Yeah it's a little confusing why it's so much harder with the stick in the beginning. But I suspect that's a gatekeeping device, forcing you to understand combat basics before it "really" starts.

I think I died getting the sword twice, but each time it allowed me to get a bit further - the first time cut down some bushes so I could reach the chest, the second time just after opening it before I could add it to hand. But because you then have it on respawn I just went back and murdered everyone.

Loving it so far, think the maps and coded text are great, it's not that deep, really.

I'm finding myself stopping and just pouring over the screen looking for the slightest hint of a secret passage or hidden chest.
Nice when you can get to some of those deployable bridges and create some much appreciated shortcuts too. Usually just after some tricky part that has taken quite some repeats to push through.
I'm liking the way the game introduces new features and reading over the pages looking for clues in the notes.

Still struggling to understand some of the combinations of modifier cards and their effects. Now in possession of a sword, stick, shield, lantern, magic dagger, magic orb (grapple), shooty staff and a gun Feeling quite powerful but I'm sure there is more out there that is ready to hand me my arse. Think the combos of different enemy types is where it gets tricky. Managing to quell Snipers, Grenade lobbers and Swords dudes at the same time can be frustrating. Trying to break them off one by one is not always possible.

Think I'm done for now. Current boss battle involves too much shithousery for my liking. Pity, quite enjoyed what I'd played.

Yeah, had to apply the invincibility for the bosses because the jump in difficulty for them is insane.
Lovely game though. Love the music.

Thought I’d pop this on via streaming for a few mins to see what it was like: it’s great! Like Fez mixed with Zelda mixed with Dark Souls.

This looks and runs great on M1 macbooks for anyone that happens to own one. Just 90 minutes in it feels like they’ve made a game just for me.

Played a couple of hours of this and thought it was great. I love the way it teaches you to play and where you are supposed to go. Such a clever little system that is a big nostalgia-fest.
Looks great and feels pretty good too. Simple artstyle, but very effective. Same goes for the controls, that aren't anything novel, but just executed really well.
I know a couple of people have moaned about it being a bit cryptic, but I personally love that. It encourages you to experiment more and gives a nice sense of discovery.

Started playing this via Xbox cloud a few nights ago and having a ball with it. The way the world opens up is magical as is the instruction manual. Figured out how to level up just before getting the page that shows it Beat the Garden Knight first try last night, which I was not expecting.

I’ve done a few hours on this. Just got to what I’ve been calling the second area: hopefully not too spoilery to say “Eastern Forest”? I may even have it wrong.
I’ve got three or four pages of manual.
It hasn’t quite clicked yet. I’ve been wandering around, twatting stuff with my stick, and have died a fair few times.
Still waiting for the moment when I start to “get” it, but playtime is limited just at the moment.

I appreciate "git gud" etc. but I'm too old for that shit now, I only get a few hours playtime a week! At least let me save wherever and whenever I want. I was hoping this would be like a cross between Zelda + A Short Hike, proper chill adventure with puzzles. Alas, I fear it is not for me.

I feel if you have played a few hours and are still using a stick than you have probably missed something. You should be able to get the sword fairly quickly, which will open up quite a bit more of the map. If you are lost, the manual pages should give you a good idea where to go.

jimnastics I'm not ready to give up yet, but I hear you. It was EG camaraderie that got me through Dark Souls, and I was wondering if the same thing would happen with this one. You're all trying your best! Vandelay I really think I have missed a few things. My gaming time is a little limited at the moment, and there's often stuff going on which means it's less easy to concentrate. I'll wrap this in spoilers, for anyone new. It's my memory of where I'm up to so far. Haven't really played for a few days, so may not have it all correct: I woke up on a rocky platform, and started to walk in the obvious direction. Excited, I did my best to explore as much as I could - trying to walk through or past obstacles, and pressing "A" on everything I could see.
At some point I got to a golden door, and received a vision which, in my head, might have been related to a mother figure or my older self, something like that. That door is now locked forever.
I picked up a stick which let me hit enemies that I found I could lock onto. I spotted various signs, some legible, some not. I found a Hero's Grave which led me to a slightly separate area of the map.
In the other direction, I found a sign that said "To Town" but could never get through the large cube-shaped bushes to get there. I found a telescope which seemed to show me a bit more of that area.
I found another path, which got me into Eastern Forest, where I've seen a sign for another Hero's Grave, but keep getting battered before I get there. Dying results in me walking through space to a similar sort of mother figure or whatever it is. I can then go back and pick up my lost cubes and carry on.
I've found about four pages of manual, which just seem to describe things like locking on and rolling. Haven't really got much more out of the info than that.
I've missed something really obvious, haven't I?

EMarkM yeah you've basically missed the sword which is in the Hero's Grave area in the Eastern Forest, you've missed a path which is a bit hard to spot... basically keep heading east and explore everywhere. The sword will let you cut down those bushes to open up new paths for you.

jimnastics Brilliant, thanks for this - just enough and not too much! So, I don't really feel I've "missed" too much after all - I've not really spent much time in that area, so just need to have a better poke around. I figured getting something like that would enable me to get through those bushes. Cheers - I'll try to pop on later and give it a bash.

You can't actually "miss" it. Not having the sword will gate you from venturing out into the rest of the game so as long as you keep poking around you will find it.

I just beat this today, found it super enjoyable, felt like I was properly exploring without any quest markers etc., and probably just slightly more difficult than I would've liked it. (Took me about 7.5 hours according to end screen stats, for reference). I really liked the way you discover the guidebook through finding random pages, although the vagueness wasn't always welcome - I ended up caving and googling what certain items did, and also one late game change which wasn't clear how to proceed restoring all your old stats, 1 of which needed you to kill a specific enemy which doesn't spawn until you walk far enough into the correct room I also assume I've missed some secret stuff though as I never got to open the door in the mountain, I think because I never found the Holy Cross I saw some NPCs mention (I thought I'd get it from The Heir, but that just ended the game).

I didn't get the shield til quite late in the game, pretty sure I did the under well section without it, and by the time I did get it I'd gotten used to playing without so did the rest of the game barely using it. Lightly spoiler clue for how to get to it: unlocking a door might help Big spoiler for how to get it: through the old house, the big green shield guy in the area below (to the right) drops the key for it

Well, I just gave myself a bit of a lunch break and had a little blast on it between articles.
Found loads of new stuff (and paths!) in the East Forest, and, every time I spotted a new chest, I thought, “this must be the you-know-what” but I still haven’t seen it!
It just shows, though, that I hadn’t pushed the exploration boundaries quite as far as I had imagined. It can’t be far away - particularly as there were some giant ones sticking out of the ground near to where I was at one point!

This might be obvious to everyone, but in case it's not, pay attention to your head. If Tunic is looking at something, it's because there's something to look at.

I never got to open the door in the mountain, I think because I never found the Holy Cross I saw some NPCs mention (I thought I'd get it from The Heir, but that just ended the game). That is part of the big final quest. I really suggest going back (the game will keep your pre-final boss save as well as the NG+ save, so you don't need to play it all over again) and trying to solve it. When you work it out, it's very satisfying. It also gives you a different ending. There is also an extra quest about finding all the fairies , it doesn't give you much other than an achievement, but again it's pretty good stuff.
