Heh, each their own Dougs Just began to see the plotlines coming a mile off, and it was all a bit twee, for me anyway Spoiler, the Indian guy will manage another team who will meet Ted on the final day of the season with the Premier league title at stake and he will lose, but in doing so will realise the valuable life lesson that the spitting thing is maybe not the right way to go, ends in a good old sing song. Enjoy! Sounds about right, with Ted doing is quips along the way. I'll still watch it though!

Not at all, I am a big RomCom guy when they are done right, but there is a tipping point for me, glad you enjoy it Dougs.
We all need something that lifts us out of our moribund lives occasionally.

Squid Games
The 2nd half of the ending didn't quite work for me but overall I really loved it. Its tense, brutal and well acted and I hope they don't fuck up a 2nd season as I'm not sure it's needed.
9/10

I hate romcoms and cheesiness usually drives me mad but Ted Lasso is the best. So beautifully made and acted.

Fort Salem - season 2 - on the BBC in the UK.
Very occasionally I come across a show that isn't at all what I expected but which feel like it was made for me, and Fort Salem is that show.
It has an almost indescribably bizarre premise, that being that witches exist and can cast powerful spells (by singing a sort of tonal way, rather than with words) and in 1692, and basically became part of the US military and pivotal in the wars fought of the history of that country.
Now there is a threat from terrorist witches and we follow three witches in like witch military academy.
It initially seems like it will be some "Young Adult" deal but the plot moves very fast and the lore and magic get very strange, and it quickly becomes its own thing, which is just not like anything else on TV.
Season 2 doesn't disappoint in continuing to be completely bizarre and the one dumb decision they seemed to make with the plot is shown to be going somewhere at the end of the last episode.
For me, the show is like an 11/10 despite sometimes questionable acting, a clearly very small budget and so on. If you like things that are just really odd but not piss-takes, you may well like it too.

I watched S1 with the girl. Its so focus group, laser targeted at teenage girls its actually pretty funny.
That said, its by no means the worst YA thing ive seen.

Sex Education S3 - 7.5/10. It's getting a bit samey, they really need to wrap it up. I still love the style and am engaged in the characters, but it's starting to stray into soap territory. Looks amazing though, those shots of the Wye Valley are stunning. Worth watching just for those.

Ted Lasso S2 - 10/10 Thought this was absolutely wonderful, and even better than S1.

Though I did think season 2 lost its way a bit compared to season 1. It suffered a bit from having Scylla separated from the main cast for too long (though her team up to fuck up the Camarilla was fun). It also suffered from those guys being way too cartoonishly mustache-twirlingly evil. If it had ended at S2 I'd have been a bit miffed, but since it has a 3rd season coming I'm hoping they can pull a few things together satisfyingly in that. It did feel like they were working with a smaller budget in S2. Did you think Scylla's acting suddenly went a bit weird in this season at times? It almost felt like they were working around some problem like her not being able to film with the main cast or something. Maybe that's just me.

Guilt, Series 2
(Both series are on iPlayer)
Very much enjoyed this. Very darkly comic, treading that fine line between farce and thriller pretty much perfectly. Mark Bonnar is excellent as shady lawyer (disbarred after the events of series 1) Max who seems to teeter between masterful control of the situation with an underlying rage, and that sense that he might just be slightly out of his depth.
The dialogue is wonderful - although it does give you a feeling that no one really talks like this, it captures brilliantly how we all wish we would talk if under pressure.
I thought this hung together better overall than S1, although it’s been a while since I saw that so my memory might be fuzzy. Well worth watching.
And it’s only 4 episodes, which is perfect to do in a couple of evenings.
8.5/10

Only Murders In The Building (Disney+)
What an absolute delight. Charming, funny, intriguing, classy stuff. Such a warm watch. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez tackle a murder mystery in their apartment building via the medium of a true crime podcast with hilarious consequences. Everything is just perfectly pitched from the setting to the cameos and guest stars. I watched the whole thing in two sittings and can’t wait for a second season.
10/10

As an aside, in the MCU thread someone posted something about how one of reasons Marvel’s template has been able to dominate cinema so much is that a lot of talent who would have been making non-blockbuster mainstream movies have turned to streaming services and series instead leaving nothing else to watch but superheroes or arthouse. This feels like a perfect example of something that could have sat in that space.

Just finished season 1 of Vikings, after being told by many, many people it was "essential watching".
Meh. I doubt we'll be watching any of the subsequent seasons.

I didn't "get" Vikings either, the main actor is terrible with his "I'm edgy and a bit mad" look being used every 6 seconds.

We just finished Maid on Netflix, not all the writing is perfect but Margaret Qualley is brilliant.

2nd series of Mindhunter on NF, set it aside for a while after watching the 1st series, took a while to get back, excellent if a little underwhelming with regards a conclusive story.
Looks like we may not see the 3rd series, which it needs to complete the storyline, for a while, if at all. Fincher is onto other projects.
Well directed and very authentic looking, enjoyed it, well as much you can given its a series about serial killers

Saw an episode of Vikings whilst mum had it on. Looked dreadful. She often falls asleep watching things, so I think it's perfect for her because she can wake up and basically someone else is angry and fighting, and that's about as nuanced as it gets.

I loved Vikings myself, although the first season was a bit off. Norseman is also a fun take, although having the latest season as a prequel threw me.

S1 of Vikings isn't the best, but it really gets going once Ragnar is in charge.
I guess if you're one of those weird people who don't think he's the best thing about the show (aside from Floki), you probably shouldn't keep watching. But for the rest of us, it's an absolute pleasure to watch him act circles around everyone. Particularly after they get to England.

Floki was the best thing for me. Ragnar was just a bit sub-Jax Teller. A viking imagined by modern cool. You can keep him.

SonsofRagnarchy/10. it does improve for a while, like S2/3/4 (iirc are definitely better), but it's basically a Viking soap opera which causes you to look up a lot of interesting stuff on Wikipedia. It's rather inaccurate to the precise recorded history buts gets the "tone" of the period pretty well and reminds one of a lot of important but often forgotten historical characters. It's a bit like Spartacus in that. Spartacus is less precisely accurate than, say, Rome (which itself took a lot of liberties), but as a student of ancient history, especially Rome, I'd say Spartacus "gets" ancient Rome in a way Rome (the show) really did not. I will say Vikings makes an amazing companion to an 867 start in Crusader Kings 3, if you're anywhere in or near Europe.
