This doesn't bode well.
P&O ordered all ships to tie up ahead of a major announcement.
There's speculation they'll fire all staff and replace them with foriegn workers working through agents.

The glories of crucial transport being owned and operated by cunt companies from the other side of the world. Thank god stuff like that isn't privatised.

Maybe Chris Grayling is the new CEO?
Certainly doesn't look good tying up in port just like that.

Disgusting behaviour, not sure shitcanning 800 people like that when the jobs still exist is legal.

Edit: "...with P&O planning to use cheap agency staff to operate its ships." Mind-boggling... I have no clue what they think they are doing.

Disgusting behaviour, not sure shitcanning 800 people like that when the jobs still exist is legal. It’s not illegal. Govt. Website: If you do not consult employees in a redundancy situation, any redundancies you make will almost certainly be unfair and you could be taken to an employment tribunal. And after that you’ve got the fact that the job still exists which makes a good case.

Presumably they are relying on some/most of the permanent staff to immediately become 'cheap agency' staff? Either that or there is randomly enough casual labour to staff an entire flotilla in this country.

Probably going to hire some Ukrainians cheap.
Some of those they’re getting rid of will immediately take them up on a job, they probably don’t have that many alternative employment options.

From the reports, they had already hired replacement agency crews, who were waiting to board once the fired staff were removed from the ships. Absolute cunts.

I would've said another company for my shitlist, but it's not like I've even taken a ferry in the past couple of decades.
Shocking stuff. I hope they get reamed in the inevitable tribunal.

Absolutely shameless, it's like something out of Victorian times.
The government should take harsh, swift action against DP World, but of course they won't. Tories would love this kind of shit to be the norm - 'cutting red tape' or some bollocks. They'll do the bare minimum amount of hand-wringing to look like they care, then it's back to shovelling public money into their mates' useless companies.

I've not looked into it, but seems this has been made possible by legislation linked to Freeports. And is likely just the first step in removing employee rights.

Different company to P&O cruises apparently. I'm sure quite a lot of people aren't aware of that (I only found out yesterday), I bet it has some knock on damage to their company though.

I've only just seen this, it really is the real life version of the Simpsons scene where Kirk gets fired from the Cracker factory. Fucking disgusting but I get the strongest feeling they'll get away with it, there'll be talk of government pressure but nothing will materialize and in terms of PR it will be terrible for a while but customers will carry on as normal. However we'll see what will happen when you consider the new staff are being given a week's training and their employment terms and conditions are absolute dogshit.

They will have had lawyers going through it for months, nothing will happen. I get involved in redundancies from an insider threat perspective and by the time boots on the ground know about it, its been through every branch of governance in the company twice over. Management will have been preparing for this since christmas.

I get involved in redundancies from an insider threat perspective and by the time boots on the ground know about it, its been through every branch of governance in the company twice over. Management will have been preparing for this since christmas. I'm still struggling to see how this could be legal. To sack people with immediate effect and then immediately replace them with a cheaper alternative is just fundamentally incompatible with what I understand about employment law. IANAL but I do employ people, and have needed to brush up on it intermittently when dealing with some tricky people in the past. If I knew you could do this I would have done it ten times over by now. (Jokes, I wouldn't. Please don't hate me).
Redundancy requires a process of consultation and they can't claim redundancy in any case as they just drafted in a whole load of replacements. Changes in pay or condition need consultation.
The only way I can see that this is legal is if the staff they got rid of were all contractors, and not employed staff.

Yeah, does seem like it's the consultation where they done fucked up. The tribunals should have a field day. My guess is that they're banking on offering a bit more to go quietly. They may have misjudged that though, not least as there will be loads of lawyers who will take them on pro bono.
Nothing will happen from Govt side though, apart from hand wringing.

I think this is a deliberate gamble. They dont *have* to give a consultation period but the fact that they havent opens them up to 800 unfair dismissal tribunals which they are betting most people wont be arsed with.
