Is there a thread/discussion going on for this? Could not find one. It's running now and finishes Monday 28th February. Lots of game demos available till then. I've not seen this in the past so a bit new to me, if anyone is and can recommend anything that could be useful.
(posted this in the comments on Eurogamer, copy pasta to here...)
I tried Hero's Hour last night. Looks like it may have been an itch.io game but is now coming to Steam. Coming out 1st March on there so not long to wait if you enjoy it.
Fairly enjoyable Heroes of Might and Magic type of game, civilization/world explorer with rpg elements. Build your town, heroes and armies, traipse the land powering up as you go and increasing your abilities and stocks. Not much tactics in the battles but you can influence them as they auto play. Lots of magic and different abilities/strengths in the different races. You can change the world size and the number of enemies to face so it has mileage if you end up enjoying it.

I tried Gibbon:Beyond the Trees. I think the movement could be pretty fun once you have it down.

Tried the demo of IXION, the citybuilder where you build your city on the inner rings of this: And one of the ring/building segments: And there's a strategic map where you move between systems, can do salvage missions etc: Demo was very polished, looks fairly simple but decent. There seems to be a narrative aspect where you jump, things go wrong, you have to rebuild etc. There were a lot of nasty corporate types giving you orders in the demo. Out in 2022 some time. It seems to be wishlisted already by a good few of my steam friends, so maybe it's quite well known and I just haven't heard of it.

I am still waiting patiently for The Drifter which was demoed in the first of these Steam Festivals. Still quite a way off though it seems.

I give you..... Autopsy Simulator . When will this simulator madness end? To be fair, it seems like you'll be solving cases based on the autopsies you perform - there's a whole evidence board, police files etc - and there was a whole morgue to wander round in, so it may be more than just ickiness. I had to stop playing though because it was burning up my GPU. And some humour involved:

Half way through the summer one. Anyone seen a round up of interesting demos apart from John's at Buried Treasure?

Next Fest '24 is coming people. Didn't see the point in making a new thread for each one. Can a mod change the title of this thread to just be Steam Next Fest instead?
Steam Next Fest start time February 5
10am PST 1pm EST 6pm GMT 7pm CET

I have mostly only heard good things about that one, so maybe I'm going to give it a try as well.
Edit: Urgh, I forgot that how something looks like in screenshots doesn't say anything about requirements anymore. I guess I could still try anyway...

As I mentioned over in the strategy games thread, Stormgate is in open beta for the Steam Next Fest week. It's the new RTS from ex-Blizzard devs and plays much as you would expect a game from the makers of StarCraft to play.
The core tech seems pretty good and the game play is enjoyable. If you like that style of RTS then it is certainly worth checking out. The main issue I would say at the moment is it all looks a bit bland. The human side, the Vanguard, could easily be mistaken for Terrans and the map looks more like it would fit in with Warcraft than it would a sci-fi game. The UI is very functional and I like what they have done with it mechanically, but it has no spark or identity to it. I really hope that this is all placeholder and we will see some refreshed artwork at some point, although I suspect things like units, buildings and the maps are only going to iterated on rather than get the overhaul they need.
Also in strategy news, Homeworld 3 has a demo this week as well. I have it downloading, so not had a chance to play yet.

I tried a bunch of stuff from next Fest demos, all on the deck though not main pc. Installed Pacific Drive and it doesn't run. Requires a c++ library so just exits. I found a fix that will enable it or I may just boot it up on the big PC. I'm keenly interested in this one after seeing some videos of it. steamdeckhq.com/tips-and-guides/pacific-drives-demo-steam-deck/Oddsparks. Its a 3rd person 3d from a rotatable aerial viewpoint where you need craft stuff, manually at first before you can access 'sparks' that and lemming like creatures that will fight and harvest for you, to complete quests. The aforementioned sparks can be used as payment in quest turn-ins but also dropped into machinery to automate output. Quite liked this, relaxed play and it runs acceptably on the deck apart from the many text panels being too small. Ultros Very metroidvania but super colourful and maybe a little OTT in the backdrop art. From the off you're already running past areas that are inaccessible due to height or needing to breakground. Seems you have to kill enemies with precision to get better quality 'food items' from them which form you heals and upgrades. As with many other of this genre, I hate the constant loading between small areas which makes the required backtracking a ballache. YMMV but the demo was enough for me. Nimrods Another Vampire Survivors/Halls of Torment style but this is all about upgrading your gun to be bigger and betterer. It's a bit dull and very repetitive to play. I'll give it a few more goes but it hasn't grabbed me immediately like VS/HoT did. Maybe the drones on the follow up runs will change it up enough. I do like that the level ups call in a dropped that slams into the ground so you can kite enemies into a large 'thwomp'. EDIT, this is slowly grabbing me. My custom gun that I've built can be sold off when I die or given to my drone to use on the next run. It's getting its claws into me. I also feel like it needs a dodge-roll in there.

Anybody tried this Dungeonborne yet. I watched the stream for a bit yesterday and it looks very interesting.
Dungeon crawler, PvPvE where the deeper you go the better the loot but the harder the enemies. You have to make it out with your loot to claim it so Skyrim/Tarkov?
Looked alright and worth a shufty at the demo.

played a little bit of pacific drive, loaded fine & no crashes (I'm guessing I just happen to have whatever dll library it wants) and good news is that the minimum specs seem to err heavily on the side of caution, in that i'm getting 40-50fps on high/ultra with a cpu four generations behind minimum & a gpu only fractionally better than minimum. controller handling feels a little off, keyboard and mouse works better in car than you'd think
downloaded but not yet played star trucker (euro truck sim but IN SPACE sign me up) & lightyear frontier (every activity is better with stompy mechs, including cozy farming sims)

Played through Pacific Drive tonight - quite a nice slice of game to work through the basics. I'm pretty keen to give the full release a go now. Feels a bit clunky in places but think that was down to me as much as the game. Small tip: don't forget to kill the engine when you get out. It will continue to run and use fuel! Oh, and the end of the demo mentions save game won't carry over to release version, so maybe don't spend too long on it so you won't need to play the first few hours again!

played News Tower through most of last night's insomnia. i like, quite chill though looks to have the bones to get more indepth, nice theme, decent management bits
downloaded but not yet played Reus 2, for more chill, this time in sideways Black & White garb. and #Drive Rally which looks a bit Art of Rally but has a 2CV on its steam page which instantly makes it the better

reus 2 didn't really click but that's deffo a me problem, it's more reus and that's probably a good thing
#drive rally didn't really click and that's a #drive rally problem - handling is slightly off but biggest problem is Arnie co-driver who calls some corners in advance but not others, says "schnell, schnell" when it'd be more helpful to say "left hairpin" - there's no minimap so your knowledge of upcoming corners is entirely dependent on this twat. fixable problems, both. cataclismo looks like it could be quite nice, kinda Beseige with a story. opening was far too "click this single unit across the map while we explain how to move the camera" and I junked it as I have the attention span of a toddler after too much sunny delight
downloaded but not yet played GT Manager 24 as it looks quite like Motorsport Manager and that was a good time.
