I think there could be something in that. The last TNG film had flopped, Voyager was on the wane, Enterprise was getting a lukewarm reception and the only other real interplanetary sci-fi contemporary was Stargate. With all that going on and the Matrix doing its thing I guess maybe a traditional spacey sci-fi show didn’t really have a place in the schedules. It was the dawn of the Sopranos and West Wing prestige tv era too if I’ve got my timelines right. Plus probably something about 9/11.
It was still a couple of years before Galactica “saved” the genre and had a load of “has sci-fi finally grown-up” thinkpieces written about it.

Goliath S4 6/10
Probably the weakest of the seasons, although Billy Bob was fantastic as ever. JK Simmons was good too.
The courtroom scenes went past being TV credible and the whole thing felt like an excuse to have him rant about evil pharma.

Bizarrely, you could include '24' in that too regarding 9/11. I think it debuted a year before but it definitely gained momentum after 9/11. TBH, I'm loving the resurgence of 'hard sci-fi' at the moment. I think The Expanse paved the way to a certain extent, but the success of Interstellar, The Martian, Arrival and Gravity have certainly helped with the appetite. Waiting until Foundation has completed the season before binging it, but really looking forward to it. Still need to watch Dune as well.

Cobra Kai S3. 5/10. Most of the season was silly nostalgic fun, but holy Christ the last few episodes are bad. Proper shark jumping imo, so far out of the realms of possibility. I think I am done with it now.

Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries
More mid-00s hard sci-fi after Enterprise and Firefly and its the darkest and most grounded yet.
Elon Musk has betrayed humanity to the machines and now we face extinction after they Pearl Habour our colonies. The character stuff and politics are as good as anything you’ll see now and the military side is up there almost in Band of Brothers territory too.
10/10

The Shield (S5) It was very, very good until the last 20 minutes of the last episode and then it just took it up a notch. This is coming very close to surpassing Breaking Bad. 10/10 One of my favourite endings to a show ever - it's just perfect.

I think I am done with it now. Yeah the actual nostalgia shit was pretty good, particularly having rewatched 2 and 3 recently. But the stuff with the kids is now complete garbagio.

The X Files - S5. A solid 8/10 from me. Enjoyed the most out of all the ones I've seen so far and the first 10 episodes were fantastic.
Mulder seem to be a bit of a dick for a few episodes but I enjoyed it

Chestnut Man (netflix) - Not as good as The Bridge, and inferior woolly jumpers to The Killing, but solid scandi-noir that's one of the better whodunnits of late. Leans a little too heavily into "brilliant detective held back by incompetent police management & criminal justice system" trope. Wraps up its story in 6 episodes which is a brevity I appreciate given Netflix' tendency to pad everything out to 17 hours.

That's not a thing! Especially the miniseries, which wasn't half as good as season 1.

Agreed, unbelievable Jeff. Had to physically restrain myself reading his review of Firefly, outrageous

Cobra Kai really shits the bed in the last season. Couldn't even bring myself to finish it.
Shame, as it was really enjoyable fluff up until then.

I did like it but there wasn’t enough episodes for it to properly break free from being Whedon archetypes on an away mission. More episodes and character development would totally have boosted the score. Galactica just landed fully formed and delivered exactly what was intended from the beginning.

I just finished Succession S1 and thought it was excellent, funny, sad and touching with some fantastic performances.

Cobra Cyberwar
Not quite as good as the first series, but still a half decent techno thriller, that suffers from too much angst.
6/10

You s3
It's so trashy and some of it so stupid, but it's really easy and enjoyable to watch. Everyone gives it there all and there's some really good lines throughout. Love steals the show.
The shittest 8/10 ever.

Actually one niggle about Galactica; the cgi Cylon’s really betray that this was a Sci-Fi Channel production.

Star Wars Visions on Disney+
Essentially The Animatrix, Star Wars Edition
It was good seeing the different studios all do their takes on what a Star Wars story set or made in Japan would look like. They don't all hit. Episodes 2 and 3 were the lowpoints, IMO, and almost had me drop the series after the stellar Kurosawa homage of the first episode. One of the episodes felt very Ghibli-does-Star-Wars, another was an Astro Boy homage. I watched it with the Japanese voiceovers, but I wish it had a proper subtitle option in the settings. The subs available are closed captions of the English script, so you can see where the localisation doesn't match the spoken words, and there's a time or two when the voice over is even out of synch.
8/10 overall, points just deducted for eps 2 & 3.

Dexter: Season 5... all finished and I'm still enjoying! also 3 episodes into season 6 and guess what...still enjoying. I think as much as I liked the Trinity season, my fav my well be the Jimmy Smits season So then Dexter season 6 is done...well I have to say my least favourite by a good bit. The only real saving grace was the end shot of the whole season...On to season 7. Well actually about 5 episodes in, as I forgot to post about season 6.

Top Boy series 1,2 and season 3. I have seen a few times. Totally top level 10/10. Should be getting "season2" on NF next year. Highly recommended.

Roaming in the Wild series 2 (BBC Scotland / iPlayer)
An outdoor show where two pals spend a couple of days on a walk or paddling a river or loch. Its very simple, just some mates in the countryside, beautifully shot landscapes and a lush soundtrack. As with the first series its a lovely piece of work and helps make up with having not been able to go anywhere wild in a couple of years.
10/10
