Have a real soft spot for this game. From it's initial bare bones launch, it's developed and grown into something quite special, if somewhat intimating experience to newcomers. That said, 4 years on from launch there's apparently more playing it now than there ever has been.
For me, I often don't have the time the game requires. But it's such an impressive solid world, I enjoy getting lost in it. Also Rare seemingly still have a genuine love and passion even now for developing the game, with a recently announced 2022 roadmap and launching the first of a series of monthly time limited story elements/quests that alter the world permanently, while continually added other features and elements to the game.
The recent said time limited story addition while short, offers more of a glimpse into the lore and brings other players and ships together with a common purpose.. creating dubious alliances before there's a accidental murder or betrayal and all hell brakes loose.
Not entirely sure whether Microsoft's influence on gaming will be positive longer term. But the fact they've allowed Rare years to develop a Wind Waker inspired multiplayer open-world pirate game and just run with it, even years after launch... I can't help but appreciate.
