the nostalgia blast of Dune 1 & 2 (or even Dune 2000) that I was hoping for. Very much enjoying it, though. The IP is probably doing some lifting, but there seems to be a perfectly decent 4X under the hood, though I'll obviously see how that pans out as I move into late game. A few systems are a little rudimentary, I guess (esp. combat), though I suspect they'll received further development/expansion as they go. Only 4 factions at the moment as well (House Atreides [Leto], House Harkonnen [the Baron], Smugglers [Tuek], and Fremen [Kynes]), so currently a tad limited in that regard.
Definitely a few balancing patches and UI tweaks, not to mention performance issues, also to be resolved. But got to say this is in a pretty impressive state for an Early Access that's literally just launched. One to watch, if you're at all interested.

The Laandsraad mechanic is good (and annoying as hell) - if you're elected you can get a load of bonuses, but then later resolutions can completely fuck you over and you have to spend influence to try and avoid them. Didn't manage to defeat a resolution on water costs, and it led to two villages on opposite sides of my territory revolting. Managed to defeat the first, but by the time my troops got the the second a raiding party was already there and all my forces got wiped out.

Yeah. The AI is also absolutely fucking me over at times. Twice now had one of the enemy factions time their attacks on my villages when I've had my troops off dealing with a raid at the other side of my territory. Sand worms also have an irritating tendency to go for my harvesters in the spice fields when I'm being raided or warring with the other factions, which means I've several times not clocked the notification to recall the unit amongst the sea of other warnings on the screen

If you buy the early access I assume that means you get the full game when it's released... Looks like it's half price (about £16) on cdkeys. Worth it?
I love classic RTS especially stuff like Age of Empires with what I guess you'd call a slight 4x twist? Also like Dune and had it on the Megadrive back in the day so this seems right up my street...

Early Access is a meaningless term that just say's you're buying and playing a game during its beta phase. Many games never leave early access, but yes, the game is yours no matter what state it's in.

I've played a couple of full games and quite enjoyed them. It seems like you've got a very thin margin for error in the early stages, but if and when you find yourself on a roll it's a bit hard to stop you (though I might've just gotten lucky). There is a simplicity to it, which isn't an inherently bad thing and is kind of pleasantly boardgamey in this case. It doesn't give you endless options, but it does reward you for knowing how to make what little you have work together.
That said, it might ultimately be a bit of an unhappy medium. It's not the revival of Dune as a classic RTS that many seem to have wanted, but it's also not a big, sweeping 4X that takes full advantage of Dune's setting and idiosyncrasies. It's fun, but it's more like Dune-flavored landgrab.
