Considering this is meant to be a Paramount+ exclusive to draw people in, dumping it on Channel 5 (which they own and, therefore, probably aren't getting any money for licencing) suggests to me they've royally fucked up the launch of the streaming service. Putting Master Chief alongside Council Bins That Shame Britain and Top 100 Celebrity Upskirts doesn’t scream confidence in the product, does it?

For my sins I watched all of it.
There's about 3 decent episodes in the first season. The rest were shit.
Frustratingly it's not out and out bad. I had no real problem with the cast, acting or production values. Couldn't give a hoot about the differences from the games either, let's face it, they were badly written tosh anyway.
It was just, very, very dull for the most part with very little happening. The Kwan plot-line almost flatlines the show.

Did they blow the entire budget for episode 1, because episode 2 has turned into loads of standing around and talking bollocks

Didn't expect this to be top show on Paramount Plus.

And it sucks to be Star Trek, too.

Do they fuck in the new Star Trek? If not it explains why.

I enjoyed it. Bit weird that it is a completely different story, but I liked that the presentation was quite close to the games, down to the shield-break sound. Except for the hulked-out elites, what is that about.

I thought it was better than it had any right to be. I guess it helped that my expectations were low and that I have a longstanding crush on Natasha McElhone. I also don't care about authenticity to the games at all, as whilst I loved the original Halo and quite enjoyed 2 & 3 I didn't bother with the rest. In part that was because the plot was confusing nonsense.
The worst bits by far involved the Covenant. I just thought the CGI was unconvincing and they look and sound stupid. Pity they didn't change them to make them less gamey. The first episode and last episode containing extended battles against them were pants as a result.
I enjoyed the bits with more talking and plot. They did a decent job of providing more context and grounding for the hand wavey space science aspects. How they introduced and framed the Spartan programme and Cortana was good.
Didn't mind the Kwan Ha bits too much. Hey storyline wasn't great, but as a character and actress I thought she was alright.
Covenant bits aside, I thought the production values were superb. The main reason I tried it was for the Atmos presentation, and that didn't disappoint. Really nicely done. Quite like how Cortana sounded like she was in your head.
I'd certainly like another season and can see how it could develop into a decent sci fi. The Halo and forerunner stuff could be great if they deviate from the games further and have a bit of imagination. Equally if it spends more time on Covenant religious politics and CGI battles then it could decline into nonsense the same way the games did.

I watched a few episodes and I suspect the reason it deviated from the source material is that it was never actually a halo series in the first place.
Im convinced it started life as a generic space soldier show before they accidentally got the rights to the video and just crossed the old name out.

It's best when it's ignoring the video game.
I wonder if The Last of Us's success will drive further investment and effort into this now. They've raised the bar but also made a few people think actually, maybe adaptations can work (myself included).

One adaptation has worked. An adaptation of a game that is widely regarded to have the best storytelling in a game ever. All they've done is basically remake the game and added a few bits. I can't actually think of another game that would work for. Certainly not Halo. I played 4 of the things and haven't got a single clue what happened in any of them.

Mass Effect would translate pretty well into a TV show, ME1 is the first season, and ME2 and ME3 would each take up 2 seasons.

Yeah thats a fair one, I've always wanted a Mas Effect film/series. Amazon are making one I think.

Dead Space could make a great film. Aliens crossed with Event Horizon. Without being shit like EH was.

Dragon Age Origins would work, seeing as it's basically lord of the rings.
BioShock might, perhaps better as a movie than series though.
KOTOR? I guess a game based on a movie franchise is cheating.

Haven't seen it yet but I did enjoy the Reach episode. It's definitely been better than the first season but still a little shit.

I thought of a reply to the "what other game could work as a series" question then I realized that discussion was a year old...
(For the record, I was thinking FF16. I figured it'd basically be Game of Thrones style storytelling -before it jumped the shark-, with crazy fight sequences every so often)

Season 2 was much better than the first but it still wasn't much cop, I don't care that they've deviated from games and books I just don't think what they've created is actually any better. The return of one particular character is bizarre given a) how unpopular they were and b) they fucking died in the first season.

100% agree with Whizzo. It's better than season 1 but that's not saying much.
Will I still watch season 3, yes. :/

The show is terrible, filled with pointless scheming and melodrama.
Odd choice to turn the master chief into a whiney dickhead who does nothing except get gaslighted.
I will only watch it for 8 more seasons.

I never watched an episode of season one but just noticed episode one of season two is on YouTube. Just watched the opening 16mins before the title sequence starts. Much better than I was expecting! Might have to check out the series.

Ah so when it gets to the dialogue heavy parts it drops off a cliff.

Pretty much watched all of season two today. Pleasantly surprising that I enjoyed it. Admittedly i entirely skipped side character stories that weren’t the main Spartans, Halsey or the Oni chap. Next season needs more bang bang and less talky talk.

The problem is the show can afford about an hour's fully-suited action in a series. With that in mind I think they could cut the side characters and make a great 3 or 4 episode miniseries rather than a mediocre 8 episode one.

I quite like what they've done with Master Chief and he's far more interesting than the super competent yet generic space marine he could have been. They had to do something to make his character deeper than in the games.
I thought series 1 was mostly solid and series 2 is a small but meaningful improvement.
Halsey is good (underused in series 2) and Kwan too, and the set design, CG environments and lighting are mostly superb. I don't mind most of the human scenes in general, they provide some consequences to the shooty bits.
The covenant are my big problem with it. They look a bit better than series 1 but still absurd next to human actors. It's so cartoonish I struggle to take scenes seriously whenever they turn up. I guess the source material ties their hands a fair bit.
The flood were great though. More of them, more mysterious forerunner architecture, more rogue AIs and much less covenant. I'm quite looking forward to series 3.
