AFAIK all other spin-off stuff is supposed to be in continuity with the games, right?

I enjoyed that. They've nailed the look and the action. CGI is a little ropey in places but in general they have it spot on. Definitely prequel territory.

My fault, I should have did the search. No excuses on that front these days.
So here's my fast opinion.
The dialogue is painful and it looks cheap. The CGI is not up to the current standard with the Elites being big and bulky but at times moving with none of the weight. It's immersion-breaking. There's an extremely heavy Asian representation, and Mandarin being spoken so (along with other narrative touches) I get a feeling it was developed and produced in partnership with Chinese filmmakers for the mainstream Chinese market, which doesn't always mesh with the typical Western storytelling process and can seem a little naff from our perspective. However, the action sequences should be better, but these are flat, archaic and crass while somehow being confusingly shot in places.
And I've only just got to the opening credits.

Yeah, this is a hard sell. I don't think I can get into this.
Exposition is poorly written at best. The casting is fine, even good, but there might be 2 actors in the whole thing who have any actual conviction in the script. Which is balls when 90% of the episode is people sitting or standing and talking at each other.

Agree with Deebs.
CGI is not current and feels cheap and blurry/airbrushed. The weight of movement is wrong. Spartan’s are a few notches above well-made cosplay. The whole thing feels like a moderate budget fan-production. It’s shot overly exposed and contrasty, reminds me of the Riddick films.
I was expecting a lot more, production-wise.
Reach looks alright, and sets are suitably sci-if but it’s all very industrial and sparse. Despite the Chief and the Covenant and all the right sounds it doesn’t feel like Halo. It’s very gritty. AKs and real-world vehicles don’t help. It’s brutal though - people being blown in half from weapon fire, lot’s of blood splatter.
Pablo Schreiber is not the actor for Master Chief, and unmasking him is a mistake.
Unsure who it’s for, really.

Amateurish is the best way I can think to describe it.
Seems I was mistaken about the Chinese connection, tho perhaps not the market. It really is just kind of bad in the way that US/Chinese collaborative movies and so on tend to be.
However, I did enjoy the creative shooting to keep the camera from being reflected in Masterchef's visor.

Couldn't watch more than 15mins. I thought the CGI was properly shite and the gore felt really out of place.

I agree with stuz359, I enjoyed the action, felt spot on to me; loved how slower Master Chief moved carrying the machine gun. Yes, the CGI could be better but it's not the worst we've seen. Unfortunately, I also agree with Derblington, unmasking him Judge Dredd style -on the very first episode no less- was wrong, whatever his "excuse" was... |

If it weren't for the intro credits with a "Paramount Presents a Showtime Production" titles, I could've sworn I downloaded one of those fan films that gets overhyped on the internet rather than the official show. For a lot of it, I didn't know what was happening, despite having played the games. Must be a mess for completely new viewers. That said, I think it improved a bit when they got to the UNSC headquarters. Chief having the flashbacks and basically going rogue is right about the point where it got my interest. Prior to that, I wasn't sure if I'd watch anymore episodes, but now I'll check out at least two more episodes and hope it picks up. |

Enjoyed the first two episodes. Played halo but couldn’t give a hoot as to whether they’re faithful to the lore or not, seems like perfectly serviceable sci fi action to me. It’s not top tier CGI, but a little puzzled by the criticism of it, again looks fine to me

God knows what happened in that episode. Almost tempted to watch it to find out... Almost.

Considering this is meant to be a Paramount+ exclusive to draw people in, dumping it on Channel 5 (which they own and, therefore, probably aren't getting any money for licencing) suggests to me they've royally fucked up the launch of the streaming service.
