Mine looks surprisingly like zagibu's. Not only because I've hacked his computer.

Mine is blank. Just solid dark blue background and no icons.

I like to have my permanent shortcuts in the task bar, and those that come and go (i.e. games) on the desktop, which keeps it relatively tidy overall. I'd post a screenshot, but I saw someone speak disapprovingly of watersports in another thread, so perhaps not.

I don’t actually use the Macintosh HD icon, it’s just there for sentimentality. Everything I need is in the dock, finder is still column view for me. I rarely use spotlight. The desktop is my holding pen, anything downloaded or exported goes there for me to organise away This is eerily similar to how I use a Mac. Anyone who doesn't use column view is a masochist. The main thing that I wish I had on MacOS was the directory path in the Finder window, so I can just copy-paste it wherever I like. So annoying having to navigate multiple folders when you already have the path in another program. Similar here,: Dock in column on left hand side (right hand side = scroll bar, innit?), and a heady cocktail of Finder, Spotlight and Alfred for everything. Starting to make more use of Spaces/applications set to Full Screen these days too.

I'm a Dock right kind of guy.
Not heard of Alfred though. Intriguing... Why do I care about that?

You guys could save a lot of energy if you set a black wallpaper as your desktop background.

Never understood this. My desktop above is actually the cleaned up version, it looked way messier before I made the screenshot. My father forced me to always empty my desk when I was still living at his house. But what is an empty desk(top) good for? Same reason we have shelves and cupboards at home, and don't just pile shit up everywhere.

Mine's empty apart from a word doc containing a list of all the things I've eaten.

On an AMOLED screen, sure. Others, not so much. It was more of a joke, but if we were to pursue it in earnest, there is also local dimming on LCDs and there are micro LED screens as well.

Fair enough - hard to get in text sometimes. Regards the tidying stuff, read Marie Kondo or the Minimalists. It can be enlightening (although it's not for everyone).

I don’t want to sound like that guy but I’m bemused that desktop icons are even still a thing. They’re weird legacy things that shouldn’t really be needed anymore, like screen savers.

Honestly, the only ones I have are there because I always forget the uncheck the "add shortcut to desktop" box when installing. I never manually add a desktop shortcut. The pins on the taskbar at the bottom are the only ones I set by choice.
I do use "save to desktop" when quickly saving photos to upload to imgur, but then I delete them once they're up. It's easier than going through folders to find something.

How would I know that I still have an unfinished Grandia II save waiting for me without the desktop icon constantly staring at me?

Yeah, I never see my desktop, let alone use it as some sort of launcher. I did used to save files to it and sort them into their specific folders later, but I think I'm past that.

I don't want games on my Taskbar because that is too much filth. I don't want the number of clicks it requires to fire open Steam and launch the game because I'm impatient. Desktop shortcut is a happy medium.

I just press the super key (or Win or cmd, depending on what computer I’m at, though it’s cmd-space on macos which might explain a little why I’ve come to dislike it so much) and type a few letters of the name of the thing I want to launch.
