I'm on the reservation list for there EGRET Ⅱ MINI. Don't know if I'll get it but I think it looks really good. But might buy it and it'll end up collecting dust.

Sinden update: By far the trickiest part of the setup is with the emulators. I simply can't get PCSX2 working with it, but on the other hand Duckstation was a piece of piss. MAME was OK once I got my head around it but it took a while to get there - it was just MAME being MAME tbh. I can help out anyone with any questions about what I did here.
The actual included software configuration tool looks ugly but actually takes up way less of your time than you might expect. The default settings for everything worked for me. The main thing was that it educated me to sit/stand further away from my 55" TV, which was a pretty fair point. If you get weird jitter, random off-screen misses or a perception of lag, try moving further away.
Once it's all up and running though unless you're some sort of professional light gun gamer you're not going to notice any difference between it and a classic CRT setup. It's probably better than the old PS1 guns in some ways, like off-angle stuff and jitter are noticeably improved. My accuracy ratings in-game are exactly the same.
I'm going to build one of the OG console adapters (as soon as I can get my hands on a Pi 4 anyway) and once that's done, I'm probably going to retire my last CRT forever. That's the highest praise I can bestow on both the Retrotink 5x and Sinden guns.

Built a Sinden to PlayStation adapter and it works beautifully. Felt fucking weird to be playing a real lightgun game on a modern display

The 32x wouldn’t even have been able to render the 2D screenshot without some compromise

Nothing at the time could've managed that, and probably not the next gen either. Those look like those old Silicon Graphics CGI renders you'd see at the time.

Those renders, I still haven't seen anything as good as some of those renders.
Remember the renders they kept putting out for Heart of Darkness years before the game finally came out? Sweet baby jesus! That game looked incredible.

The Alien model reminds me a bit of the one from AVP2, so yeah, that would have been way too much to ask from 1994. And the enviroment and lighting looks better in those shots still. I wasn't into the magazine scene back then (I only started buying magazines circa 1998, only PC ones, and I can't really remember anything too egregious) but I wonder. Did readers actually believe the final games would look like the renders?

Depends. You'll end up downloading entire back catalogues of games, and moving between each one every 10 minutes before getting frustrated.

I know there's limited interest on here but for anyone else on a lightgun kick you can make your own Time Crisis PlayStation footpedal with a cheapo footpedal like this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203067955660?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649...and wiring it up to the board from the cheapest PS1 controller you can find. I went to my local game shop and found a junk controller for £3 and it works perfectly. There were some convenient solder points for the shoulder buttons that I used (Time Crisis handily allows you to use ANY button on the player 2 pad for the cover button)

Not retro perhaps, but was very pleased to see this tweet this morning. Had a real soft spot for Madness Returns:

I never played Alice, despite really wanting to when it came out.
Is it worth a look today, as it’s on GP?

PC version should be fine, but you don't get the free remaster of American McGee's Alice. That one is only on Xbox 360. FOr what it's worth, though, I'm not a big fan of the original.
And yes, the sequel is very much worth playing. Decent combat and good audio, and especially astounding visual design imo. It starts off a bit generic, but it's a continuous crescendo, until the last couple areas are nightmares the likes of which I hadn't seen since that tenement level in Shadow Man.

This is as good a place as any to ask this. Something I've always wondered in regards to playing a PS2 on a modern TV. Assuming I'm not buying an additional hardware such as an OSSC of whatever, what are the optimal PS2 settings when connected through component cables? I guess SCART would be the PAL equivalent. I've never been quite sure whether it was better to choose Full or 16:9 when playing on an HDTV (now 4KTV).
Also I have a soundbar connected through the eArc port. Do I choose Digital Optical out in the sound selection is that only if you're using the actual optical cord? Would I benefit from the Dolby Pro Logic of whatever the PS2 supported if I select that with a soundbar? Do I need to get an optical cable and connect the PS2 directly to it?
Any help is appreciated.

The cable port is the same as a ps3 so I use component cables I had with that or the £15 hdmi conerter that plugs into the same port.
With the boot software OPL each game has options and can be tried in all sorts of resolutions upto 1080p, few work great and its a bit of fine tuning.
Never used ARC.

You can either wire optical directly into your receiver or use Pro Logic through the audio cables. I stick with Pro Logic or plain stereo tbh, hardly anything used surround sound in-game anyway. I wouldn’t really worry myself there.
The HD Retrovision cables are considered the best way to go but you can use any PS2/PS3 component cables.

And yeah use 16:9.
You can get away without a scalar assuming your TV actually has component inputs since the PS2 was a 480i console which is a legit resolution by modern standards.

Yeah, that's actually the biggest hurdle I have to upgrading my TV. It was the last year Sony supported proper component cables on their sets. I think the following year they did component through a converter cable, then the next they dropped it altogether.

I caved in to the hype, and started playing that E. Ring game by From Software. Dropped it after a couple hours. It's so boring. Combat is just walking back and forth attacking very slow enemies. The areas all look the same, and the dialogue and voice acting is terrible. Oh, and even the graphics are bad.

This is the "Game of the Year" people have been hyping? It looks like a PS2 game!
I think I read a little while ago that From's returning to the Armored Core franchise, which I'm pretty excited about.
