You know what though, there is some positivity today. I think we can look upon the fact that Chris found comfort and support in coming here as a positive thing. When RPS and EG shut their forums, it did raise the question about the validity of such things in today's society. Perhaps the younger generation are too far removed and I'm wrong, but there is very much a value in online communities such as these. Chris was able to visit, vent about his treatment / progression, knowing that this was a safe place where could do so, as well as engage in other topics. I think a lot of us feel we can do that, on whatever topic we need to. If we feel shit, we can post about it, and there's someone else here you can empathise / sympathise or just listen. We can talk shit, we can bicker and argue about the small stuff. But it's all communication, and its all belonging. We don't know each other's real names most of the time, and the irony is that it's generally when something bad happens that we find out, but that doesn't diminish the relationships we build on here, and the friendships that are forged. They still count.
Look after yourselves everyone.

Yeah, I was thinking a similar thing. As dismissive as EGs/Oli's 'dont let the door hit you on the way out' attitude was towards the forum, there is value in it. Not for them, obviously, and certianly not in monetary terms but there is still milage in people just hanging out while shirking work.

Well said wunty. These sorts of communities are hugely undervalued.

Yeah, I just can't get on board with the Discord way of community building. It obviously works for a lot of people, but I personally like the permanence of a forum especially this place which has been am excellent venue to enable me to discuss difficult things that I honestly don't discuss with a lot of people in my real life.

The only problem is its becoming harder and harder to pass you comedians off as 'I was chatting to a guy at work'

Hey if the members of Mumsnet are allowed to have a community why can't we? I'm sure we'll get our own Glinner in here eventually.

Yup, we discussed this a lot when EG gave us the boot but EG (and an Arsenal message board) was social media for me before Facey was even a thing. Gave me huge amounts of support when I was working from home 3 days a week, not seeing anyone etc. Genuinely would have gone spare without it.

When the lockdown was in full swing in March 2020 I had no one around me, was incredibly isolated and was being gaslit by an incredibly toxic now ex-friend and no exaggeration you guys really got me through the day.

Just to add a bit more context to my brother's wedding post, he's been through some incredibly tough years health wise due to his chosen career (construction) taking it's toll on his body. Knee problems, back problems, etc. As a get out he's worked hard to establish his own business installing garage doors which is slowly starting to take off.
Cat, his wife, suffers from MS and will require more care as time goes on, and will most likely end up in a wheelchair.
There were quite a few teary eyes yesterday from both families. It was lovely.

There was a local Xmas TV ad a couple of years back, where Santa Claus was sorting out and announcing gifts for a family and it was all tech gizmos for the boys and the father of the family, but when it came to the mother he picked out a staffed animal, a little deer, announcing (in Greek) "a little deer, for mommy"... To this day, me and my boy use this catchphrase to pick on my wife/his mom, when it comes to tech staff...

Known some of you lot for twenty years. Hope that most of us continue the journey together from our twenties (ish) to our ends
Back in the F5 days more time and effort was she told conversing on the forum than in the real world, including at the pub. I’ve had my opinions and even character altered by those conversations. I’m legitimately a better person because of the forum.
The generosity showed to me a few years back certainly helped make sure I’m still around to wax lyrical about myself.
