Wow. And a perfect example of why I prefer the CRT look

Because he specifically turned on HDR on the CRT but not the other. If they were both in the same dynamic range, non-CRT filter would look brighter.
Oh anyway, not that it’s new, but after being sad that the Genesis Mini 2 sold out so quickly late last year, I saw that Amazon suddenly had more new stock last week. It’s arriving today, and I’m excited.

Quick update: Holy shit, the Genesis version of Virtua Racing was terrible. Certainly impressive for the hardware, but you can barely tell what’s going on on track with the low resolution and heavy dithering.
Super Street Fighter II might be more impressive on the Genesis than the Super Nintendo, apart from the soundtrack quality. But the included six-button controller makes it play like a dream. Really wish I had one of these growing up.
Also, I had the Gen 2 Genesis as a kid, so basically the one this particular Mini is replicating. After years of hearing how the much better the soundchip in the Gen 1 models was over the refresh, I completely disagree. This Mini lets you choose between sound chips, and while the original soundchip had a warm fuzzy quality to it, the Gen 2 chip is simply much cleaner, with the bass and drums especially popping more. Preferring the original soundchip is purely nostalgia for the model you grew up with.
Off to play some Robo Aleste.

Because he specifically turned on HDR on the CRT but not the other. If they were both in the same dynamic range, non-CRT filter would look brighter. HDR is used to compensate for the CRT masks and BFI which both darken the image and to simulate CRT's "glow". Don't forget that it's comparing a screenshot to an off-screen photo. You're right that you could put the screenshot in an HDR container too but that wouldn't make any sense, it's already in the correct dynamic range.

Yeah, I’m aware of the reasoning. But again, that explains why the CRT shot looks brighter in that comparison. Which was the only thing rajin said in his post.

I never explained my post, reason why I mentioned it was because online there are some people complaining about retrotink 5x looking dark. What are your opinions on BFI btw? I only used it for sonic 1 and 2 on my LG C1 (this game needs good motion). I barely use it due to the dark look and input lag increase. I would use it for shumps but the lag stops me.

I’m not a fan for the same reasons you listed, but I’m also not really the retrotink’s target audience (not that you can’t use BFI without a retrotink, it just seems people who buy these kinds of upscalers are the ones that use it most).
I tend to like the simplicity of a Mini console, or if BC is available, like the PS3’s PS1 and 2 compatibility, that’s a convenient way also. That, and compilations are how I retro game these days.

I’ve done that before with a PC, it’s fine once you’re in a game but be prepared for unreadable text. Especially if it’s letter boxed 16:9

So, old rail shooters! Anyone know some good ones?
I remember enjoying Rebel Assault 2 back in the days, when I was young and somehow it didn't seem to look and play like shit. I also had an old Microsoft game, Deadly Tide, which was very similar but underwater. Imagine going from something like Archimedean Dynasty to that crap.
Recently I picked up Chaos Control on Steam. It looks... strangely amazing for 1995. It has to be a full motion video, but how the hell did they get it to run so smooth and without any compression artefacts whatsoever? Shame that it's not very fun to play.

malek86 it's not old, but I've tried a game on Steam recently called 'Aces In The Dust' that might scratch that itch for you. It's a free, student game but reasonably polished, if a bit buggy in some of the menus. It has you flying 1 of 3 planes into the screen while moving a targeting reticule around independently. It feels quite arcade-retro in approach but I find it a little tricky trying to both move/dodge and aim separately, so it's not quite like Rez or Space Harrier (if you'd class that as an on-rails shooter). Have you tried any of the Panzer Dragoon games? Might be up your street? There's a remake on Steam if you're interested.

There’s one on Switch that I think literally has the words Rail Shooter in it that looks like an old Model 2 era Sega arcade, like Gunblade NY or something. Been meaning to check it out myself.
Edit: sorry, its name is Assault ChaingunS KM.

But I was specifically focusing on FMV-based games here. It really was a time of wonder, when people thought graphics couldn't get any better than a 320x240 (at best), highly compressed, jerky video with very limited gameplay. There have to be some good ones. Surely they can't all be bad? I do remember Rebel Assault 2 wasn't all that shabby in itself. And the production values seemed high for its time, including all that live action footage of questionable acting quality.

Namco's Star Blade (arcade) was really impressive at the time. Soul Star on the Mega CD/Sega CD is worth a play if you like early nineties rail shooters. Sticking to the same system there's also Sewer Shark if you're really desperate, but I wouldn't go out of my way for that one, honestly.

Does Creature Shock count? It sure should. On that matter, I guess Mega Race is also sorta one - it's almost a rail shooter under the guise of a combat racing game. But it does have more emphasis on positioning. And the best chiptune soundtrack since Out Run.

I mean, if you want to widen the criteria to driving/combat, then Road Avenger is worth a look. Very much feels like a late eighties/early nineties anime.

Microcosm amd Novastorm? Sewer Shark always caught my eye but haven't played that. In the more regular FMV style you do have Corpse Killer and Texas Ground Zero too.
Go into emulation and you have Cube Quest, a laserdisc equivalent.

Mad Dog McCree was laserdisc wasn't it?
Don't think I knew anyone that has a player though. I remember seeing them in Virgin Megastore and thinking how amazing they looked compared to VHS. I think something about them being the size of LPs made them seem impressive too.

Cube Quest is aot less known and never really appeared anywhere else.

Lovely stuff from Kim Justice in her new video on Phantasy Star
Going first person in those dungeons was basically witchcraft.
