Oh man, that God damn second boss. I think I managed to figure out mostly how to counter him on my last fucking life. The bastard.

I’m becoming a bit frustrated with it.
I don’t understand how you can avoid taking hits. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, and it doesn’t seem timing dependant, it just doesn’t seem to work reliably. I’d love to see someone really skilled just parry a room to death, Batman-style, but it doesn’t seem possible. And because messing up the parry means you’re going to take 3 or 4 hits, you end up losing lives to it.
Also, no directional throws, it’s more of a barge backwards. Even the unlockable grapple just switches places with someone rather than damaging them. And no disarm. That’d be rally useful when the botanist pulls out the machete and starts cutting you up. It feels a bit limited in a lot of ways that a Kung-fu master sort of shouldn’t be.
It does have that “just one more go” factor though.

One thing you ended up seeing with Tsushima was Japanese developers coming out and saying that it’s the kind of game that couldn’t have been made within Japan. Not just in terms of open world and character design, which were explicitly mentioned, but I suspect that politically it probably would have been seen as more problematic to see the Japanese samurai fend off the foreign invaders - I remember seeing some articles written by a Korean American in the end but I suspect criticism would been louder if it had been created by a Japanese studio, especially within Asia. Are we talking about criticism of the portrayal of the Mongol Empire? No, more of the supremacy of the Japanese swordsmen. Well, at least the one you end up controlling.

I got his second form down to the last bit then and he started doing a different attack and took my last few lives.
I just don't understand the dodging or parrying at all. Camera really got on my tits there as well working against me.

No idea how I got through the first level without losing a life last night. Tried it again this morning and I'm getting my arse kicked. Every rougelike I've ever tried I've had a really good first run, and then every subsequent run has felt like failure in comparison. It's probably luck, but it's one of the main reasons I hate roguelikes. That said, this sounds pretty ace, and apparently you can restart later levels at the lowest age you started them, so it's more about improving your runs than restarting from scratch each time. Bit worried that losing the attacks you've bought is going to fuck up muscle memory though.

I mean, I’m going to say it but I think the graphics on this are 10/10.
Resolution? Well, it looks flawless.
But, this is more down to art design rather than textures, although close up nothing looks blurry or low res as such.
It’s almost like Zelda BotW levels in art design. It’s beautiful.
Maybe that’s just a personal taste thing.

Made in to The Club aged 42 Not good enough!
Starting to buy more abilities and have unlocked a couple permanently. Not sure if there were better options than the kicking of environmental stuff, but it looks pretty good!

Ok, so I’ve just watched 2 clean runs of the first level, including the boss. The players were just relentless, pummelling everyone, almost never dodging, blocking and parrying almost every attack, including the power attacks. They murdered everyone, rarely getting mini-bosses, and just beat through every enemies’ guard. Including the boss; literally just a flurry of punches until he died, barely taking hits. Both players on PS4.
It’s like a completely different game. How do you block power attacks? How do you beat enemies through their guard? I do not understand the block/parry timing at all, it just doesn’t work.

I think it looks serviceable, a bit cheap even. I’m not mad about it - small team, it’s an alright style and does the job. BotW it’s not though.
Would probably look 10/10 on the OLED Switch.

I'll be honest, I thought one of the themes of the game was the inability of Samurai to cope with anybody who didn't play by their rules. Also that they're kind of dicks to anybody 'lower' than them (Jin's uncle at any rate).

Anyone having trouble with defending, go into practice and set him to aggressive. Then hold L1 down and just practise flicking the analog up and down to evade his attacks. Do it for a few mins and it should feel natural.

Dodge is definitely more useful than parry, although against groups it's easy to get yourself in shit just using that.

Yeah, I did a far more aggressive run after posting and it’s way easier. Finished level 1 at age 31 though, so still need to work on getting that younger.

I can breeze through the 1st level now. 2nd level is such a step up though, I imagine it'll be where a lot of people give up.

Best run I had was finishing it at 23, and that was my first go.
I think it actually gets harder the more you play it. When I went back to that first level I finished it at 39. I was too preoccupied with trying to parry stuff and use some of the more complex moves. I still don't have a clue how best to play it.

I can absolutely walk through The Club. Right up until the last 2 rooms. I actually think those 2 cunts you run into just before the boss room are harder than the actual boss. I've figured it's better to take out the woman of the 2 first, because the man that's in there is one hell of a difficulty spike.

I hate that second mini boss, just can't get a read on him. Then to fight them both before the boss is an absolute cunt.

Yay, I beat Sean.
(Question on that: How do you reliably dodge roll when down on the floor? Is it R2 + direction? Circle? I'm pressing all the things!)
But now I'm of the ripe old age where I'll immediately die in the museum...

Rest of the game is actually meant to be easier than level 2 from what I've read. I've been super shit at this today, concentration just not there.

Yeah I keep going through bits when I'm amazing, then bits where I'm getting hit by everything. Can feel myself becoming obsessed with it though.

I hate that second mini boss, just can't get a read on him. Then to fight them both before the boss is an absolute cunt. The third strike with the glowing fist needs to be blocked late. Once you get the timing down on it it's a lot easier.

I don't get enough time with it during the week to improve so I'm just trying to get a few permanent unlocks sorted. Then at the weekend I can realise I'm not improving but I shall always have the corridor.

Breezed that corridor in around 30 secs but the next time lost a couple of lives. SEESH.
Definitely think that grinding level 1 to prep some unlocks will help.

The kicking shit up from the floor at people is amazing, can get you out of bother. I think it's one of the most important unlocks to make permanent.

Yeah, I have that unlocked too. Though I find the 'twatting them when they are down' moves a bit erratic. Maybe down to object placement around the characters.
